Once again I am building a huge modular game board. This time it's a Medieval dock full of cool 3d-printed buildings, bridges and little props.
All models are from the Ancrabourg kickstarter by 3D-layeredscenery

The idea to just print a thin layer for the top most part of the cobble streat and then use foam is genius. Saved me so much time .

Thanks for sharing. There's so much here I want to do as well. While I don't play, I've always thought dioramas look like a fun hobby I could and should try. I've finally made the big step; printed a few buildings and ordered some paint and brushes. Can't wait to get started, and am already on the hunt for new buildings!

Nice build. I enjoyed watching it come together. Creating maps with both sides balanced mechanically must be difficult to plan. A long plain with woods on both sides and a central feature is easy to balance. A city seems like it takes more planning. I do like the port section with the two choke points.

It looks great, but there is one thing that has grown to irk me over medival terrain builds as I've grown older,and that's the ever present tendency to over-age and make everything look dirty and poorly maintained, as that's just not how people would live or work back then anymore than we do now. People did take care of their homes and work places just as much then as we do today. If they couldn't afford painting or lime washing their houses, they made damned sure that they at least oiled and tarred the timbers regularly, made the kids keep the street in front of the home and shop swept clean and kept moss and algae away from rotting the house by any means afforded to them.
@Lybbansminiatures
@Lybbansminiatures 2 жыл бұрын
I am sure you are right although accounts from museums i have visited tells of how the streets were just mud and people threw their garbage and excremebt outside the windows. Basically the whole city reeked and was a horrible mess. People were poor and dirty. Also its more a rule of cool than historical accuracy on my part. Its just what i like.

Fantastic video. Your work is inspiring for sure. Thanks for the tips and guidance as always. I'm assuming that you used the 32mm scale files for these boards since 3DLayerscenery only are offering 32mm and 15mm scale files for this project. In your experience, can you use 28mm miniatures with the 32mm scene and still have it work? I funded the kickstarter but didn't notice the lack of 28mm scale files until after I was finished. (Yeah, my bad for that but every other set of files I have purchased had 28mm scale files so didn't think to look.) Thanks!

@Lybbansminiatures
@Lybbansminiatures 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. Its the basic line of liquitex paints. The ratio is really hard to tell as i kinda mix till i get a good consistency. Its probably close to 20% paint or less at least. I would suggest trying it out on a smaller piece till you are happy. I will probably have to make a recipe some day as my last batch was way too thin. Haha

Not that I don't appreciate the work that flowed into making such detailed sets...but one question remains: is it really worth it? Who plays this? How often is this environment reused in a campaign? Who has the necessary room to put these sets up - and even more pressing: where to store them, when not in use?
@Lybbansminiatures

Well... if you have full sized ship models for ~28mm minis, might as well also set up docks and a harbor wharf area for them too. It does get a bit space intensive. And for roleplay, these kind of layouts are more playset than practical terrain unless you have a lot of fights down at the docks. If you're going to make large 2'x2' tiles or 2'x4' tiles you also need to make shelves to store them too, perhaps under the gaming table. If you oversize the table surface a bit to say 6'x10', and keep the play area to 4'x8', there's room for people legs underneath and player surface for books and sheets, and you could store ~12 whole tables worth of big tiles under the table in ~3"-4" shelves. Less if the shelves and table surface are more modest. Kinda have to have a big gameroom for this stuff...15'x15' or 20'x20' or bigger to be comfortable with a big table and shelves on the walls for more terrain. Aside from the awesome factor of the terrain, if you want to re-use the harbor layout a lot in a roleplaying game scenario you kinda have to contrive reasons to need to be down at the harbor. If you are running a nautical themed game and this is your home port it could work though. This sort of setup probably makes more sense for skirmish games where the terrain is more integral to the game rules....people who set up dedicated wargame tables tend to leave them set up for storage, and try to make the tiles modular enough so the layout can be changed up with a lot of variety with only a few extra tiles and rotating and shifting the tiles..... The tiles Lybbans used in this video aren't terribly modular...I'd love to see sketches of how he would layout 4-6 more 2'x2' or 2'x4' tiles to make it modular and flexible for 4'x6' or 4'x8' or 6'x8' or 6'x10' tables. 6' wide is about the max you can get away with on a table for terrain and still reach. I suspect that the Quay sections will be kind of goofy if not glued down, especially since it's a huge time and cost saver to use the foam trick he used to do the large cobbled areas, and the tile blocks are pretty light when printed. I'm considering molding and casting the tiles though, as it takes a long time to print them on FDM...it's quite a bit faster on a resin printer, but with molds and depending on what material (hydrostone vs resin) you can crank them out in more like 10 minutes per mold vs ~1 day on fdm with 50 micron layers, or ~4 hours for 2 tiles on a medium sized resin printer. Still working out how to cast them hollow... solid plaster is going to be heavy and solid resin is too expensive. I've been messing around with graphing out potential layouts...since the quay tiles are 3" (75mm) square, a 2'x2' tile works out to 8x8 squares. I don't like the 6"/2 square wide canals as they are too small for most boats, especially with docks added, and the bridges block the canal up, but 3 square/9" wide canals make sense....the tile layouts need to be offset so one side generally has 2 squares of quay, then the 3 square canal, then a 3 square quay. I suppose 2-square canals make sense if they are just for sewage and drainage, and to serve as terrain obstacles...they just aren't wide enough to navigate so there wouldn't be an extensive network of them. But it also remains to be seen how the stretch goal harbor walls and bridges are implemented to suggest additional layouts, as well as how the buildings that integrate with quay fit in (e.g. the tavern with waterline entrance and the warehouse and prison, as well as however the sewers turn out)... To be fair, a real busy port city would tend to have simpler straight quay wall pier along the long side of the table with things jutting off of it, and the rest of the table could just be raised quay where you could layout various buildings and streets, so in that case you could get a lot of variety simply by moving the buildings around. This is probably one of the only practical layouts if you are going to be using Reaper's Sophie's Revenge ship with this which is around 3' long, or the other big ships from the Ancrabourg kickstarter or the ones from PrintableScenery or the Wizkids one... I have several 3d printed ones and a converted playmobile ship which I'll be using with the tiles I eventually make... A long straight pier wall and sections of entirely raised quay are the first tiles I will make, as that setup will be very flexible for pulling a ship up to the pier and arranging my building models in a variety of ways to represent different port cities. And maybe some kind of breakwater...I'll probably use the lighthouse from Bones 6 too.

I got them through the kickstarter, a friend of mine would print them for me. My question is, how many parts do I need from everyone to make a board as awesome as yours? My girlfriend loves freebooters faith and I want to build her a board. Subscription is out^-^
@Lybbansminiatures
@Lybbansminiatures 2 жыл бұрын
I am not sure, i cant remember how many i printed. Easiest way is to plan it by measuring. The quay pieces are 7,5x7,5cm so a 60x60cm board piece is 8x8 tiles.

@@Lybbansminiatures Men vad trevligt!

Look nice... but not really playable for a wargame, or even D&D (modular terrain is better in my opinion). That's my biggest issues with lot of 3D printed terrain, is that it look good, but not really playable. Not enough space inside (even the wooden docks are really small), no destroyed version, need to increase the size but modular terrain is easier to print & assemble. Your previous version one year ago look more interesting to play on.
@Lybbansminiatures
@Lybbansminiatures 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I can agree that most printable houses are too small to play in but i never do that anyway. The docks are fine. A mini fits there. Its perfect for mordheim and frostgrave and those kinda of games.

Buildings are immaculate, however the layout of the streets is too straight, which seems to be a bit at discord with the idea of medieval city-port.
