@ 20:50 - The hollowed out part is the other half of the .30 cal mount and stowage. You spin the .30 cal 180, remove a pin and swing the.30 cal down into it’s stowage, typically for “transport”, rolling down an interstate or on a flatbed on rails.

Its protective stowage for the 30 cal. The vertical arm folds towards the rear, tip the barrel down and into the cover. Extra weight and work, but someone thought it was helpful.
@bloodangelsassaultracoon3067
@bloodangelsassaultracoon3067 4 жыл бұрын
It was helpful because lots and lots of this tanks was transported by ships as a land-lease to USSR and as reinforcement to US army. And to minimize the amount of parts sticking out and potentially be damaged or damaging to people this protective case was made. Though I think the primary idea behind this part was to protect .30cal hmg from rain and mud while not in battle

@@LokkieF would have meant a major design change, which would have needed approval up and down the chain of several large army bureaucracies. Had they done that the M24 would have been in production before the change was approved! This way it was as easy as slapping on some sheet metal and be done with it. Not sure where it was done, but wouldn't be surprised if they were shipped from the factory without it fitted but with the precut pieces of steel in the tank, and then had it bolted or welded on in an army depot, making it at least on paper a "field modification" and therefore much easier to get approval for. Yes, the US Army bureaucracy was as bad during WW2 as it is today.

The side mounted machine gun was supposed to be use by either the tank commander or a foot soldier could climb up and use it. The gun itself was folded back and stored in the side bin to prevent damage when going through wooded areas and enemy light arms fire.

I just got this kit and I am very happy with it so far. One thing I would recommend is that if you buy it, to at least cut out all the parts for the tracks first. This will cut down the number of sprues in the box to something a bit more manageable and you may actually be able to close it. There is a lot of plastic in this kit but a bit of organization will help make it a much less overwhelming build.

The shield you ask about was to protect the AA.30 cal from ground fire when stowed. The M5, simply had a pole mount for the MG. No protection for anybody shooting the weapon. The AA mount was designed for use from inside the tank.

Thank you Andy... it's great that you've been churning out all this content recently.... I finally have something great to watch since I've waiting for the notifications saying that you have released a video. Btw, that plate on the side of the turret is for spaced armour, to protect the tank from recoiless anti tank weapons (like a bazooka or panzerfaust) because these weapons work by explodign on impact. The shield would pre detonate the panzerfaust's shot before it hit the tank
@fixitup4203
@fixitup4203 4 жыл бұрын
It seems that the piece in question on the right side of the turret, under the 30 cal. machine gun is a protective housing for the gun. I believe that the mount unhinges and allows the entire gun and its mount to drop into the protective armor and it's open design allows for quick access. There may be some sort of spring assist allowing the operator to quickly pull the (heavy) gun up into action and perhaps, automatically locking into position by a spring latch on the mount.

@davidnickels3325
@davidnickels3325 3 жыл бұрын
On this particular kit you can't really make it moveable. Classy molded the main horizontal suspension arms together. On the real tank. they operate independently and one or the other can go up and down under spring tension. But, in the kit, they can just pivot back and forth like a see saw, and the range of motion is minimal at best. Just about 2mm.

Found the same, way more seams than I’ve found with other 1/35 Takom kits. Quality control, like the 2 halves weren’t joined properly, but everything has seams. Also suprised by the appearance of so much flash, since it’s a new release. Some sprue’s are good and some bad, hit and miss. Fit issues too. Much slower build.

Nice model!!! Given that you probably rushed the build in order to have the video done, you still managed to produce a nice result. This is obviously not a "weekend" project... and it has a ton of improvement and super detailing potential. Very good insight on what the kit has to offer. Good Job! Definetely gonna get one. I really hope they might do an M8 based on this kit as well
@davidnickels3325
@davidnickels3325 3 жыл бұрын
I am building the kit now. It is basically accurate but most of the detail is really soft and not very well rendered. Much of it is underscale, too, like all of the welds. Things like bolt heads that should be hex shaped are just round gumdrops and Classy has mis interpreted some raised bolts and made them countersunk, and some internal screws are represented as external bolts. Ovarall it has the detail of a 1980s Italeri kit just blown up to 1/16. For example, the Browning .30s are just one piece each and you have to drill out all of the holes in the cooling jackets !
@stevenniklaus5810
@stevenniklaus5810 3 жыл бұрын
@@davidnickels3325 Ohhhh my... I will have to think twice if I still wanna commit to building one. Will follow your build with great interest!
