Building the Cyclops (aka Poke Ball) Omnidirectional Speaker - by SoundBlab

I started this project because I have never built or listened to an omnidirectional speaker. I wanted a unique design and look, but still have it be practical and functional to perform the task it was called for. It turned out great and I am very happy with the quality of the sound and the unique experience an omni speaker can provide.

Turned out amazing! My only one thing I wish you had done differently is the screws you chose to fasten the 3" speaker on top. Everything else is perfect!

Thanks. The screws is what I had at hand, and they can be changed easily. As a matter of fact I have changed them already.

I can see a possible L/C/R configuration of those in listening to an L/C/R recording, but then an easier format to find would be a 5 or 7 channel surround.

You do the same thing I do when using a screw gun to install speaker drivers. I've seen more then a few people poke holes in their brand new speakers when the drive bit accidentally slips off the screw. Oppsy. This build looks interesting. They turned out nice.

Love the idea, but it seems you've lost a lot of the mid to high frequencies when listening in the normal seating position. Is that the case or is it just the audio quality of the video? I was thinking about designing a speaker with normal front facing midrange and tweeter and placing a full range speaker facing up for increased soundstage and dispersion, almost like atmos. Still fleshing my design out. Thanks for sharing.

Ehrmahgerd, I bend pipe for a living (HVAC, copper for A/C) and I understand why you do it (sand in the aluminum) but man, who would notice. I guess that's the difference between rough work and enthusiast passion.

I love the disign. great sound and very nice to display. only one thing, Why didn`t you use Flathead screws. These are "sunken" screws we named it in the Netherlands. anyway you did a marvelous job. I admire your craftsmanship.

Very nice work indeed! They look awesome and though it's hard to tell how they actually sound from this clip they seem to pack a really nice punch for their size. Critics will be critics but these would more than enough for the average Joe who wants a pair of good quality speakers also customizable to the palette of their own livingroom, yet delivers great sound. Plus it looks a nice and straight forward build for anyone whose fingers arn't all bananas and melons :-) They appeal to me so much I wanna build a pair myself for the thrill of it :-)
