Building DIY Roof Rack from Aluminium Construction Profiles for our Mercedes T1 Camper Van

Our Mercedes 310 T1 "Bremer" gets a DIY roof rack from aluminium constructions profiles and custom made brackets from a Polish manufacturer. Finally we want to use the roof rack to mount one or two solar panels.

Looks great, as it happens I have bought 4 of those TS brackets, I deliberated for a long time as they are quite costly. We will use them to create a rack for our solar panels as well, I like the way they follow the incline of the roof as well! Also thought about some retro style lights as well and will now do the same. Your setup looks great.

Yes, it's round, but from the same series like the square ones... www.smt-montagetechnik.de/produkte/1302n.htm It's more for design reasons that I wanted to have it, not really necessary :)

Hi. Love the videos. Can't thank you enough for the invaluable information you are providing. I am just about to purchase a 310d and am going to do a conversion myself. Do you perhaps have the dimensions of the roof rack itself ? Or do the feet adjust in the angle according to how big the rack is ?

The profiles are 4x4 cm. The transversal one is 136 cm, so the roof rack is 4+136+4cm=144cm wide. You can't adjust the angle, but you could build the rack wider, if you don't mind it being wider then the feet.

What aluminum rail brand did you use? Of all the racks that I notice, you have picked the nicest products short of fabricating something totally custom😊. I’m trying to track something like this down here in the US. I’ve found short lengths so far but nothing 10 foot or so. I’m on the hunt!

Looks very good!how are these frames attatched to the van? Drill holes in the van? I looked on the ts website also but this i'm not sure about. And do you still recommend this after two years of use?

It's not drilled, no holes necessary, just attached to the rain gutter (not sure about the correct English word for that). I can 100% recommend it :)

In 2021 when I bought it, 160 € was the standard price for 8pc without any special discount. I don't know how much the are now, but sounds like a lot of inflation... The profiles were black already, so no need to paint. Will post a link below...

Hey @cube of cars - such a nice build! Im looking to build a roof rack to my 310d but would want to use it to attach surf boards and being able to walk on it. Do you know if a constriction like yours also would support adding a deck and walking on it? Thankyou for any input on this! Cheers

Ist die Montage der Metallfüße an der Rinne auf Dauer nicht problematisch, weil da Metall auf Metall liegt und es dadurch zu Lackabrieb und Rost kommen kann? Ich überlege, mir auch so einen Dachträger zu bauen und würde da ggf noch Gummiunterlagen anbringen, bin mir aber unsicher, ob das dann noch hält. Hat da jemand Erfahrungen?

Ja, ich habe das auch noch geändert und ein Stück Fahrradschlauch dazwischen gemacht. An der Stabilität kann das ja nichts ändern. Und es ist sicher besser, damit sich da langfristig nichts abreibt.

Hallo! Ich plane die selben Dachträger zu kaufen. Kannst du mir sagen wie lange deine Querträger sind? Wenn man 2x die dicke deiner Längsträger drauf rechnet sollte man ja auch die „Gesamtbreite“ der Anlage kommen. Ich würde gerne PV drauf bauen und wissen wie Lange die Panels sein dürfen um sie Quer zu montieren, ohne links und rechts Überstand zu haben

Hi! Die Querstangen sind 136cm lang. Deine Rechnung ist grundsätzlich richtig. Ich habe die Solarpanele aber nicht AUF den Dachträger gemacht, sondern IN den Träger. Die Panele sind also bei mir gleich hoch wie der Träger selbst und schauen nicht darüber raus (und durften damit auch nur diese 136cm lang sein). Das ist m.E. optisch viel schöner. Es gibt dazu auch nochmal ein Video, wenn ich dazu komme... VG, Mike

Hallo Heiner, ich hab das auch vergeblich gesucht und dann einfach ein unlackiertes gekauft, angeschliffen, Alugrundierung und dann mattschwarzen Decklack mit Spraydose aufgetragen. Das geht eigentlich alles ganz einfach und das Ergebnis ist von den übrigen Leisten nicht zu unterscheiden. VG, Mike
