This is the best informative video I have ever watched. Makes so much sense and totally made me stop beating myself up over the fact I thought I was "doing it wrong". I've never really thought about what type of seat I use but I do know that I've used all 4 before. I think you just have to use whatever is needed for the horse​.

My favorite is the half seat or light seat. I feel the most comfortable in this position. I am a hunter/equitation. My trainer always tells me to have a deep or driving seat. My horse isn't really lazy or energetic, so I like to move forward with a half/light seat to always pop over and lightly come back over jumps. I'm a little confused on why she pushes this so hard on me? She describes my seat as "Perchy" is this good bad? Or should I fix it. Little confused. Thank you this video really helped me! Isabel Richards it’s fine to sit half seat, but perching is when you are too far forward and your shoulders are back while leaning forward and your butt sticks out (like a bird perching) your trainer just wants you to be more upright with an arch in the back with your shoulder and eye up. You can be forward without sticking your butt out (it looks terrible) hope this helps :) and good luck !

Good video! I tend to ride in full seat, as I jump on ponies currently, and the courses are very tight so you need all the balance and use of legs that you've got! Also I have a very speedy, strong nippy pony and he gets too fast on haf/lightseat

Great video, I like full seat when in between jumps ☺️ then again I haven’t been jumping to long so I may change. Even cantering everyone like to canter in half seat but I like full seat plus I can’t anyway on Nova I’m still learning to control her when she’s had a canter she gets very excited 😂

I use half seat between the jumps bc the horse I ride is pulling me forwards (very *beep* annoying) but as soon as I gotta prepare for a tight turn or the jump I always do full seat.. I have no idea if thats correct but I feel more safe in full seat. Those days where I have the energy to pick the fight and actually stay in the saddle, I use full seat all the time (the horse very strong, we’re working on it aha) but I never use light seat or driving seat, light seat isn’t something we learn in DK and driving seat just doesn’t look pretty (I know it’s not all about looks but I just can’t make myself do it ahah)

Jennifer Rasmussen shouldnt be jumping Learn and get a seat before Jumping No fights are fun and there is a Hugh misunderstanding between you and your horse if you have to fight also maybe find a different horse to ride so you can learn to feel secure As any good rider Has to adapt to his horse not the other way around Maybe your horse dosent like the way you ride him learn all different seats and reason behind them and when to use them these people in this video are the best of the best Pretty hard to argue with them learn more stop fighting your horse Change for the better

i prefer full seat and light seat. i like light seating a lot more but i was taught in flat with a full seat so thats one of my defaults

I always ride in a full seat because if I get up on a lighter seat my horse doesn't feel the "push", he gets anxious, feels unbalanced and drops into trot.

Is the half/lighter seat more of an American thing? We only get taught to use a lighter seat when going cross country in England, and a little when showjumping. We obviously don't have hunters/jumpers or equitation and that seems to put a lot of emphasis upon this.

sophie davidson yes, I’ve found it more of an American thing, thought I prefer it for jumping rather than having a full seat all the time. I find it can give more freedom for going over the jumps.

yes you do have hunter jumpers in england You will learn to ride all seats until your as good as these guys here in the video and not all horses can be ridden the same So watch and Listen to Mr Trarig Explain why each rider is doing what he doing more you learn the more youll change and after you have ridden thosands of horses believe me you learn all seats If you want to win

It’s definitely an American thing. Here in Ireland it’s a full seat for show jumping and a lighter seat for cross country.

I think it also depends on the type of horse you learn to ride on. I grew up riding quarter horses here in America, and they were very lazy and rode well with a full seat, very upright and shoulders pulled held square. However nowadays I’m always getting told by my trainers that my seat is too driving.

I'm a new rider and I have a question: should not heels stay under the hips? I see a lot of show jumper that sit with leg forward, isn't a chair seat that? I ride with my legs under me, is it wrong?

Your hips hands and shoulders should always be in a straight line, like you could get a meter stick or ruler and measure it precisely or draw a straight line along your hips, hands and shoulders on a photo. I only do show jumping and cross country, and my trainer says that’s the best position for me and my horse. I recommend going to your trainer, as they have been riding their whole life and know all the tricks of the this helps!

ThePervinca99 you can, actually. You can sit in a full seat with a straight line from your heels, hips and hands. You just need to really sink into your heels and it’ll come naturally to you.

If you go to 1.12 on the video it shows the different seats, you can see in the driving seat that Rodrigo Pessoa is in a chair seat. I find with jumping saddles and short stirrups it can be impossible sometimes not to be in chair seat, especially ones where the stirrup bar is place forward. Rodrigo Pessoa is so good he can be this much in chair seat and then still catch up with the horse motion, whereas I get horribly left behind, so I stay with a light seat or half seat so my lower leg is in correct position for the jump

Word of advice: if you ever want to be an equitationally correct rider and be an effective, advanced equestrian, don’t ever take inspiration from the position or riding style of any hunter or equitation riders. They have some of the worst, riding-pretty-and-not-correctly “equitation” in the entire industry.

Bear Creek Sport Horses actually, if you watch current equitation competitions you would see that you are flat out wrong. Sam Walker, winner of the ASPCA Maclay Finals 2018, had the most effective and technical riding of the course, however his back wasn’t “arched” as many people see as “pretty”. Equitation is truly about technical riding not how one looks

I don't like that full seat/driving seat. My olympic trainer referred to it as "riding for a stop". He insisted we always ride up and forward to encourage forward movement and to allow the horse to jump easily under us.

I usually ride half/light because the horse I ride is a dinosaur that needs to be pulled forward constantly, so if I'm sitting the gallop he'll slow down too much :(
