Simpler to glass carbon directly onto the polystyrene with an abundance of resin, dry second layer of glass on top soaks up the excess resin when rolled down for a fully wetted yet dry laminate. I regularly shape surfboards from polystyrene.

Hey Rob, genius idea and awesome work! You encouraged us to convert an old mistral energizer to a foil board... I will share pictures ASAP. we finished the connection for the (kite-)foil yesterday and tested it today. It started to foil pretty easy but then always rolled over to the lee side. On an extreme downwind course we could foil for a few seconds but then got too fast, turned upwind and crashed ... It feels like the board is too narrow to get enough pressure on the luv side, but I have to say that we are absolutely new to Foilsurfing so it could also be just our lack of skill :-) we read that the width of a foil board should be at least 70cm so our next step will be to make it wider... Problem is that the Board is 59 cm at the widest point 🤔... At the moment our ideas are to make it like outrigger like some boats (I.e moths) have... to leave the bottom like it is and laminate a wider foambord on the top/deck with a little v-shape... it will look definitely funny... do you have any experiences, ideas or recommendations for us? Cheerio from Bavaria
@robrockwindsurfboards755 жыл бұрын
Maybe at first glance and not a simple solution, but worth considering. Cut the board twice lengthwise. Saw something of 6 cm left and right of the mast track / tuttle box and then glue (2x) 10 cm thick EPS between them. The total width then becomes 79 cm. A little shaping / laminating / painting ..... done. Foiling should then become a lot easier. Have fun with your DIY project.

Hi again, and thanks for your idea. I haven't mentioned, that we don't have many tools and much space to work with :-) You'll see in the pictures and lough out loudly... so unfortunately we will not be able to cut two straight and parallel lines through the whole board. We'll widen the tail to the max. width as a first step and flat out the deck to get a more upright stance. If this won't help we'll follow your idea and make it even wider. And if that won't help we'll build a completely new board like you showed in the other tutorial :-)

Does it work - increase speed? If so, why aren't the speed record boards designed this way? Also I don't think you need the extra carbon over that addition as carbon is for stiffness and not strength and there is already enough stiffness in the original board let alone adding another. E glass would be a better option.

Carbon fiber is worse than asbestos for your lungs and skin since the fibers are so thin and strong. It's a very good idea to use protective clothing, filter, and googles when working with it.

It looks like the planing plank on this is about 25-30 mm deep. The shots of it underway show that even at full planing speed the upper board still has a lot of influence re: skin friction. So have you looked at making the needle board thicker? Can you get away with making it thicker than you have or would that render it unsailable?

What if You would have left the stern part of the "plank" straighter? probably more drag at lower speeds but when properly planning, less drag, acting like a planning hull?
@XSAILOR653 жыл бұрын
Actually looking at the video the water flow at the stern looks very much as from any planning hull already now:)

Hi, I'm thinking about how to repaint the down part of an old board. Many people told me to use car paint ( bi-component) because it's harder, I'd like to know if it's possible to brush paint the bottom of the board and than dine sand it till reach a mate and flat finish ( no sing of rollers or brush). Is there anybody out there that can help me ?

Skis and Snowboards changed from parallel edges to parabolic edges. Would this work for a windsurfing board (non-foil board).

Hey Rob, nice work. I saw this type of board just a few days ago, I think it was a fanatic prototype. But the rider wasn't satasfied. Well he used it with a foil. I think a foil on that type of board is nonsense. Because when the board is liftet there is no contact anymore. And before lifting, that shape doesn't plan as good as a regular flat shape. But how does it work for regular fins? What advantages this kind of shapes bring? Does it really just plane on the small bottom? Is the planing ability still exactable? Is it turntable while planning? I could imagine it goes straight like on rails. Thx alot
@robrockwindsurfboards755 жыл бұрын
What a questions ???? The video you mean is from Nico Pico. I received seven reports from surf friends that my idea was stolen. Ha Ha. The first reaction under his video is from me asking why the board is not good. (read it yourself) The deck has a huge concave and is difficult to control when jibbing! (And in my opinion this board should not have cut outs.) ? Plans this board later; NO. ? I think a foil on that type of board is nonsense. ; The advantage is that when foiling with a hard landing, the smack is absorbed more gradually. ?Does it work for regular fins. ;Yes, the fin can be smaller. I use no longer than 32 cm. ?What advantages this kind of shapes bring. ;You only need 1 board! Low wind foil - lots of wind fin. ?Does it really just plane on the small bottom? Is the planing ability still exactable? Is it turntable while planning? I could imagine it goes straight like on rails. : The board surfs just like any other board. The acceleration is much better. More control with a lot of wind. Only jibbing is more difficult.

@@robrockwindsurfboards75 For a windfoil hybrid is there a board tail design that would allow for better foil pumping vs a sail pump?
@willgraham81245 жыл бұрын
@@woodyadal962 I believe the idea for the JP board was that increasing the volume in the tail increases the pumpability of the board. However in that case, the step was so big that it actually made the pumping action harder. Personally I don't think cut outs in the tail would help earlier flight. As the cut outs are there to reduce drag once the board is planning. By with point you'd be flying on the foil anyway. I think starboard probably have the best foil board design currently.

You do realise that you managed to succeed in a design which jp failed in :)
@mark0512625 жыл бұрын
Mert Ozener to be fair, the failed JP board was a foil board, not a regular windsurf board
@Beachbumextraordinaire5 жыл бұрын
mark051262, correct me if I am wrong, but the shortcoming in JP’s attempt stemmed from this “ridged” rocker design was its inability to plane easily, something that is presumably an asset in foiling, just as it is in regular windsurfing. In this respect, Rob Rock seems to have pulled it off. Moreover, his new board is also foil proof.
