I understand your concern - nobody likes to be told what to do. Problem is that firefighters are obligated to protect you and your structure and a poorly built building puts their lives in danger if it catches fire. Plus, if you move, the building doesn't go with you. It remains in the community for decades to come. So the community, and the next owners have an interest in knowing that it is a safe structure. The big question is where to draw the line on requirements...

Not just that but tell us the codes and regulations wirhout it breaking the bank. Theres reasons for home revovations that end up on the news, codes weren't blatently ignored in most cases, they were unaffordable so were not followed. Like i stated all code books should be free or atleast affordable not close to $200.00. And as a general contractor i gotta get em all. Ibc, irc, nec, fire suppression, energy, plumbing. over $1,000.00 every 3 yrs is nuts

Today is 3/27/2022 what happens if the foundation shifts and it's a rental property that gets rented out multiple times without ever fixing the foundation?

This is something that would be best addressed by your local government. If you are in the US, go to your cities website, call the cities main line, ask to be connected to the permitting department, and relay your concerns to them.
