Building South Coast Rail: Ballasting new tracks in Fall River, MA

In this video we see construction crews ballasting brand new tracks near the Fall River, MA Golf Club. This track rebuild is part of South Coast Rail, a project bringing commuter rail back to the cities of Fall River, New Bedford, and Taunton, MA in 2023.

Let's hope this excellent new track enables Mass Coastal to speed up their delivery times!

Speeding up delivery has more to do with how long cars are sitting in the yard before they’re made up into a local train and delivered, so I really hope this infrastructure is designed in a way that enables flexible Mass Coastal movements in coordination with MBTA trains. Can’t hurt, though!

How do the tracks go from nearly covered with ballast, to relatively clean, and simply anchored by the ballast. I don't see that step...

A tamper and regulator run through pushing the ballast off the top of the ties and into place.

Years ago, all local ballast cars were filled out in Westfield, Ma. Don't know about today?

For this specific project the cars got loaded in Freetown, MA

no rail sweeps near the wheels on that car mover. And about the missing dust masks to keep the ballast dust out of their lungs. Been there,,,, cough, cough was stupid to not wear a mask too

Why blast new rail line when there's so many abandoned lines throughout America. Time and costs would be way down putting it to use.

Umm, this IS a used rail line. It’s not a completely new one. It’s being rebuilt with welded rail and signals.
