In this 31st amateur model build, we’ll take on the Eagle transporter model from the TV Series Space: 1999. We construct, paint, and weather one of the best Science Fiction spacecraft designs of all time from a set manufactured by MPC -- kit number MPC825.
2022 was a personally devastating year for me with the loss of Mooch and then Sophie soon after. I probably shouldn’t have attempted a model build as I lacked the focus necessary to do the best job that I could.

It's a crying shame that models of this sophistication are all but phased out in so called modern movies. They just give you an aesthetics and a feel that can't be reproduced by CGI. You did the Eagle proud. I love it.

@@MaxAfterburner It was dubbed. Subtitles were very rare even at that time (and before, and after). When I was a kid (60s) all TV-series ("Flipper", "Lassie", "Bonanza", .... you name it) were dubbed. Often they even had a german version of the title song. In fact I can't remember any series which had subtitles.

It is for it's original purpose. But it gets used unrealistically in the series, for planetary landings, when it is clearly designed for vacuum use. But yes, I could see a real version of this being built for transporting personnel and equipment around the lunar or other airless moons surfaces and into lunar orbit. If we're stuck with chemical fuels, the tanks would need to be bigger.

There was a joke in the SF fan community that Moonbase Alpha's automated Eagle factory had got stuck in the "on" position after the explosion that threw the Moon out of Earth's orbit and the people in the Moonbase had to crash at least one Eagle each episode to prevent them from being overrun with new-build Eagles.

The series ran on WGN-TV 9 in first-run, Sundays at 5.30p. After the series became a hit, WGN started showing repeats Tuesdays at 7p. Then during the summer of 1976, the series' repeats were moved to Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7p. Second season, the show was back on Sundays at 5.30p and left the schedule after "The Dorcons." In the fall of 77, reruns Sundays at 5.30p picked back up through spring 78. Then, it was gone again. In July 79, calls to the station got 4 weeks of repeats Sundays at 10a to help promote Space:1999 Con 79 in Pittsburgh. WGN burned off the broadcast rights putting the show on in various overnight time slots as filler through 1981. The series was picked up by WGBO-TV 66 and shown M-F at 5p during the summer of 88. 66 pulled it then returned it to the air in 1991-92 7 days a week at 4a, sometimes another episode was doubled up at 5a. Later that year, it ran M-F exclusively on The Sci-Fi Channel.

Hi trynda1701, thanks for Sophie. Some call this particular kit a 1/48 scale model, but as I've mentioned in another comment, I accepted the 102 foot "real life" specification as a basis for my work. So, my scale would be an oddball of 1/55.6 🧐

The show's model builders originally scratch built everything, right up until commercial models of the Eagle began to appear, and then they would go to their nearest hobby shop and buy Eagle kits to assemble to use on the show! An interesting circular process.
@largol33t1
@largol33t1 Жыл бұрын
Probably saved money too. First they don't have to build every little part. Second, if they didn't like how the model came out, they could easily scratch build parts to fix whatever didn't match the original, which saves more money since they already had a model to modify.
@jimsmalleimb7709
@jimsmalleimb7709 Жыл бұрын
Actually, no. None of the Airfix/MPC kits made at the time were used on the show at all. At least not built into Eagles, as the old kits were not accurate enough to film. But some parts from the kit were used as dressing on other models.
@berendharmsen
@berendharmsen Жыл бұрын
@@jimsmalleimb7709 Indeed. My favourite (over) use of the Airfix Eagle kit was in the Italian would-be Star Wars movie Starcrash. You can find it on KZbin. The opening shot of the obligatory 'big ship' sees the model detailed with every single Airfix Eagle part on the sprues: engine bells, the landing strut parts, even the cockpit is prominently seen. Another kit they really loved apparently was the Revell Saturn V rocket. Look it up, it's fun to see how many bits you recognise! But indeed, no Eagle Airfix models were abused in the production of Space:1999 🙂

Well SF kits were used as greeblies on many ship models made post-Star Wars until CGI kicked in and kinda ruined the art of scratchbuilding. They did use toy blasters as the basis for actual blasters in the Star Wars prequels. Nowadays it's 3D printing, which opens up a whole new world of possibility.

I would like to get back into kit building after nearly 40 years - well I've bought over 2 dozen kits recently so it's more like better get into at this point - but stressing over too much to actually open a box! I know I need to build skills, practice and have more faith in myself, but I don't want to waste money and ruin kits to get to a good level. Tools are the killer cost, but so are some kits I really want and no way I want to mess up a $200 plus kit. Trivia Facts of the Day -- alternate casting choices for the original Star Trek (1960s TV series) -- Martin Landau, Commander Koenig in Space: 1999 -- was considered for the role of Mr. Spock had Leonard Nimoy refused to do the series OR Nimoy left after contract renegotiations to raise his salary following Season 1 of Star Trek. Landau was one of the original leads for another Desilu-produced TV series, the original Mission Impossible (1966-1973) which was far more successful and more popular in its original run than Star Trek (1966-1969). Mission Impossible continued into the early 1970s with cast changes. Lloyd Bridges -- was considered for the role of the Enterprise's captain. His character might have been named Robert April or Christopher Pike. Roddenberry seemed to change the captain's name with recasting of the potential series lead. The captain was called Christopher Pike as played by Jeffrey Hunter in the first TV pilot and later James T. Kirk as portrayed by William Shatner in the second TV pilot and production series. Bridges was an original choice of Gene Roddenberry but Bridges was not crazy about doing a science fiction TV series because of the crappy quality of most science fiction TV series to that point. Nearly 15 years later, Bridges played the role of Commander Cain, commanding officer of the Battlestar Pegasus, on a 2-episode arc that was arguably the most popular story of the original Battlestar Galactica series (1978-1979).

