Part 2 of Building our catfish slat trap. In this one we go over tools and materials needed for the build and the cuts we make on our wood to build the trap.

It is a lot of work for sure. Next ones I build I'll have enough lumber to turn out 3-4. It would be way easier pre cutting several out them putting them together. Thanks!!

Thanks for paying attention to your dad's work, your audience can follow these instructions very well as you explain, waiting for part 3. My uncle Clyde in Wichita, KS was a famous catfish man..trout lines limb lines , kept his bluegills for bait in backyard tanks.. I have never seen such a fish trap, intriguing...like a eel trap in northeast rivers it seems. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, they aren't legal in some states. We do limb lines and such baited with bluegills and will eventually get around to those type videos as well..lots of content we can do on our type channel. Part 3 in a few days, thanks for following!!

I've been wanting to do this for myself for some time now. I have a number of different types of fish, crawfad, and turtle traps. I'm going to be getting a few of each made up to have enough to ensure that if bad comes to worse, I'll have the stuff I need to keep my family fed with God's bounty from our local creeks, rivers, ponds, and lakes. 19-21 is my recommendation. You'll have to play with that to fit your likes depending on type wood used and flexibility. Ash you can go 21. Oak you may want 19 or20

My state requires 60” max length and up to 30”x30”, would you recommend building larger where allowed?

I personally would not unless I had a winch in the boat. They get heavy. Biggest id fish is about 16x16

I really enjoy ur videos. I am new to commercial fishing. I just started this year. I have the wire traps. But I haven't had any luck with them. I would like to get a few slat traps but Mississippi have different gaps then urs. Would love any advice u could give me on fish wire traps

Yes I think Mississippi is 15" square or smaller. I know the regulations are online if you Google search it. I've had better luck with wire nets in lakes for channel catfish. If the throat isn't right it will highly effect the catch. I'm not an expert on them, but we do have some wire net videos in our video list on our main KZbin page. In the summer I fish them hanging vertical with the throats down. Use the cheese blocks. I use half one unless I know I'm in a lot of fish, then use a whole one. The tail end will only be 2-5 ft under the surface in 12-16 ft of water. This could depend on the lake. This keeps the fish out of the thermocline. No oxygen down low. Now come November we go to fishing them on bottom.

Can cedar fence pickets be used for the exterior panels? They are inexpensive, readily available, and 3 of them are right at 16" wide.

I've been asked similar questions and I always answer in short with if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I can promise if there was a better way the old timers would have figured it out. Guys have asked about cypress before. Fact is ceder and cypress may catch but they are less dense than oak. That makes Oak way easier to sink. Ceder and cypress is way harder to sink, and I'm speaking from experience. That said, oak also last a long time in water and holds up really well and is very strong. Way less likely to pull staples or nails through the board and fish bust out as well. I've seen these traps come up with several hundred lbs of catfish in them. If you cut cedar or cypress as thin as oak slats, they won't be as strong, and if you soak water in those big ceder pickets, there gonna be so heavy you won't be able to get them in the boat. I believe it would be a waste of money trying. Hope this helps!!

@@godscountryhuntingfishing1638 That makes sense. The question crossed my mind for a proof of concept test for when I go on a weekend scouting/hunting trip. I hoped to make 1 out of pickets and if/when it worked, I would make 2 out of the wood you recommended and be sitting in high cotton.

My experience is I had some of those ceder pickets and used them for catfish boxes for hand grabbing. They worked fine in that application because I wasn't dragging them in the boat. That said it took me forever to sink them and a ton of weight. Thinks we're like trying to sink life jackets🤣🤣🤣. That said we grabbed a good many catfish out of them

19 I believe. It's really not that critical, because your fingers are shorter leaving a bigger opening. I'll do 21 on the catch throats on ones I make in the future

Maybe someone else would comment on this. I've never tried or seen one out of cypress. I have built cypress boxes to hand fish. Blues stayed in them, 😂
