The weathering makes sense in the lore. Space ships in this universe spend much of their time submerged underwater. As that is where they are stored when being overhauled, decommissioned, or just plain laid up between wars. New ships are also symbolically launched into the sea before immediately being launched into space.

I'm pinning this comment because there's a few questions around why there's weathering, especially streaking "down" - well mostly because that's what the box art depicts, and it does spend time in the atmosphere where the rust, dirt and grime would be picked up by rain and gravity. The silver chipping is mostly caused by space debris. Hope that helps!
@LieshaCichol
@LieshaCichol 7 жыл бұрын
If you have seen the 2199 series that the model is based on (not first TV series), there were few occasions where the ship scraped badly against other ship&rammed into a building head first. On each occasion, you could see scrape mark for at least an episode following the "incidents." My interpretation of streaks on the box art would from those scratches (=the art is drawn in "return trip," not on the way)

Space ships in this universe also spend much of their time submerged underwater. As that is where they are stored when being overhauled, decommissioned, or just plain laid up between wars. New ships are also symbolically launched into the sea before immediately being launched into space. So the weathering makes a lot of sense. And well space is a very dusty place overall... So spaceships WILL pick up their fair share if dirt and grime.

If any you complaining about the weathering saw the show, you would know that the ship was converted from the original sunken Yamato in it's resting place at the dried sea bed and was flown out directly to space after breaking loose from the rocks! They didn't pull it out to give it a fresh paintjob before its maiden voyage to Iscandar!!!

That was changed in 2199. Now, the old IJN Yamato is camoflage for the construction of the SBY underneath it. The 2199 Yamato is also larger than the old original SBY. The original was 267m in length. The 2199 Yamato is 333m. It was enlarged based on calculations of the size of the first bridge on the original SBY. The producers felt the original ship's first bridge was bigger inside than the outside would indicate. So, they took the apparent measurement of the first bridge and designed the new Yamato around it.

In the late 70s, watching Star Blazers (the overdubbed American version) was the best part of having to get up for school. It was odd and silly at times, but to a nine year old boy whose only experience with anime was Speed Racer it was amazing. It's cool how they added depth and context to the Gamilons. Most of the Gamilons in the show are stock characters, but they developed Deslok into a decently fleshed out character. In the end you understand why he did what he did. Obviously I thought the ship was amazing. It was a spaceship that was based on a WW2 battleship, which seemed odd (even with the in-show explanation. Eventually I realized that the Gamilon Empire was an allegory for The US and Earth is Japan. I'd go deeper into all of the symbology (and there's a lot), but that would spoil it if you want to watch the show. Anyway, I can't tell you how many thousands of times I drew that damn ship well into my teens. And I took with me what that show taught me about the Japanese zeitgeist.

Very, VERY nicely done. This is mine and so many others all time favorite fictional space ship. I do hope you have seen the series since doing this video because it is one of the best anime series of all times. Something that not many people realize is that when the series came to America they changed the name of the ship to the Argo because they believed that the historical significance of the name Yamato would upset too many Americans.

I haven't built a model kit in ages, but all I had in my youth required gluing. So I'm quite surprised to see this all just snaps together. Either way, I love the kit and the work you've put in! I saw one of those in a comic book store in Sydney five years ago. Gorgeous model! I think if I ever build one, there will be LEDs inside. Edit: Immediately after posting, it occurred to me that with a model this size, snap action might offer structural advantages over simple glue joints...

Great work as always :) As for your fit issues with the hull, not masking the inner sides before spraying might be the culprit. I know it's a real pain in the butt and adds quite a bit of time to the project but it makes all the difference in the world when it comes to final assembly. Bandai kits fit so well they don't leave much room for any paint or primer on the inner seams.

As a fan of the most recent movie (never saw the original stuff but here's the trailer for the movie if anyone is interested: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z6fNZppreNd8pqM) I bought this same model along with the Gundam wing yamato expansion set 1. It's been sitting here in the box for almost two years as I realized maybe this wasn't the best choice for my first model build ever...even though I also naively also bought every possible model building tool and paint set there is. I'm not so much concerned with the assembly...more the decal application and painting. So I realized I needed to slow my roll and take a step back. So I bought and will start with the "Pegasus Hobbies Luna Rocketship 1/144th Scale #9111" as it only has like 17 snap together pieces total. On the bright side I have all the tools and paint sitting on standby for whenever I get around to building something. And yes....I realize how silly that was and is.

Looks damn good. The only model kit that I ever had was a B-36 Peacemaker from the 80s. I as a kid, attempted to build it, but I was way in over my head. And I never got past painting a few parts.

I like how you used a sponge and dabs of silver paint to give it the chipped paint effect. Great idea.

Thanks a bunch for this video. I love seeing your techniques. I found your video pretty informative overall. Some of the edits did feel a bit jarring, but there's honestly nothing anyone could have really missed because of it; so no worries. If you're curious, on Naval ships, the Bridge Towers were called Pagota Towers, in reference to Pagota Masts of older ships.

Looks fantastic. I've got a 1/1000 version on the way, hopefully I can do an ok job of it. You should watch the show, it's one of those rare occasions where the remake is even better than the original.
