Wow wow wow, Chris! What a beautiful set of mallets! And again, your craftsmanship astounds me. I would have broke down and used the miter saw and table saw almost immediately. I love that spalted maple handle, gorgeous! But the other elements that you put into each one really set it off from the typical "pretty mallet" build... like the hand-made brass transition and the protruding wedged mortise with the chamfer. But mainly it's just a stellar choice of wood that sets it apart from the rest, you really made some awesome decisions and the design is perfect. I was so excited to see my sticker slapped up on your cabinet! Thanks for the shout out! I just hope I can live up to the hype, haha! Give Utz another bone from Fisher's Shop. :)

Fisher’s Shop was the first subscription I added since 2015. I was won over by the wholesome humor, a subtle Christian presence, and I’m also a Michigan native who (sadly) moved away. I’ve shared the videos, downloaded his plans, and when talking to my dad about it he immediately recognized the name and said he knew the Fisher family. Chances are I’ve met this master woodworker in passing and if I did I missed an awesome opportunity to learn his craft in person.

It sucks that you live in a neighborhood like that’s with upper class people cause it looks all cookie cutter clean and has people who watch everything you do. That sucks. Most Americans use to live in amazing places but I’m not a fan of neighborhoods unless it’s a blue collar relaxed neighborhood that doesn’t care how many inches your freaking grass is. It’s nature for god sakes lol

I love them both but definitely for display only. But that’s just me. I’ll be making some. I love to work with wood. When my dad passed away I asked my mother how they (equipment) he had everything. She said it’s obvious Kerry gets it all. Three girls we all worked with it. Needless to say we were crushed. And the golden boy wins again. He got everything of my dads motorcycle etc yes we rode them too. I didn’t usually talk back to my mother but couldn’t help saying. “Mother are you kidding? It’s not eighteenth century we can vote now too! She cried I let it go. 😭I still can’t believe it. I can’t afford to buy it brother won’t sell it. My father has been dead nine years and bro has done nothing with any of it. So men out there please think of your daughters.

Hey Chris, gorgeous mallets! One advice, the Germans have a saying which translated means "Life is too short to drink a low quality wine." Thus, we can apply the same idea to your mallets. Just use them and enjoy them. As they get older, thru normal use, they will reveal their true beauty. Cheers. :)

@@silvermediastudio So true! And the same is true with violins. Those Stradivari that just sit in vaults start getting stiff and if not played, they won't sound the same in a few years. That's why they started to lend them to a few select artists.

I'm 50 now. In '97 I took a chunk of dogwood tree and cut it down into a rectangle and drilled and chiseled a hole through it and used a wedge to keep it in there. And it worked great for chiseling. I didn't refine it or treat it. Just used it as it was. No glue. Most of that stuff stays put anyway. That spalted maple one was cool looking

Great work man! Quick tip on filing/rasping from the machinist world: They only cut on the push stroke. Putting your focus on controlling the push stroke, and lifting the file/rasp off the workpiece on the pull will give a much cleaner cut (not that yours looked bad or anything!) and prolong the life of your tool. Try pushing with a long stroke and a twisting motion around a radius. Cheers from Victoria, BC!

Great work. If you want a heavier mallet, you can bore out a wide hole in the halves, glue on one side side to create a cup, fill it with lead shot, and then glue on the other slab. You can leave the lead shot loose for a "dead blow" type mallet, or pot it with glue or epoxy for something heavy and solid.

Warning: verbose comment :-) 30 years ago I would have agreed with you that such things of beauty shouldn't be marred by everyday use. Now, I've come to the conclusion that making -- and *using* -- beautiful tools is an essential part of the acts of creation we perform. Making something as gorgeous as these mallets into shelf queens would be a shame, IMHO. Go ahead and whack those holdfasts. Also, though I still do a lot of flat work, I'm mostly a turner -- so it was fun to see you spin stuff on that beautifully cared for old lathe. I would have assembled the entire mallet before turning the handle. A big enough chuck, extension jaws, or a jig would secure the head. A cove cut would transition from the rectangular head to the round handle; modern carbide or high-end high speed steel lathe tools can easily cope with non-ferrous metals like your spacer. Finally, beware doing much woodturning: there's high addiction potential there :-) Clyde

Hey Jeremy, Ive had several comments like this. Each person has their opinion but I look at like this. An artist creates art for the sole purpose of pleasing the eye or insighting emotion. I love woodworking and I love making beautiful things. I feel like I can make a piece of art that represents woodworking and be totally ok looking at it, and holding it and appreciating it as a beautiful thing that I designed and created. It doesnt have to be used to be useful to me. Just like many many people have old tools hanging in their shop as decoration/art. They arent be used as intended, but they are still serving a purpose for that person. Just my philosophy. And just so you know, I added a leather patch to one and use it from time to time.

Thanks for the video Chris, awesome craftsmanship. I have gone through a lot of these comments, you all must have some pretty fantastic work shops, I can't believe I'm the only person with shop envy enough to ask for a video tour of Tom's shop!!

What beautiful mallets. You are quite the craftsman and have to be proud of your work. As for picking a favorite I too love both and each one is special.

that marbled handle is truly exquisite... one of those mallets to your lathe teaching friend would be a selfless act, and he'd love it and appreciate it.

Awesome … absolutely awesome !!! My neighbor, Ernst Von Clomber, makes the traditional Wooden Steak Knifes from his homeland, across the Atlantic. He uses an exactly calibrated Lathe, and fine Titanium Chisels to produce these outrageously impressive, polished mahogany, and golden oak Steak Knifes, just like what was traditionally taken with the utmost respect, in the old country, across the sea.

What a lovely pair. Who would use those in anger, not me I'd be to worried I'd bruise them. Good for decoration. Nice skills.

First of all, I really like your handsaw jig at the beginning. It's so simple I have no clue why I never thought of that! The finish on the curly maple gives ya shivers!
