In todays episode we are trying our hand at carpentry! We are going to try and build a self standing unit that will act as stairs for the second level, a bar and cook top with a sink, and a bathroom. Come along as we work with wood and glue instead of metal and welders!

pro tip- do not glue the countertop down. Glue in corner blocks inside the cabinet then use stainless screws to fasten from underneath into the countertop. Gluing the countertop down will work fine until you have to remove the countertop later for unseen maintenance

couple things. Marine grade plywood is not typically treated to resist mold or mildew. It is created using water proof glue with less voids than traditional wood. So, in this case you didn't need marine grade plywood. Since you are sealing it with resin. Not a big deal. Just way more expensive. One recommendation. Vents. Make sure you add vents. Otherwise it'll trap moisture. Moisture will find a de-lamination or weak spot in the resin.

Architect here. You could get a little extra depth on the treads and make them more comfortable to walk on by adding a one inch nosing to the front edge. That way the rise is maintained but the tread is a little deeper and safer

Hi mate, mega interested watching this build come along, two little bits of advice from a joiner (carpenter) to you. I know you for the sides of the steps. In scotland we call it a stringer i would highly sugest using a thinker bit of wood for strength. Wouldnt use plywood in a house never minr on a boat buddy. It will 100% twist on you. Also cut some 100mm triangle blocks and glue/pin 3 on underside of stair where stringer meets riser. This will stop the stairs from creaking when walking on them. Another idea i had, as i know every inch on a boat is precious... grab yourself some drawers hinges build a few boxes and turn your first 2 stairs into drawers for storage as that space wont be getting used. Hope you see this bud

Fiberglass and resin will act as a structural support if applied correctly. Boats are normally built like a box and rigidly comes from fiberglass and resin applied to it with no structural framing within it. Boats now days are built using foam board instead of marine plywood to save cost and weight with fiberglass applied on it for structure support. Instead, they went with all plywood so it’ll be plenty strong once fiberglass is applied.

You can reduce weight, reduce wind drag, increase air flow, and increase natural light all at once. Use your router and cut 1/8th-1/4 (depending on preference) slots or grooves all along the side of that plywood. This way you can still have privacy, but also get rid of some material. Also, if someone craps, there will be somewhere for the smell to go. You can also make some cool looking patterns that make it seem more expensive than the labor involved, especially since you are glassing over it all.

I would have used screen door hardware for the bathroom door. You may still want to add a piston "closer" so when someone just walks out of the bathroom the door isn't hanging open banging in the wind or if the wind blowing while opening the door it doesn't rip out of someone's hand and whip open stressing the framing and cracking the fiberglass. Super nice build, when I was a kid the bathroom was a 5 gal bucket or just pee over the side, lol.

If it was me, I would put the sink on other side of countertop opposite where you originally planned. This give you more accessibility to the storage space from doorway and to the space behind the toilet. Keeping all plumbings and pipes in that small enclosed space behind the dressing area wall rather than having it in front of the doorway under the countertop. Awesome video build!

Hi guys I’m a finish carpenter and have done lots of boats at a boat yard also (I like working on boats!!) nice work looks great it’s not as easy as it looks to make something like this and make it look good . I think the structure will be plenty strong when it’s fiber glassed the only thing I’d do different is mount the doors internally and set a frame inside as the glassing will build out the walls and you’ll find it had to mount the doors to the face side. Also water will run down and go inside between the two faces. If you mount internally it will be less hasssle for ye. Well done really enjoying the build have fun

As a suggestion add a window for ventilation and natural light on the bathroom. Also for better access to the place under the stairs, cut them aprox 30% to 40% from the total height and add some hinges . For reference see how its made in sailboat engine access under companion way stairs . it's pretty common and very helpful.

Make sure you use the right type of stain for your epoxy. If not, you may run into so issues. We have had good luck with Promise Epoxy. Also, I would use some angle brackets and screw the top down to the frame. That way if you ever need to remove it, it would be easy and less destructive.

I'm curious what you are doing for sheer strength for the second floor. Clearly it is not falling over forward nor backward, but I don't see anything to stop it from folding over left or right. Did you have a structural engineer look at your plans and sign off on not needing sheer bracing? as well as the size and number of bolts that attach the second floor to the deck? You have lots of bolts, however those don't really address sheer. Perhaps I missed that in the plans discussions? I don't want to see a group of people on the top floor go swimming when they didn't plan on it

3/8" radius minimum, or lots of structural putty lol. Aluminum would've been the better way. Wrapping this unit in fiberglass and gelcoating it is going to be awful, especially if they intend on wet sanding and polishing to a mirror finish. If it were me, I'd be fiberglassing the edges/joints to tie in for structural reasons and then resin coating everything with a waxed polyester resin. Aluminum skins on the exterior walls because it's durable. And high quality carpet everywhere else.

Did anyone see Heavy D said that he’s in the middle of building a boat like this one? It’s supposed to have a hot tub and the landing pad for a helicopter. Wonder where he got the idea from

@@paultimmins1 Dude so many boat channels have built big Pontoon boats way before this one. You're tripping. There are even triple-deckers and Jet engine-powered Plontoon yachts that have been built on KZbin. Cabin cruiser Pontoon yachts with hot tubs. This is not a new Idea.

Do this you will thank yourself later if you do. Notch the corner on the left hand corner looking at the toilet at a angle. This will mirror your cut on the bar outside stair wall, give more space for the toilet user and the stairs will open to the right at the top of the stairs inviting you into that space. But this is your build! Easy to couch complain, ya’ll are great!!

aluminum tubing isnt the greatest for impact style use, like climbing and standing on, it starts to flex and crack. steel and wood structure is much more resilient to it. plus, those pontoons are really thick aluminum, so it will still have a nice low center of gravity. plus with the length, it's not going to be making quick turns

Also Put Scales ⚖ under your Pontoon to keep weight Balance. But what the H I know. Love the Idea but just to much weight so far on one Side.
