Great build. A silk purse from a sow's ear! I'm sure the Sea Fury I built in 1/48 was from the same company and equally inaccurate. The nose wheel was a double outer ridged job which was to reduce the possibility of the shimmy effect on the castoring wheel (like a recalcitrant shopping trolley!), though the kit representation of this was as bad as everything else! I remember pointing out the tyre on the Vampire at Hendon museum to my late Uncle who was an ex Canberra Nav, he then explained why it was designed that way. I've got a feeling the tail wheel on the Mossie was similar!!!. Love your videos, keep up the great work.

No. Swiss markings. Boxart has the dornier Do-335

I love the box art - the Vampire chasing a Dornier Do335 'Pfeil'. I have a nasty feeling that, although a jet, the Vampire would have had a job catching the superbly engineered 'Pfeil' (Arrow).

The box cover is a " What if" picture. Almost like the Gloster Meteor chasing an Me 262. Interesting plane however.

It may or may not be of interest to you, SG, but when I was a wee lad I used to bike over to RAF Swinderby and watch the Vampires take off and land. Now that was a while ago! :) :)

True. The centre wasn't concave, like the kit's, though. Suggestion: cut it thru the middle, sand the wheel sides down to a thin ridge, then reassemble with a very short slice of styrene rod or tube. And make sure it looks excellent.

Bad kit, good build. I built the 1:72 Airfix Vampire kit (in its Swedish J28 form) in the 1970s. It was one of the few times I attempted to paint effects, but I think I went a little overboard: it looked like someone had fired a flamethrower at the underside of the tailplane.

Turning a piece of crap into a good looking model shows the real skill of the maker. Like you, I am not into jets but a good quality version of this might be OK as my Dad used to be part of the ground crew for these at No. 202 Advanced Flying School at RAF Valley, Anglesey in the 50's....definitely no Dornier Do335 'Pfeil' about then though! lol

Hi, I searched for, and found this clip as I had the exact same kit given to me as a freebie a few weeks ago. I pondered lobbing it straight in the bin, but given I wanted a simple kit with which to try out foiling, I decided to bite the bullet. Interestingly, mine doesn't seem to have any of the panel line mismatch that yours evidently did! So at the moment, misplaced though it may prove to be, I remain optimistic! :-)

Looked tricky ..... can I ask a question is worth making old matchbox and Airfix plane kits with raised panel lines..... hope you don’t mind me asking as I’m primarily a Railway modeller looking to try different builds.... regards Fred

I've never made a model with raised panel lines (I think I have one somewhere), but for a test build I'd say go for it.

Typical early to mid-1990's. Some of the Hobbycraft kids from that time were awful. Some of those were new-made awful, some were reissued old mould awful. The Bf 109s in 1:48 were great.

As far as I'm aware, it didn't come into service until 1946.

I was fortunate to have owned a DH 100 Mk6, former Swiss J1102 for 13 years back in the '90s. I kept it at Tom Riliey's museum in Kissimmee, Fl. You wouldn't the number of people who would come through the museum and think that they were looking at a P 38. It was good for a quiet laugh.

Looking more closely at this, it seems to be one of their worst kit offerings. The shape is even all wrong, wing has negative dihedral, wing tanks are wrong, just aweful. You did a great job with it considering...

Given that it's clearly meant for entry level modellers, the quality is appalling. Beginners aren't necessarily going to have the skills or knowledge to make it look half decent.
