Volus Gaming: Yes - normal electric plane but it has to have a Smart Bottle with at least 300 ml of water. You can launch the “afterburner” anytime while following a predetermined course. It’s either going to boost the speed - or cause a crash depending on design and pilot skills.

If you add dish soap to the water it will foam up during pressurization and give you a much longer "burn time" with a nossle. I used to do this with my 2 liter bottle rockets and they went so high you could barely see them. A dawn dish soap cap is also a perfect nossle for the rocket as well. Percectly centered nossle and it can withstand ~100psi (along with any carbonated beverage bottle). I used a silicone tube glued around a ball filler needle and that worked well with minimal leaks.

My age is showing, I remember the rocket I got for Christmas in the late 1950s . Rubber construction, X frame launch pad, add water to rocket, attach pad, pump air with small pump, then pull string to release ....it was January when my Father took me to the park to launch it, cold, patches of snow, near or just below freezing. Didn't matter we were doing it together, spray from launch, fell back on us, cold...I was a kid and thrilled and smiled and laughed, Dad did as well. I have been waiting literally 15 years for this video. I first saw water rockets when I was living in Taiwan, and I've been dreaming of RC flight since I was a kid. If I had the time and money, I'd be deep into both of these hobbies now. Water rockets are OK for cost, but you have to build everything yourself. My RC planes keep proving that gravity is a nasty, destructive, and therefore expensive, force. If you guys are serious about, as you say, taking it to the next level (or way, way, way past what you could probably conceive as the next level) then google Air Command Water Rockets. With their water-rocket launch systems and your plane know-how, you could invent a whole new hybrid hobby.

This is a cool project! It looks like you have the Explorer pretty well dialed in. It would be interesting to see it scaled up to use a 2 liter bottle. That would present some interesting challenges with the structural strength of the aircraft and maximizing altitude given the initial weight of water. I believe PET bottles are burst rated for 120 psi so you have a good bit of room to go. Once you start approaching 100 psi you will want to come up with a method of launching that allows you to keep your distance from the bottle. I've blown apart pvc elbows on launchers near that pressure. It is easy to build a launcher that can pressurize the bottle and be released from a distance. It won't be easy to do the same and still allow you to release the pressure after the plane is in the air. A high start would come in handy to get it into the air. I'd like to see what you guys can come up with!

Howdy FliteTest! Really enjoy your videos. Watching this episode really brought back some good memories for me. I used to be a Cubmaster for a pack of Cub Scouts. We used to do a water bottle rocket building project every summer. Those puppies would soar! We didn't use a launch pin, as you demonstrated. We would use a file to dig a small groove into the launch tube, and place a small O-ring around the tube in the groove. The O-ring would help ensure a tight fit with the bottle, and we'd pump up the pressure until the bottle blew off of the launch tube on it's own accord. No leaking "propellant" until the bottle flew. I had also read about another project where someone had used a 4' (could try an 8', I suppose) T-12 fluorescent lamp protector tube in place of the bottle. The benefit in this is to allow a longer launch tube which prevents the water from actually leaving the motor until it clears the launch tube. This allows for a longer acceleration time. And, the protector tube is much more aerodynamic. Like an arrow compared to a football. If someone got REALLY creative they could maybe put swing wings or pivot-into-position wings after the tube reaches apogee on the launch. As I said, just and idea...I haven't actually tried the protector tube idea, myself. But, try the O-ring for sure. I think you'll like that.

Ditch the servo from the smart water bottle and fashion the bottle into a missile form. Link thrust release pin to missile/plane linkage so thrust is released just after separation from plane . . . Yay bottle rockets! Working as a STEM teacher and one of my favorite short projects was equipping the students with soda bottles of various sizes, cardboard, tape, hot glue, pipes and dowel rods. I just showed them the bare basics and then let them figure out the rest. By the end of the day most looked like it had been raining, but everyone had had lots of fun. ^^

Here’s a possible idea to expand on what you have already done. Using the “Jammin Jet”, how about doing a series of consecutive thrusts? Mount 2, 3, or more water bottles, each on its own switch, so that you could get a longer duration of thrust. For the Gremlin “water bazooka”, instead of launching the plane, launch a normal water rocket. Near the apex of the rocket flight, release an airplane/glider. Essentially, this would be like a 2stage rocket, first rocket is a booster to give it velocity and altitude and the second part is the smaller rocket or payload.

Great video, reminds me of playing with water rockets when I was a wee nipper! Suggestion: put some dish soap in the water, it will create a greater displacement and therefore more propulsion, i think the foaming has something to do with it. I believe this is the technique used with the more serious waterbottles that reach over 1000ft. Also, what about combining both methods to have a 2-stage rocket. High energy launch rocket and then the second slow release to give it more height. You could seriously get some quite amazing altitude I think! Would love to see a part 2 of this with improvements and go for amazing height. You also just invented a new division of the hobby! Forget DLG, this is WLG - Water Launch Glider :D

Greetings FliteTest Crew! This was an interesting video, and the challenge of building an RC airplane that is water pressure powered reminds me of one of my favorite summertime toys, which was most likely the original water rocket kit. It came with a specially designed pump with a rubber gasket and a release mechanism that you had to pull to launch 🚀 the rockets included in the kit, there was also a small funnel designed to fit the rocket nozzles, and each rocket had graduated markings so you could experiment with the amount of water you have filled the rocket with and then later you could repeat the results if you were observing closely what you were doing, and although it used a hand pump to supply the air pressure, I would just count the pumps. It was a lot of fun, but you did get wet, which was all fine on hot summer days. Recently, I have seen some amazing water pressure rockets on KZbin, and some of them are multiple stage rockets that are reaching amazing altitude. Some were attaining more than 1000 feet. I think you should research the work they have done, and then revisit this project for a really spectacular set of flights. Your mission, if you accept, would potentially be super awesome. I know that you all are more than capable of making this happen, and you could also bring into the hobby, a whole new class of RC airplane technology. I am excited to see what you do with this.
