This is part 1 in a series of videos showing how we built the Affordaplane ultralight (A-Plane) from plans. In this part, we show how to create the workspace needed for drafting the large, actual size sketch of the fuselage frame.

The wood ibeams is a great idea. They are very stiff and straight. I would put some cross bracing or blocking to help prevent twisting

Hi Jon. The Affordaplane is what I've been waiting for my entire life. I've got the plans from Dave and will be building as soon as I have a place to make the building table. I have looked at the whole series of video presentations up to number 18. They have been an inspration to get started. I hope to be in contact again soon with some progress news. There are one or two small modifications I would like to try out, and would like discuss them with you if I may. Thank you for a most informative series of video's so far, and I look forward to viewing the rest of them soon. Thanks again.

I built my table much the same way. I could not get the I-joists last July during the covid craze and could not get 16’ glulams, but they had 28’ so then cut them in half and the 14’ supports the two sheets of plywood pretty well. I used hardwood plywood to get a better work surface. The saw horses are quick, but I wanted storage under my bench for the large parts so I made a frame of wood with two shelves. Has worked great thus far. Other than the lack of storage shelves, your design is certainly quick and effective.

What a really great idea for the workbench. It's really difficult to understand just how tough it is to get a long table completely straight - until you try to build one for yourself. Nice tip!

Its time to move from RC aircraft to ultralight. I really enjoy building and am quite interested in the AffordAPlane. I could not find you in Paetron - so, do you have a recommended list of necessary and optional builder tools? Example, I don't have a 'band saw'. A generic description would be helpful. Does the USB drive include some of that detail? Thanks in advance. I've asked my son if he's interested and he's ready to go.

I'm late to the party. I get that. Two questions about the work table - What depth of floor joists did you use, and what is the maximum vertical deflection of the surface have you noticed? I built a torque-box table a couple of years ago that was incredibly stiff and flat, but not easily extendable to 16 feet at this point.

I bought a set of plans from another designer. He said copying or drawing on a piece of paper is unstable due to temp and humidity. They say paint your MDF or plywood white and draw directly on to the table. When finished with that section paint white again and repeat. That is how I did a Neuport. Is kraft paper easy to get the wrinkles or of a temp/humidity stable? In A&P school we usually had a +/- 1/16" tolerance for sheet metal. I'm not criticizing, just curious.

Absolutely. Many will just build an “EAA table” or two without investigating very much. I looked at them and knewI would never get a flat table using dimensional lumber with today’s quality. Using engineering lumber is much smarter and not everyone knows that.
