Your content is unique, you've used your building project as a teachable moment for your subs. Thank you.

The concept is good however I remember you saying, you'll have to walk to the DB and manually/physically turn OFF breakers when you are on Solar. I think the ideal thing (and that is what i would have done) would have been for you to run all your essential loads (lights, fans etc) separately to a DB or consumer unit so you avoid turning OFF breakers manually. By doing this, you are using a breaker as a switch and the continual cycling (numerous ON and OFF) of it will affect the mechanical feature of the breaker and eventually lead to its failure. I guess it is not too late to re modify your wiring i.e if you buy my idea.

Can and inverter solve the fluctuation issue or handle it? Or one has to install an AVR before the inverter setup. Because I was thinking of a setup with inverter and bms with the battery that will use the ECG as the energy source to charge the batteries to run the house even when the ECG cuts out /Sums of happens the batteries will keep the house going. But I don't want it to be setup on a separate change over as you would for a generator. What's is your opinion on this setup? Similar to yours but using 1 phase and batteries to serve as active and backup. Hence the energy constantly runs through the batteries recharging them while they are used.

@kingstal90
@kingstal90 3 жыл бұрын
Thats a simple changeover You cannot understand the full detail without the engineering drawing/schematic and wiring details You don't have to return the switches. for example if the building is on L1, I can simply switch to L3. Obviously there will be a power cut for the small transfer time. You cannot do anything about that be it a manual or automatic system.

any reason why when you were cycling through the phase's you didnt leave the ones not being used in the middle position(green marker on the changeover box)? i noticed you always put them to the far right except the changeover that had phase 1 & 2...which was placed in the middle. Also why did you isolate the solar and generator on separate changeover boxes? Could you have wired(grouped) it the same way you did the phase 1 & 2 changeover?
@kingstal90

Thanks for your comment. You cannot fully understand without studying the electrical drawings/schematic. For example when the system is on L3, the position of the first changeover is irrelevant as the output is isolated. regards

@@kingstal90 I have the same question in mind since you didnot address that in your presentation. Also, couldn't you have just one isolator thr toggles among the 3 phases, with only 1 phase active at a time. Another thing is that, the house is increasingly becoming and electrical plant 😆 and trust me many times are coming when your house hold would be like, "let's wait for engineer to comw deal with his toys, for this is too much for us to handle"😒😃🤣😃🤣
@nanabrimpong3485
@nanabrimpong3485 3 жыл бұрын
@@kingstal90 I noticed you had L1 and L2 on one box and L3 on the other. What I meant by it being foolproof is, what happens when L2 is actively running and the person turns on the switch over for L3 to be active the same time without isolating or turning the switch over for L2 to the off or neutral (middle position not sure what you call it). Because the L2 is already supplying the energy from one phase and you turn on another additional phase with duplicate energy coming into the same supply unit, wouldn't this cause an overload or blow any fuses? Or you have an inbuilt relay that diverts the power in the design that prevents two phases running at the same time?

Sure. Alterations can always be made. However, it depends largely on how much space you have in your electrical room. The system can be installed by simply breaking into the circuit between the TPN incomer and your distribution board.

Nice idea to distribute the 3 phase to your house but the change over system is not safe. For me it is better for the L1 and L2 be installed in one unit box. If power goes OFF on LI and comes ON at L2, there is tendency that someone may forget to put L1 OFF and directly put L2 ON. If later there is power supply again on L1. In that situation both L1 and L2 will be having current and supplying to the same fuse box. What will happen to that fuse box and the entire installations of the house. A change over that is controled by the same switching unit, no 2 or 3 phase will never supply your fuse at the same time to cause damages
@kingstal90
@kingstal90 2 жыл бұрын
You haven't understood it properly. You cannot have L1 and L2 supplying the load at the same time. Its one or the other. It is very safe ! Only one source supplies the load at any time (either L1, L2, L3, generator or solar). Only one source. There is nothing like supplying the fuse box by two phases at the same time in this installation. Thats why its a changeover (manual transfer switch), source 1 or source 2 to the output, not both. Source 1 and 2 of any changeover are mechanically interlocked! - That is how it is manufactured (with safety in mind), so the situation you describe does not exist.

@@kingstal90 since the changer overs are in different switch boxes, there is possibility that someone may forget to switch LI OFF before switching L2 ON. Remember power has gone OFF on L1 but it is still on the ON state and then you put L2 ON. Now both L1 and L2 are on the ON state since the person has forgotten to put L1 OFF. If later power again from your meter to L1, it will flow directly to your fuse box since the person has forgotten to L1 OFF. Now both L1 and L2 are having power and supplying same fuse box. So what do you think is going to happen ? Now power has come back to L1 and the person has forgotten to put it OFF. At the same time L2 was already supplying .

What happens when you mistakenly turn two phases on at the same time?
@kingstal90
@kingstal90 2 жыл бұрын
Its not possible ! Transfer switches are break before make / mechanically interlocked devices. You have two inputs to an MTS .Only one is connected to the output at any one time the inputs are mechanically interlocked Even if you turned two switches at the same time (which is physically challenging - on purpose) as one phase connects the other is disconnected. You may not understand if you are not a detailed electrical designer. The MTS also have safety contactors within them.
@aberba
@aberba 2 жыл бұрын
@@kingstal90 so the switches, you have three of them. Let's say you turn on the first switch on (phase 1) but you forgot to turn it off again before switching to phase two. You end up with both two separate switches turned on. That's what I I'm asking if it'll cause a collision. Unless there's a safety mechanisms. My way of thinking is to split between phase one and two (output being either 1 or 2... let's call that Z1)and then have another to split between either Z1 and phase 3. Will that also work?
@kingstal90
@kingstal90 2 жыл бұрын
@@aberba - As I say, with respect, you are not an electrical designer, so difficult to understand the exact details. It is NOT possible to collide the phases. You don't have to turn off phase 1 after you turn it on. That does not matter. The system is proven and safe and installed even commercially. Phase 1 switch can be on, no issues. If I turn to phase 3 on the second MTS. the phase 1 output is automatically DISCONNECTED !!

I think I know why, but not too sure

Simple answers: 1. I have other full time commitments and do not have the time to do it. 2. There is also a difference between a Consultant, Electrical Design Engineer and an actual Electrician. The two are not necessarily the same. 3. Personal choice and building programme implications

Thanks for your comment Absolutely! - This is engineering and its not cheap. I asked other companies to design for me as a comparison and was quoted 750USD minimum just for the intake room. So mine is much cheaper. There have already been a number of purchases. All the best.
