Notes for folks who want to go faster: - Make the fuselage skinnier and longer. Fit the batteries closely and eliminate excess volume. - Switch to an H-wing rather than an X, increase the wing span and minimize the distance from the motors to the main wing. This gets most of your wing area available for lift. - Use an actual asymmetrical wing section to reduce parasitic drag from lift. - Mount the wing with some fixed angle of attack to shift lift from the body to the wing. Body lift seems free when you just consider parasitic drag. But consider induced drag and suddenly it's not so awesome. You want the wing making lots of lift in cruise and the body closer to neutral. Given how big your fuselage is compared to your wing, you'll always get a lot of fuselage lift. - Polish that surface! At that scale, you want surface deviations that are *tiny*, like under a thousandth of an inch.
@Mike-Bell6 ай бұрын
At these speeds you get all the body lift you need from 1 degree angle which means there is almost zero induced drag. No need for wings because the body is pretty big dictated by the battery size.
@IainMcClatchie6 ай бұрын
@@Mike-Bell How much does it weigh, about 3 kg? Body is about 15 cm diameter? Hmm. You're right. At 450 km/hr, sea level air density, dynamic pressure is 9600 Pa. Induced drag from 30 N of lift is maybe 1.7 N, which is 210 watts of drag. If you figure your ESC, motors, and props have a combined efficiency of 50%, that's 420 watts from the battery, or 2.5% of your battery power. I still wonder if there's a way to make it skinnier. What batteries do you use?

Congrats on the new record. You are helping to push the boundaries of FPV racing drone technology!! For a while, most quadcopter companies were so focused on 3 inch, small, light weight drones. Now there is a swing back towards 5-10 quadcopters with S8 batteries and monster ESC's. Soon we will push into S10-S12 monsters and quadcopters that can maintain flight well over 1-3 hours! It seems like every month some inventor in their lab also comes up with another use case for quadcopters. @@LukeMaximoBell1 What about sintered metal. Again, I’m no expert, I’m just asking. I am fascinated by this stuff. I fly professionally and over the past 15 years or so there have been some really neat advancements in prop tech for actual aircraft. I’m not sure what kind of RPMs your props are seeing but I imagine it is on par with something like a modern turbo prop. In that area more and more older aircraft are seeing their three and four bladed props replaced by 5, 6, and 8 bladed props with modified shapes like paddle board and modified tips. There are a few companies playing around with contra rotating designs that are interesting, making kind of an external jet prop. These mods greatly improve performance in thrust, airspeed, noise, and fuel efficacy which that last part may or may not relate to improve battery life. One of my hobby’s is shooting and there have been some really impressive strides made in metal 3D printing. There are a few suppressors on the market now that simply couldn’t be made without a 3D printer. The pressures involved in containing hot gasses from a muzzle blast are exceptionally high. I can’t imagine that something like that would fail in your application. Composites and hybrid composites likewise have proven to be very durable. It would be interesting to see these strides getting scaled down to use in UAV/drone tech. Good video on the subject kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZu5f4KgYtZmibMsi=L-SVxDF0cBbn48dT

Wow, that opening in the front was perfect and if it's opened in the back for the Air to pass through unimpeded I can imagine it must run cool even at full throttle, just like a PC pull air in and expel air out for cooler components, probably would go faster as well, just have to create a barrier inside to keep condensation to a minimum on the components especially on cooler days

Yeh the open canopy for filming allows for much better cooling in the drone!

This was so inspiring! I need to experience this kind of speed! Are there any plans to making the parts and tune available so we can build our own speed demons?
@LukeMaximoBell16 ай бұрын
Thanks so much! 🙌🏼 there are plans in the works to make a commercially available drone.

Amazing, the determination as well to keep on going, while others may have folded.

You’re smart enough to have me send you the parts for a water jet cnc system. It’s much more satisfying to do it as much as you can yourself.

You and your father are beasts! Incredible achievement. That is 93mph faster than my Turbine-powered RC Viper jet. Congratulations to you two.

awesome video! i would have loved the tuning process, but understand you don't want other ppl to copy your work

Yeh fair enough! But I can’t make the video too long. But if you’d like to see, I followed Chris Rosser’s latest tuning guide step by step 🙌🏼

Cheers mate. Excellent work on the drone. If you want to break the sound barrier with an RC vehicle, try building a supersonic RC FPV fighter jet... maybe a mini SR-71 Blackbird or something special.

Running your motors with high speed props stationary, they will always draw a lot more current then when they move at speed. So doing trial and error bench testing does not always give you the most optimum design.
@LukeMaximoBell16 ай бұрын
Yes we realised this as well. We found that in the air there is about 30% less strain on the motors.
