Building Simple Wooden Garden Planters - EASY AND CHEAP

It's usually cheaper to make our own raised beds and garden planters, especially if you want something to fit a specific space, so that's what we're doing again today. Stick with us and see how we built two simple, wooden planters for our front garden to hold our spring bulbs and summer flowers.
We're building them from decking boards and it's super easy but they also look great.

Well done yous two. 👍 Lucky for me my retired hubby, being a bit bored, started making all sorts of fabulous wooden planters from pallets, which are free from local businesses. We take photos of nice designs at the garden centre, that costs a small fortune, then he kinda replicates then. Just remember to make drill holes for drainage and sure they’re on legs, which can be anything from a few inches to 2 or 3 feet 👍. They don’t need lining either. The only costs are the screws and wood-stain treatment!! 😄👍 So, up-cycling is the name of the game and it keeps hubby happy playing in his tiny shed. 😄

Hi from Dublin. Thank you for all the help, inspiration and giggles along the way. My wonderful husband is going to build me a raised bed for my strawberries(he may not be fully aware of this yet😉) and I was wondering how far apart I should space the strawberries. I usually aim for about a foot apart, I say aim cause all too often I cram them in too tight. My strawberries have been awful this year because I moved them to a bed that didn’t get enough sun. So they’ll be going back to a raised bed in the veg plot this year. We were lucky to be able to get used decking boards from a local supplier(they looked almost new. Hubby made 14 raised beds, two planks high on our allotment , also two window boxes. We lined everything with plastic and painted them with fence paint. This was six years ago and they are still going strong. I agree with your choice Eli of deeper pattern out. It all looks great, well done to both of you, a job well done.

I'm nearly finished my greenhouse (the roof is a bit leaky... but otherwise it's ok)... it was meant to be low/no cost but ended up being a bit costly due to the need for structural timber, but it's using recycled windows and pallets so it's not too bad. I love seeing the two of you enjoying each others company... just lovely!

Such a good idea to start new things that are less permanent and move on to permanent ones once you know you like them. No-risk gardening is much wiser than jumping in with massive stuff you end up regretting later. Big thumbs up for this and every video from you so far.

Great job 🙌🏽 We made our raised beds and planters from backs (remnants from planed trees) and deadwood logs collected from forest. For the beds n planters we used the Hügelkultur method, which is a layered system using rotten logs and plant debris. It mimics the cycle of life n death of the forest floor and promotes the growth of mycelium. I’ve a lifetimes supply of the best leaf mulch. Hügelkultur saves a fortune on soil and is great for drainage. Plus plants n veg love it. The backs come from the saw mill and it’s £15 for a pallet load. If it’s not purchased then it just goes to bio-fuel. They have so many uses and look beautiful. We even used them as rustic fence panels and made a outdoor dining table. Of course, for the freebies, it helps living in the middle of a forest, but nae bad for less than twenty quid 🍄

Lol...New subscriber here, so I just saw this...we are huge Arthur Christmas fans and I have to admit when I found your videos, I grabbed the kids and said, "Isn't she just like Briony?!" So, we've been building a new bed and my daughter said we should make a video of our raised bed. I said, " Well, I sound nothing like Briony normally, but we could film an homage wherein we use just "3 bits of sticky tape!" to cover our plants against the cold." Before I ever saw this video, I mean. Wow, that's uncanny! Before Briony's fame, I'm guessing folks were always telling you you look just like Jodie Foster. Thanks for the videos. I've been down with some bug the past few days, but I feel fortunate to have discovered a new funny, informative gardening channel to binge watch as a result. Oh, we tried the pallet planters, too and found the same as you. What really surprised me was that the thing that grew the best was some self-seeded resurrection fern from the oak tree. Other than that, we had a nigh-unkillable perennial spinach that did pretty well in the top one for years (usda zone 9b Florida) but a hard freeze took it last year. I'll wind back the video and get the name of what you're planting to see if it's suitable for our zone. Thanks again!

Very nice. Thank you for showing us how to make these 😍 can you please advise how you will be cleaning the bin? Im confused because one cannot remove all the stuff in the bin? That was me emptying the bin and using everything. It had been full of usable compost I hadn’t needed at the time, hence I had a big pile to fill the planters. So once it was empty, I could give it a hose down to clear all the holes in the bottom and clear the vent. I really struggled with my hotbin for the first few years. Basically you need a lot of material on a regular basis ti keep it hot… you also need a lot more brown than you might think to stop it being wet. I have a whole playlist of composting videos from when I first got it all the way to now

I made some planters/ raised bed for my front garden. I use fence posts and decking for trimming the top. £9 from B&Q in Edinburgh. My only concern with your design is bowing. Perhaps a brace in the middle.

Yeah bowing in the middle is something we see with a lot of the cheaper planters, especially the plastic ones. Not been a problem with this type though, with the heavier sides. 😀

Planters look awesome. Guess what….this is on my list for this fall! I have roses in the front of my house that just don’t do well, behind a short hedge of boxwood. So I plan to make planters just like what you built, but slightly elevated to get the plant above the boxwoods for annual color put front. @@eliandkate no clue dear, nature does not always work out , or does what we want. I have garlic and sage under or between a climing rose and my mini pear tree and they did get better. The pear had rost and the rose was a costly but never very well growing or healthy plant. When I moved here it first looked like I killed it but in the last year its taking off.
