My name is Aimee Blacker, and I am the director and co-founder of Surfing the Spectrum.
Surfing the Spectrum is a volunteer based organisation. The events that run are free for any of the kids or participants to join us on the day.
And for us, to make sure that some of these kids can keep surfing if that's what they want to do, we really want to build a capacity building model where we can partner with local surf schools upskilling them to be able to work with autistic kids when they come and do a session.
It's been brilliant.
So, I've got an OT background so, working with kids with autism and to mix those worlds today has been awesome and sort of letting you know where all this sensory behavioural stuff comes in to surfing.
Once the surf schools are registered, and they’ve done the training, participants can then search their local area on the website and find a school in the area that they can go to that is accredited to do the additional training.
And also, there's some schools out there that also India has registered so schools and they can do ongoing lessons as well.
To build up the skills of people in the local community means that more people in the community can access any sort of support and have the chance to experience the ocean.
