Consider dropping the middle 2x form about a 1/4" to create a mechanical "weep" strip on the under side of the concrete edge.
@l0gic23
@l0gic23 3 жыл бұрын
Can you expand on this a little? Thanks.
@peterdement
@peterdement 3 жыл бұрын
You create a thickened edge by dropping the form 1/4". In a section view the outside edge of the slab would be 5 1/4". Under the slab this thickened edge would be the width of the 2x form material (1 1/2" net) then reduced to the 5" standard slab thickness. This creates a 1/4" vertical face under the slab preventing water from "weeping" uphill.

As being an architect myself. Yes I have seen many office blogs or skyscrapers using the decking system to pour concrete on it. It is so common. U use wood as form work which is fine. Some use steel angles as form work welded to open hoist system. I love your videos and can’t wait to see it finished

It's obvious whatever you lack and experience, you make up for with intelligence and determination. I'm glad you have not compromised on what you want or location due to the difficulty. There's a lot of people that would have just drug a double wide in there and called it a day. Not saying there's anything wrong with that. But you're going to have a house to really be proud of.

Hi, I think I heard you say you were pouring a 5" slab and you have 1/4" slope over the entire span. Is that correct? Was your metal pan flat and the framing sloped? In other words, 5-1/4" thick at the house and 5" thick at the edge? I'm doing a similar porch project based on your design and using 2"-20GA metal decking. One of my porches is 12' and with 4" slab. I'm doing 1/8" slope per foot I have 1.5" total over 12'. I'm thinking of sloping the framing to have 5.5" thickness at the house and 4" at the edge.

15:32 Is that light I'm seeing or the light colored spray foam? Obviously light would mean gaps that concrete could seep through. Excellent FAQs review, have you discussed why concrete over wood decks? Thinking past the slabs, what are you doing for porch roof pillars and railings? That back deck is quite a ways up. Might be a good time for a sit down discussion on what's coming up/future. My last thought, while the concrete/concrete guys are there, think about footers for the steps off the porches. Can't wait to see the next steps!!

For my house I want to do the same thing but will be using concrete block with fill and pouring a concrete slab all around the house. I do not have to worry about windows or doors under the deck. I will also install an under house de-humidifier to keep the crawlspace dry. Will not have to worry about critters getting into the crawlspace. I will also extend the roof line so the concrete will be covered, so basically I will have a surround concrete porch.

After pouring what I’ve poured im a strong believer now in no wire mesh. I think concrete is to porous and the steel will get wet or stay wet, expand and contract and If you cut in relief cuts or cracking joints, that only gets the water and air that much closer to the steel wire mesh. I’ve never not seen a driveway or sidewalk that didn’t have a crack that wasn’t in the joint where it was supposed to crack! My garage got 4.5 pounds of fiber mesh per yard and my basement got 1.5 pounds per yard. No cracks and no relief cut to force cracks. Edit: I heard him say no fiber mesh and being barefoot and he’s right, but a propane tank and a blow torch takes them out in 2 seconds unless you wait 1-2 years of shoveling snow and they’ll be gone.

Been a very fun project to follow! Thanks for all the updates. ... I heard you talking to the guy about a finish. So are you just doing a brush finish our doing a wood concrete stamp or stamped stone pattern? I would think a broom finish may be a bit rough and hard on the bare feet. I'm sure you both likely have some tough feet, but thinking of future grandkids. A smooth finish would be too slick obviously, but a stamp pattern would look very nice.

Actualy, the steel deck is meant to work as a lower rebar, absorving the traction as the concrete absorves the compression of it. Also the "ribs" create a resistance to shearing forces on the face of both elements that come with the flection of the slab. So, teoricaly, you shouldn't take the deck off, cause the concrete slab isn't dimensioned to work by itself.
