Building a Tandoor Oven was surprisingly easy even with the limited tools and limited space that I have. It turned out very well and I was able to make a tasty meal of Tandoori Chicken, Malai Chicken, and some scrumptious Naan Bread. ...And it was all done using materials found around the house or at the hardware store and it was all done well under $100!
Chapters
• Introduction • Build a Tandoor Oven F...
• Building The Tandoor Oven • Build a Tandoor Oven F...
• Making Tandoori Chicken & Naan • Build a Tandoor Oven F...
This was inspired/triggered from watching a KZbin video from the @Treasure Hunt Foodies where James and Kim visited an Indian Restaurant that happens to be located in a gas station: • BEST Louisiana Indian ... . That triggered the cravings and I suspect the only way to have fresh Indian food with the corona-virus quarantine is to do it yourself... which includes building your own Tandoor Oven. If you would like the recipes for the Tandoori Chicken or the recipe for the Naan Bread, please drop me a note.
Just a word of warning…this is an experiment and there are dangers when using materials in applications that were not intended for their original use and using non-food safe materials for the purposes of food preparation. I’m very cautious of contaminants such as lead or other substances in the building materials and accept the risks on my end. If you do decide to try this, please proceed with caution and know the risks involved! I do not take responsibility for the risks involved in building such a project and this I’m sharing my own experience. It might be best to treat this as entertainment and support your local Indian restaurants with your take-out orders :-)
All in all, in my experience, it was a fun project and helped focus the attention to something different than the news. Luckily our hardware store has online pick-up so getting the materials was quite easily done. Items can be found on Amazon, Home Depot, and Canadian Tire. Here’s what I’ve used:
• 2 x 15” Terra Cotta Clay Pots or smaller
• www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/te...
• 1 x Extra Large Terra Cotta Clay Pot
• www.homedepot.com/p/Penningto...
• Planter Caddy:
• Clay Plant Feet:
• 3-4 bags of Vermiculite (9L)
• Round Wire Rack:
• Lead Testing Kit:
• Fire Extinguisher:
Again, if you do decide to tackle this, the risks and responsibilities are yours...be careful! This oven can reach over 1000° fahrenheit and have a fire extinguisher nearby. Using a lead testing kit on the materials such as the terracotta pots would be a very good idea as well!

I'm Indian and this is spot on, I.e. Using clay pots. I've seen concrete being used but that'll change the way bread cooks (too dark and crispy outside while the insides are undercooked) this is just perfect. I'm gonna build this.

I’d recommend using a thicker wall pot on the top. It would help moderate the temperature and, once thoroughly heated, would more evenly cook the items that are further from the fire

Great video . You’ll need some kinda ventilation for the bottom of it to allow air flow into the Tundoor . And second suggestion would be use for your chicken two skewers instead of one , use them opposite side so you can use the hook at the end of skewers to cook both sides of chicken evenly. However great video and thanks

Hi Rajan,. Thank you so much for reaching out and I hope you give this a try.. with the warm weather I'm using mine quite often now and really loving it. Yes, I just use the garden variety vermiculate, or if you want you can use rockwool. Make sure you stay away from fiberglass as that will melt at relatively low temperatures. Let me know how it goes, really interested to hear how yours turn out.

The food looked amazing and I’m sure it was delicious! Looks like you learned a lot from last time eh? Always good to educate and get more info. Keep up the good work and stay safe Tim! Just curious what part of Vancouver do you reside? I used to live in Fairview Slopes back on the late 90’s. Miss BC, Vancouver is easily one of the most beautiful cities in the world, also the people are so chill there too!

Hi Wayne, I was born and raised in the Vancouver area. I grew up around the Hastings area (in an Italian neighborhood). I moved to Surrey recently (a few years ago) to be closer to work. Although that doesn't really make much of a difference with the remote work that's happening currently :-) We're doing pretty well here as things are opening up and we don't seem to have many cases...though I must say the majority of the people were quite mindful of the isolation. LoL ... even the local buffet sent an email indicating they were opening up ;-) I suspect it may be too soon to go at this moment. Fairview slopes is a very nice area and certainly developing very nicely. Nice to hear from a local ... will you visit here soon? :-) Take care :-)

Tim Lee yeah back then I only payed $650 and split a townhouse with the full view of the downtown harbour. That place must be at least double to triple the rent now? I’m back in my small hometown Windsor, ON. Right across the river from Detroit. That’s awesome the local buffet is opening but I agree. A bit too early. I think I’ll wait until September before I even decide upon going back to restaurants.

Did you check if the pots are lead free? Most planting pots have lead as an ingredient of the clay to allow for more plasticity during production.

Nice video dude. I just suggest to use firewood instead of charcoals and to apply a metal plate on the bottom of the meat stick avoiding thus the burning heat

If you choose a larger pot for the top it'll over lap and leave a nice ledge on the inside for your skewers to rest on
