This "second Calif. Hauler" issue T-500 was my first model kit which my father and I built together. He had me pick a kit and had to get it when I saw it (box art I remember) at Sears around 1973. We finished it in Testors Dk. Blue. It had the split tires which I hated then, but had no replacements. This boxing has small window cab, early interior, no hood hinges. The first issue wrecker as well (blue colored on box art). The T-501 Calif. Hauler had the engine change, hinges added (grille base cut at 45 deg. to clear larger bumper) fender differences, newer interior, larger windows, suspension, etc. which is same for AMT 359 reissues since. You are correct on the newest wrecker reissue. It’s the larger window 1100 series cab with the Cummins engine. I’ve still got some my original issue kits from when I was a kid plus old originals bought throughout the years when I was older. Just heavy trucks kits alone, probably 400-500. My wife is thrilled with my closet, garage and office space.

Hmmm OK I had to go check my kit in my closet, purchased on ebay a few years back. My kit (brown truck picture box ) has almost everything in it but are from the original 1969 issue, gray parts, sleeper, Goodyear tires, sticker, no pamphlet, and satin finish parts.

One big different is the engine. First ones California Hauler kits had Detroit 8V-71 V8 and later kits engine changed to Cummins NTC-350 six cylinder.

Yup, that and the hood hinges added, also interior update. Kit T-501 white with brown stripe.

Rumor has it that round 2 is releasing that second issue little window with the bunk and sunvisor in the near future

Yes first issue didn’t have a sleeper but you could send away for one. Never saw green glass in mine, or two-piece tyres. Later 359s like the Midnight Express had the larger window cab replicating a newer truck, it’s worth comparing the two because they’re completely different. The most recent Round 2 reissue from maybe 7-8 years ago has the earlier small window cab.

Does the kit currently sold by Round2 have 2-piece tires, or regular ones?
