Well tuned 3D printers can make some extremely accurate parts, and in cases with large surface areas the layer lines can help reduce friction.

I remember around 2001 people online were theorizing what is the largest possible Rubik's cube that could be built without using magnets. (The avoidance of magnets was to get around the fact that magnets could help hold larger cubes together so things like corner pieces wouldn't have to be physically attached to the core; this was before magnets were used for speed.) I knew an architecture undergrad who made a detailed diagram of, iirc, a 17x17x17 cube that could (at the time) theoretically be built, though it would require somebody to have the means to manufacture all of those parts. Back then people had to consider things like the limitations of injection molding, or that no company would sell a cube heavy enough to be too unwieldy to turn. It's wild how 3d printing has completely transformed how we approach building something like this. I love this age of "I made a thing because I could" engineering.

Calculating the number of combinations for a 37x37 Rubik's cube involves a complex mathematical process due to the vast number of possible states each piece of the cube can be in. The combinatorial explosion makes it a significantly larger problem than the more familiar 3x3 Rubik's cube. To simplify the explanation, let’s break it down into the types of pieces on the cube and their respective permutations and orientations: 1. **Centers**: For a 37x37 cube, the center pieces are those that do not move relative to each other. The center piece configurations are generally fixed, and for a 37x37 cube, each face has a large number of center pieces but they are identical and do not rotate, so they do not add to the complexity in terms of orientation. 2. **Edges**: The 37x37 cube has many edge pieces. Each face will have \( (37 - 2) \times 4 = 140 \) edges, considering the pieces on the edges of the face minus the corners. Thus, there are a total of \( 140 \times 6 = 840 \) edges, but since each edge is shared between two faces, we divide by 2 to get 420 unique edge pieces. Each edge piece has 2 possible orientations. 3. **Corners**: Each corner piece can be placed in one of 8 positions and can be oriented in 3 possible ways. However, since this is a higher-order cube, the edge pieces will be more numerous. The formula for calculating the total number of combinations is significantly more complex due to these high-order cubes, but an approximate formula can be derived from the factorial function that accounts for the permutation of the edge and corner pieces and their orientations. The formula for the combination count in such a cube involves: \[ N = \frac{(number\,of\,edge\,pieces)! \times (number\,of\,corner\,pieces)! \times (number\,of\,center\,pieces)!}{symmetry\,factor} \] However, exact combinatorial calculations also require accounting for orientation restrictions (e.g., only an even number of edge flips is allowed) and the indistinguishability of similar center pieces on such a large cube. Given the enormity of the number, it is easier to use an estimate based on smaller-order cubes. The total number of possible configurations for a 3x3 cube is about \( 4.3 \times 10^{19} \), and this number grows exponentially with the order of the cube. For large cubes like a 37x37, the number of combinations is truly astronomical, often written in terms of powers of 10. To provide a rough estimate without diving into detailed mathematical combinatorics, the number of combinations for a 37x37 Rubik's cube is far greater than \( 10^{1000} \), reflecting the immense complexity of such a puzzle. In conclusion, while the exact number of combinations is extremely difficult to calculate precisely due to the enormous size and combinatorial complexity, it is safe to say that the number is beyond human comprehension and far exceeds typical large numbers used in everyday contexts.
