Building Dirt Jumps by hand - Repairing damage, making improvements and building new lines

After a long riding season, the trails need repairs and tweaks to make the next season even better. It's a time to put down the bike and think about what you want to ride next year, what can we build!??
I've been lucky enough to build trails with this crew for many years- I started to film our progress in 2012 and have made yearly videos since. This is a remastered version of a video first made in 2016 with added shots I have since found on old computers.
This is the last year that I made one video to show everything we had done, choosing to go for a series of shorter videos instead. I plan to put these short videos together to make one more trail building megamix which will be online in 2 weeks. Please subscribe if you want to check it out.

These trails are local to me and are arguably some of the best trails in the UK. Every time I ride here there's brand new lines. I see the lads working away in the darkness sometimes.. true dedication and utter respect for these trail dogs 👊🙌

When I got a house with enough space I'll make some dirt jumps and mountain bike trails, probably won't be as big as these ones but will surely be a blast like these ones.

Yeah, I got some jumps 5km from my house that I built with some friends, the jumps are a bit cracked up so I'm going to smoothen them today, going to make them run much smoother.

U kno, I love this video, because It shows me that some people in the world have actually packable dirt, unlike me. I've tried so much, over and over, but I just don't have the type of dirt for it, my dirt is black plain, it just sticks to the back of the shovel over and over, and is terrible. People say that the type of dirt u work with doesn't even matter, but I've found that to be false. Help anyone? Dirt specifics?

I have been recently working on jumps and it takes forever to harden. Do you have any tips on watering and packing to prevent this?

Technique will vary according to what kind of dirt you are using. Make sure the dirt is damp but not too wet and keep slapping with your shovel until you can't take anymore! We also find our jumps harden a lot quicker if they are in the section that is open to the sun- in the shaded areas it can take way longer. Hope that helps.

I've been filming for quite a while now and the biggest tip I would give is to figure out the story before you start to tell it. Then make sure you have shots to tell every part of it. It's so annoying when you forget to shoot something and don't realise until it's too late! Making a plan of some sort helps avoid that. Hope that helps buddy.

We all have totally different shovels believe it or not! Some long handles, some short. Some with flat head and some pointed. I personally use a long handled shovel with a flat head for the majority of the building we do.

The dirt varies massively across our small little patch- one side is really sandy, like a beach- but the lower shaded area has much darker dirt. We mix and match as best we can!

Don't worry dude- you just have to keep digging and you will get there. There was a bloke who swam round the UK and said he just focussed on the next stroke rather than thinking about how far he had to go. I try and think like that now!
