A great in-depth green screen key tutorial. This series really shows off the power of Motion tools, although it also reinforces the complexity of the solutions.

Thank you. I think the point I would add is that throughout this series I am using only the most basic operations that almost any compositing application would have (the simplest blend modes, a basic blur, a basic scaling tool (Levels) and that's essentially as complex as it gets), but the one advantage that Motion has is its clone system which (in my view) makes for considerable efficiency in terms of signal routing. But I hope that the key takeaway is that complex compositing does not rely on complex tools but rather the opposite, if you see what I mean.

What an amazing series. I have learned years ago how to do this in node based compositing apps like Fusion but didn’t think it was possible with Motion. One thing I would love to figure out is if something like Fusions clean plate Delta Keyer could be done in Motion. To take a clean plate and then the subject on the background and use it to remove screen imperfections. Something like what Apples new background removal effect does but with more options and the possibility for the camera to move. Assuming we can repeat the motion perfectly which I guess is very unlikely for most.

Thank you. Yes, that was exactly why I wanted to do this tutorial series for Motion, to show that complex processes that you associate with fancy node-based compositors are perfectly possible in a humble layer-based application - even one that most people dismiss as just a basic motion graphics tool. As to your clean plate question, yes, there are things one can do here - but I am not sure I want to reveal them because it means revealing some custom IP. But I will have a think what I might be able to show without going there.

@@SimonUbsdell understood. I’m making my own mobile apps and some FCP tools so I get it. Since I have not been able to figure it out myself I realize it’s a pretty complex process. Like I said it’s pretty rare for many to have a true motion control camera anyway so maybe it’s not a huge deal. Most us wanting to use a clean plate method are pretty much limited to a lock down camera anyway. I typically use Fusion for anything VFX related anyway. As a nerd it’s just been one of those things I would love to figure out someday. I do a lot more live keying in OBS these days and I personally would love to see a keyer where a locked down camera could have a clean plate to help fix screen imperfections. That may be too expensive of a process for a live system anyway.
