How do you tackle building in a bushfire prone area? And when you find out your BAL Rating is BAL 40 or BAL FZ, what’s the best way to deal with this bushfire attack level as you design a bushfire resistant house.
In this video, Jeff Dau, bushfire consultant from Ember Bushfire Consulting, shares his suggested strategies for building in a bushfire prone area, and responding to your BAL Rating, especially when it’s a BAL 40 or BAL FZ. We talk specifically about bunkers, fire shutters and other strategies for your bushfire safe house.

Hi Amelia. I've recently bought and placed a 40' shipping container in a BAL40 and BALFZ area (didn't realise at the time of the bushfire zoning). The land around my tiny is surrounded by large rocks and boulders with trees and 3 - 5 metre saplings with trunks no wider than 150mm. They are literally long and lanky and look like they'd blow over easily. Also in the mix are many dead trees that are still standing. Surely removing these trees and cutting the grass growing underneath would change the BAL to a lower rating even "managed".

It’s very helpful and in fact comforting as someone comes to terms with this sort of thing, especially never having even heard of the term BAL etc. I’ve just purchased in what I expect to be either BAL40 or even BFZ. Putting Fz on house renovations rather than bal40 is going to force retention of houses with no fire upgrades. There needs to be a more pragmatic assessment to this.
