Building Crab Traps Part Two

Part two of three parts showing the building of a crab trap for use on the coast of Texas. Raw Video.

If you are referring to the upper chamber, the crabs will try to escape by going up. Once they get in the upper chamber, it is harder for them to find there way back down to the lower chamber and then out the funnels. Crabs will eventually escape out of the tunnels. Double chamber traps work much better than single chamber traps. I have used single chamber traps in shallow water and you need to check them more often.

Cut out the opening for the bait holder and attach the cover on one side using loose fitting hog rings. Insert a length of bungie chord about two inches down from the hinged side of the door and feed it through the center of the cover. Stretch the chord and secure it together with two hog rings. Feed it through the opening so that the hog rings are inside the trap.

Start with the oldest post and work your way up. The supplies were purchased at Home Depot, Lowes, and San Leon Marina. The wire for the main body is available at America Fence in this area.

Bottom of Trap Cut out thirty five meshes (52.5”), flat on both sides. Fold side up at 8 meshes and 11 meshes from the ends. Attach bait holder in the center using hog rings.

Bait Holder Cut out 24” wire hardware cloth 18” long with a tab on one end. This will make two bait holders and three covers. Cut 9” with a tab off of the top and bottom. Cut the middle into three sections for the covers. Roll one of the 9” tall sections to form the bait holder, bend the tabs to secure. Insert one of the covers onto the top tabbed section and secure.

Baffle Cut out eighteen meshes (27”), tabbed on both sides. Bend center mesh over the side of a 2X4. Attach baffle to the bottom 5 meshes up from the bottom. Attach the top of the bait box to the baffle using hog rings. Cut the opening in the baffle, starting one mesh in and leaving tabs on all sides. Cut 4 mesh in cutting on opposite sides of the center wire. Fold the tabs up. Repeat on opposite side.

It is cheaper to make him and buy them, but if you are just in it to save money the time is not worth the savings. I enjoyed making the traps and modifying them in different ways to try to improve my catch.

Funnels Cut out five meshes leaving a tab. Fold in half and secure the open side by folding. Fold the two flat end corners to form a funnel. Cut an opening one mesh up and five meshes in from both sides. Attach funnel using tabs. Repeat on all four sides.

Bend the corners on the two pannels but not on the side where the door goes on it makes the trap easier to build 😊

Top of Trap Cut out thirty eight meshes (57”), tabbed on both sides. Attach the tabs to the bottom and use hog rings to secure sides. Make sure the trap is flat and attach the baffle to the sides of the top using hog rings.

Door Cut out four meshes (6”), flat on both sides, set aside until top is attached.

Escape Rings Install two escape rings in each chamber by cutting out the center of four meshes and using the tabs to secure the rings. Attach the float with enough line for the area you plan to crab. Bait and catch some crabs.

Attach the door to the opening using three electrical straps. The center strap should be attached in a figure 8 style to keep the door from sliding side to side. Fold the top over the top edge of the trap. Insert the plastic latch on a length of bungie chord and attach it in two places to the door. Tie a bio-degradable string to the top of the trap to hook the latch in.

Hey great video. I grew up on tybee ga and I learned the waters grom my parents. We do it all oyster crabs clams etc. I always wantef to learm how to make crab traps of my own. I was sea sick trying to keep my eyes focused, what was the final results? Why was that inside wire placed over the bait box? How many entrances Did you put? Any escape rings? Degradable panel or mesh? I live in Florida an these trap spec’s seem unlimited.

I got my supplies for the funnels at Home Depot and most of the rest of the supplies at San Leon Marine Supply, I did find that you can get the main wire cheaper at Houston Fence and Supply in Galveston. As for directions, I just modified different designs to meet my needs.

I still don't quite understand the point for that part 8:46 . Is it to put some crabs up there for more space at the bottom until you retrieve the trap?
