I found that a set of cheap 1979-1992 mustang ls1 headers will clear everything except for right after the collector's. Couple of pie cuts and was good to go.

Dude! Those look great! I wish mine looked that good. Don't feel bad about the time it took to build them...I am positive I was dicking around for over a month to get mine built. It's funny, in the process of fitting/planning mine...I kept thinking I was ending up with too many bends and that I should be able to simplify/straighten them out more for better flow....but kept getting stopped with interference issues. Glad to see that yours snake around quite a bit as well....solidifies in my mind that there was no other way to build them. Tell me, do you plan on wrapping them? Initially I did not want to (I still don't), but it is a lot of engine/exhaust in a very small space, and am kind of thinking I might wind up wrapping them just to hopefully minimize heat issues.
@GrindhousePerformance

I was waiting to hear from you John! Thank you. I'm honestly so happy how these turned out, totally worth all the work that's gone in. I couldn't believe we got everything inboard of the steering shaft and didn't have to split the k member. I was not planning on wrapping them, but I was looking at having them ceramic coated inside and out when I pull everything for paint. Really expensive for how long these headers are, but I'm worried about cooking some of the electronics. The heat extractors on the hood will help, and I love the look of them raw, so I might run them raw until they prove themselves problematic 🤣

Another great video! You inspired me to look into using the Apex Engineering cross member/motor mounts for my LS3 240z swap. I was wondering if you know of any off the shelf headers to use with these mounts instead of making custom ones. Keep up the good work!
@GrindhousePerformance
@GrindhousePerformance 3 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks so much! If you do go with Apex, definitely let Ohm know I brought you there 👍. Unfortunately I dont know any off the shelf options for headers, being honest that's most of the reason we built a set ourselves. The cast manifolds that came with the crate arguably could've been used if you cut the mounting flange off the outlet and adapt some piping to bring the outlet through the tight bits next to the frame rails, I just thought they were really ugly. Block huggers might work, but that pinch area with the frame rails is really the challenge. I know hawk makes ls swap headers for z cars, but I don't THINK they'll work with the apex crossmember.. I think they'll hit the tendon rod supports but I never personally have tried it

Why did you seal off the ends of the exhaust tube as you welded? I saw a hose going to one end. I've just never seen it done before.
@GrindhousePerformance
@GrindhousePerformance Жыл бұрын
It's a process called back purging. Argon is a shielding gas for welding; when you weld the gas protects the weld from contamination. By plugging the tubes and filling them with the shielding gas, it helps prevent there from being contamination on the inside of the weld and tubing. Depending on who you talk to, this is an important step in welding stainless to prevent sugaring or cracks in the welds

I ended up going with the silvermine motors one. It was more than I wanted to spend and unfortunately doesn't appear to be adjustable (it'll still provide more assistance low speed, I was basically hoping for a gain knob to raise or lower the curve), but the solution looks easy enough to integrate into the car and everything was included.

@@GrindhousePerformance man I love this channel tons and tons of useful knowledge. I can’t wait to get caught up on the other videos. Have you thought about re locating the battery and I’m a sucker for A/C but found a rear trunk mounted one. Can’t decide if I’ll go that route being that the trunk is limited space as it is.
@GrindhousePerformance
@GrindhousePerformance 4 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for that! I really hope to see this channel inspire people to get out and build their own project cars. I've been trying to figure out a location for the battery, but am not in love with the options I've come up with. I definitely will not keep it in the stock location, but I am actually thinking it will wind up against the firewall, but inside the passenger compartment. I want to keep the engine bay simple and clean, and I've never been a big fan of the appearance of the big battery box in the rear. I debated sinking the battery into the floor in front of the fuel cell, but I'm not sure I like the battery being within an arguable crumple zone between the fuel cell cage and mustache bar. I'm running a lightweight battery and a small 105a alternator, so I want to have as small a run as possible of all my cables to reduce current draw as much as possible.

@@GrindhousePerformance I’m mostly concerned with the weight ratio I’m throwing a 454 t56 magnum at the 280z and decided to go with a carbon fiber hood fiberglass fender/headlight buckets move the battery to the weird 2 slot hole in the middle lol 😂 minor fab an antigravity battery will fit finally done on my build killing the rust in body that I am keeping and man not enough goes out to body shops those are the real mvps I will not miss the mass amount of time spent sorting the body out
@GrindhousePerformance
@GrindhousePerformance 4 жыл бұрын
- good - body shops are the MVP's, but are few and far between especially when dealing with rust. Most body shops nowadays won't repair rust and its hard not faulting them for it.. the work is super unpleasant and pays the same as simply replacing panels without any of the liability of the repairs longevity. Media blasting helped me tremendously with the rust repair process but I'm also incredibly glad to be past that stage now 🥳

@@GrindhousePerformance I was watching this one on my phone speakers but most of the time I watch it on my TV. I normally watch KZbin videos on volume 10, but when you're talking I have to go to like 15-17 and then go back to 8-10 when the music starts. That's the only gripe I have with your videos, other than that, the content is excellent!

Hey not weird at all man, it would be really difficult to make another set of these. My shell's been modified quite a bit over the years and everything fits super super tightly. These took us a couple weeks to do and I'd hate to charge someone for that much time that likely wouldn't wind up fitting their car anyways
