I tried this with good results. I'd also add the following: After playing the phrase as loud as possible then play it as quiet as possible to build in the full dynamic range and grip requirements 👍🏻👍🏻

Great video. Looking to get back into my Metal playing after years of having not played due to severe illness and this is exactly what I need to start getting my fluidity back. It’s amazing how much skill you can lose when you don’t practise or even just play regularly for a while.

Picking speed ive found is affected by pick width and how you pick in addition to how fast i can think. For example i can pick faster than i can anticipate what to play next. So if im doing alternate outside picking three notes per string the pick direction changes from string to string so i have to pay attention to timing as well as pick angle which affects the sound. Also the pick angles affect if i make mistakes in picking. For me using less force when i pick is the rule as when i play right handed, i can play left too, my picking is like a hammer so i focus on the tone quality and that varies too, say i use a 0.88, 1 or 1.6 mm pick they all sound and play very differently. I use the 1.6 if im trying to increase accuracy at speed and the thinner picks to see if what im doing with the heavier pick is accurate as thinner picks reveal picking inaccuracies easily. My main thing is how does it sound? The muscle stuff only fulfills my desire to practice so long. So mostly i find things that i want to sound nice then work technique stuff around that, always using strict alternate picking for arpeggios as well as scale sequences as ive found its easier to stay in time than economy directional picking. Ive done directional picking and ive found it feels akin to driving a car with no brakes, whereas with alternate picking the pick direction changes when using odd numbers of notes per string, even numbers say 2 or four it doesnt, but the pick direction is always consistent so i can focus on the music rather than the techniques.

will it help increase the speed of playing riffs that are complex due to fast downpicking? (like BMTH - Pray For Plagues) Or it's mostly for a solo parts??
@COTG6666 ай бұрын
Use a stiff pick, hold it so only the tip is barely sticking out, and practice 4 hours a day, every day, for 10 years. Some people will be super shredders, most will be average, and some will end up playing blues.
@stefanfilipov72547 ай бұрын
The biggest problem is consistency. For example I can Nail some of the hardest Petrucci solos after not playing the guitar for some times at all, other times things are just not happening.... The only consistency there is, your body failing your mind again and again :)

One of your best videos so far, Mike! I already knew some of these things before watching this video, but that’s probably because I had the natural tendency to do the correct thing without consciously realizing it until you pointed it out. But I also learned some new things here! Terrible tone, but excellent wisdom as always! …just like me, but with only some of the wisdom. EDIT: Why are you so mean to Greg 😢 he’s just trying his best…

Man i learned directionnal picking, but im worried, my brain can't do alternate anymore, which is okay anyway lol
@Sebastian_Mroczek6 ай бұрын
Had that problem, now I practice both. The reason is you will be playing things that simply don't use directional picking and will force you to alternate. Proof? Just play 2 note per string pentatonic scale, or "the one and only 1234 spider exercise" 😃
