I love watching this because I'm getting a lot of confirmation on the techniques I've learned since picking up the hobby. Things like Tamiya Extra Thin, wet sanding, masking by using a toothpick or tweezers to outline the gaps... it confirms how far I've come in my skills to see someone with far more experience doing the same techniques!

As more a question than a comment, you find that Mr. Hobby Leveling Thinner plays nice with Tamiya's acrylics? I never tried mixing them since the Tamiya is an alcohol base from my understanding, but I have quite a few old pots of Tamiya laying around and if Leveling Thinner works great with them, that just makes my color palette wider.

Thanks so much for your kind words, and I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! And the basics always work - they are the building blocks on which everything else stands! A firm foundation there really helps as you learn new techniques and try new products. I've always felt that a lot of times people I've talked to who were frustrated by a product or technique simply did not have the foundation in the basic "tools of the trade". So you're right on track! Yes, I use Mr. Color Leveling Thinner with Tamiya paints. It works great! I'm still pretty new to the gunpla scene and have seen dozens of model kit customizing tutorials on youtube, but I've never seen anyone use a mechanical pencil to panel line their kits. I think it's a genius technique! Not only is it cheap and readily available in most households, it also looks nice! I will definitely be using this technique! Thank you for posting these videos and sharing your techniques! Also, Gouf Custom is one of my favorite designs and I think what you did with it is stunning to look at!

I agree. And even more "toyetic" color schemes look great with a more desaturated paint job. The first gunpla I took to 100% completion was an RX-78-5 "Gundam Unit 5" which is white, red, yellow, and almost-black brown. Mixing up my own shades and playing very sloppy with my black panel accent wash gave it a wonderful desaturated look that I'm very proud of. Even if my panel lines look like crap and one of the waterslide decals is misaligned because I smudged it before sealing it and didn't notice... I'm a bit bitter about that last part.

@@JonBius gotten back into gunpla after a 20yr hiatus... My dad had a renowned independent hobby store in London during the 70s... Youre skills have been inspiring for doing the hg gunpla. It's technique, patience etc, let alone researching/finding/purchasing scale specific afv/infantry/buildings... But that's on me... Got back into it after discovering 30mm kits, got a back log of about 60 30mm/gundam builds right now. And about 100+ 1/144 miniatutes to process... Seemed like a good idea at the time.

Wonderful video and beautiful work! When the model is complete, all weathering done, etc, do you ever do a final clear coat to protect it?
@JonBius4 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! It depends on what I've applied really. This one used Tamiya paints with Mr. Color Leveling Thinner, so it will grip the plastic very well. Once the weathering products fully cure, they should be very solid too. Because I wanted varying degrees of "sheen" for this one, I did not add a final top coat on this one, but that was more for finish reasons than anything. On others, especially if I want an overall flat look, I'll add a matte top coat, and then add any final gloss weathering over that. (Fluids leaks, etc) If you plan on handling the model, a top coat is a must - but even then you will eventually get some "rub off" here and there. I sell all my pieces on Ebay, and I make sure to let the buyer know it is not intended to be moved around a lot, but rather posed and left in place. I guess the rule of thumb is - when in doubt, top coat! :) Thanks again for watching and commenting!
@Bob-b7x6v2 ай бұрын
You dodged a bullet not using Mr. Color paints. Bandai requires really tight mixes of up to 4 different paints for some MS colors. Luckily they made life easier for Gundam Modelers with a separate paint line later on that's Gundam-specific.

Thank you so much! I am so happy you enjoy them. :) I don't have a video on wet sanding, though that is a great idea. Will the normal tamiya cement work like the thin cement? just curious
@JonBius4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure, actually, as I don't use it. Assuming it is essentially the same core adhesive/solvent, I'd guess it would. The benefit of the Extra Thin of course is its ability to flow, so it covers mating edges quickly, but does not leave loads of cement to clean up. I'd say give it a test on some spare plastic! Thanks for watching and commenting!

most people would finish their gunpla without any further afford. they would finish this kit in 3hours. those who do small paint spots , panel lining and top coat are already in small numbers ; maybe less than 1/10persons. this would consume few more hours something between 7-12hours. and for this level of finish. maybe 1/100 or 1/300persons . im not sure how many hours this kind of finish would take maybe 15 - 30hours?
@JonBius Жыл бұрын
I don't recall exactly on this one, but typically on a fully weathered model I can spend anywhere from 25 to 80 or more hours. It all depends on the size of the model and the complexity of the weathering. Thanks for watching and commenting!

could you have just built it normally and then done the glue and whatever?!
@JonBius4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can absolutely do that. The reason I like to assemble it, and then disassemble, is so I can see where seam lines are, and basically make a plan for the sub-assemblies I'll break the kit into. But simply assembling it, gluing it, and then painting it will definitely work. I've done that a few times too. Thanks for watching and commenting - have fun with your build!
