Hi Freddy, at 24:20 you are setting up for the angled rout in the control cavity. I was waiting for this moment and glad you addressed this somewhat difficult and precarious operation. I was speaking with Bartlett guitars who said he uses a pin router for this process. Your method is the best I’ve seen thus far for this procedure if a pin router is not available. Thank you Freddy!

Acetone injected onto the binding will melt the binding right to the wood. Neat trick. Another luthier on KZbin does it that way. Brilliant.

Hey Freddy, I've been watching these episodes over the course of a couple days now and I am just blown away by how much detail is put into them! A lot of videos you find on here skip out on how it's done and the itty bitty bits and you just don't miss a single part man! I'm going into my final year next year and in Woodwork I chose to build a guitar for my final project and at the moment I'm just looking through and finding some stuff that would help, and this has helped so much!! I may come back here and ask some more intricate questions throughout next year though if i get stuck and if you wouldn't mind helping me out!

Hello FreddysFrets. A newby question: When you drill the pots holes at 22:00, the guitar is laying on its back without any angle?, if so, the pots holes are perpendicular to the guitar back, but then you make the 8,5º inside the pot cavity. How this mismatch is solved?
@FreddysFrets
@FreddysFrets 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jean, that's very observant...good question! It would be an issue if the top had any significant thickness where the pots are, but since the top is only 1/4" thick (approx. I don't have my plans in front of me) then that slight skew is not an issue because of the tolerance between the hole size and the pot shaft size.

Awesome videos, Freddy. Question about the control cavity...you use and 8deg angle when hogging out the control volume from the back, but the videos imply the four holes drilled earlier from the top were done perpendicular to the top. Is this correct? If so, why don't those need to be at that same angle? Finally, how much thickness do you leave when milling out the cavity? Thanks again.

...never mind. I should have read all of the questions/comments. On that note, I'll refrain from asking about the donut in the binding router jig. I'm sure I'll find something new to ask eventually! Thanks again for your videos.

Hey, Freddy (and anyone else who may be able to help)! I've spent hours scouring the web, trying to find a set of templates to do a proper '59 control cavity, and have had no luck. Do you happen to have a file for them that you might be willing to share?

Truly remarkable. One question: what are the ebony donut dimensions and how did you attach it to the router base?
@FreddysFrets

Thanks DK! The donut is around an 1 1/2" in diameter. It's a bit too big. I'm going to make another smaller one. Just glued on with thick CA glue.

Are the bits and bearings a StewMac only type thing or were you able to source directly from a manufacturer? Any chance the template and control drawings are available?

Is there any other particular reason for making these so oversized? I understand leaving some allowance for mistakes, or possibly maybe avoiding the Gibson trademark Gestapo... But I noticed that while you were removing the twill, the 1/4" oversize mark is still on the Maple top. I would've thought you would have brought it closer to the actual; dimensions of the template. Great videos by the way

Hi. Can you tell me why the bottom of the control cavity needs to be canted at 8.5? Is that to compensate for the carve in the top? Great series, as always.
@FreddysFrets

Hi Lee! Yes that's exactly why, to somewhat follow the curve of the top. Thanks for watching!

hi mate, why do you alternate the routing direction? i know that you must route in the direction inverse of the spinning direction (like you did with the sander on previous video fro the neck)

Nice job! Why not have an undersized body template for the binding and rout it before the body carve? I E With a bearing cutter.
@FreddysFrets
@FreddysFrets 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Steven, that's a great observation and in fact it's exactly how I did my first few Les Pauls many years ago. But that will only work where the binding depth doesn't change in the cutaway area. The more modern Les Pauls are made that way, where the binding gets very tall in the cutaway area. With '59 spec, the binding follows the top carve contour in the cutaway. Thanks for the comment!

What size bearing would I need to route the binding channel for my les paul style build?
@FreddysFrets

Depends on the diameter on the cutter. So if the channel is .080" you need a bearing that is .160" smaller in diameter.
