You can actually make a pretty cheap one, get a 212cc predator engine and put a belt shaft on it connecting it to a rope that constantly cycles and you just grab onto the rope and get pulled up. No super ideal but it works and costs like 500 ish bucks

Regarding the maul for hammering in wooden stakes: That's actually the proper way to do it. Using a metal sledgehammer will damage the post more often than not, so wooden hammers or metal tubular rams have to be used. A big wooden hammer might actually be a good addition to your tools.
