We have started putting our food forest in on our new property. We are in a marine temperate zone and this food forest garden covers about 1/4 acre.

It's all worth it once you see your fruit trees in full blossom. It's almost magical the show on our nashi trees at moment, really great full. Being in 'Flintstone country' and our property dug over numerous times in the past for gold have deposits of clay silt which compacts too and not much else grew except gorse and blackberry! Once de-rocked we hoed up the clay with a little compost, the first and only time we'll till also. Same like you, not a worm, but after a year they're starting to show up with their friends, cover crops help that organics in the soil/ground. Keep up the good work!

I can't wait to see how it turns out :) It has been so educational watching how you are developing that land. Lots of hard work!

So much hard work haha. I am really appreciating having 2 older kids this time around - 13 and 11 year olds are so much more capable and willing to help than the 7 and 5 that they were when we built our current place! Plus they can baby sit the younger two

Good plan! We have a huge pile of bark mulch too from where they de-barked all the trees

I didn't realize it's controversial to till the ground?

yeah some people are really anti tilling. To be fair I am not a huge fan of it either - it releases a lot of carbon and nitrogen into the air leaving less good soil, and disrupts and disturbs the fungi network - on a side by side comparison no-till soil produces more year on year and it improves as time goes on too.