@AvengerII
@AvengerII Жыл бұрын
@@MaxAfterburner Bridges and Landau were big stars on TV in the 1960s. This was WAY before my time! I read about them and saw their work after the peak of their careers. Right now, more people probably remember Landau from Space: 1999 and the movie Ed Wood than they do MI. Lloyd Bridges is probably better-remembered by Gen X onward from his wacky role in the comedy, "Airplane!" Mission Impossible arguably made Landau's career and kept him employed for quite a while. MI was more popular than Star Trek was with the mainstream during its first run; it ran 4 years longer than Star Trek which is a respectable run by any reasonable standard. The funny thing is I've hardly seen ANY bit of MI during my lifetime! LOL I'm more of an original "Get Smart" fan! Bridges was popular through the series "Sea Hunt" (1958-1961) which ran in syndication I believe. Bridges' son, Jeff Bridges, has done a LOT more science fiction than Lloyd Bridges managed during his lifetime. Jeff was the lead actor in TRON (but not the title character!), Tron: Legacy, and Starman. (He also appeared in the 1976 King Kong remake but I don't hold that against him!) I was not a huge fan of Tron: Legacy but the other 2 films were excellent. I think either Landau or Lloyd Bridges could have been excellent on Star Trek but it would have been a VERY different series. I'm glad we ended up with the cast we got not that I have issues with Landau or Bridges as actors; I've enjoyed them in different projects.

I wanted to ask a question and see if anyone had more knowledge than I do about this... I've noticed vendors selling things like keytags made from reclaimed aircraft skin/fuselages like F-14, F-4, 747, A380, etc. I noticed the other day on an auction site that a vendor called JetAeroStream parts claimed to be selling fanblade pieces from multiple plane types -- F-14, F-14, F-16, F-4, etc. These were F110 and F100 fanblades allegedly made of Titanium. I checked against a photo of an F110 just to see what the fanblade surface looks like and honestly it DOES look the parts he claims are from scrapped engines are indeed Titanium alloy. I think it's possible these are what he says these are but I find it easier to believe the keychains are from scrapped airframes than the fanblades are from decommissioned F100 and F110 engines (as well J79 and whatever manufacturer made the civilian airliner engines). I know I'm not spending $120 on an F-14 keychain just because Top Gun 2 was released this past year (!) but the fanblade display is tempting... Does anyone else find this memorabilia a bit on the sketchy side, or does someone else out there OWN things like decomm'd, deactivated F-4 ejection seats and F-4 tires?!? 😂 To me, this seems like weird stuff to sell but still not as bizarre as someone selling underwear alleged to belong to Marilyn Monroe!

Hey Max, I’m Fred. I’m 16 years old and I’ve been watching your videos and I have to ask, did you ever use a paintbrush instead of an airbrush? And where did you get the F-111C? I ordered mine on Amazon for $79.99.
@MaxAfterburner
@MaxAfterburner Жыл бұрын
Hi Fred, I used paint brushes for a very long time when I was younger. However, when I tried an airbrush for the first time I was completely sold on it. It is amazing and it helps make up for my inadequacies as an "artist". I got my F-111C model kit at about the end of 2020 from Scale Hobbyist and they're currently selling it for about $66. I recommend avoiding Amazon for model kits and supplies as they are noticeably more expensive than online model sites. I only use them in extreme desperation for this type of stuff. I suggest looking to sites such as Scale Hobbyist, Andy's HHQ, and Hobbylinc. There are many more, but these are my primary "go-to's". If you're looking for kits from the past, checkout Old Model Kits run by a very nice husband and wife team. Great people! I'm so glad you have an interest in plastic model kits and I wish you great fun in the hobby. Please don't hesitate to ask questions of anyone. It's a very supportive community of people!

It is quite apt that at the end you used music also used in 2001: A Space Odyssey as the Eagle was an evolution of the Moon Bus that Brian Johnson worked on for that film. Attempting to replicate any specific version of this ship is a fool's errand - like most special effects studios the SFX team at Bray were more interested in getting the shots required for the episodes than continuity of appearance. As/when a model got damaged it was repaired, repainted and re-trimmed as required given the time and budget constraints. Each SFX shot only lasted a few seconds and was never designed for a world of 4K BluRay and viewers being able to jog/shuttle to closely examine every detail! IIRC the decals on the original models were "Letraset" architectural symbols used by draughtsmen. I have this kit in my stash (along with both sets of turned metal engine bells and a pod interior) waiting for me to take the plunge and tackle it! I really like the way you have used the weathering powders to get the faded panel details - I'll have a go at that on mine 👍😁

Hi Spacedock8, indeed on all your points. I was going to describe in the video how one Eagle with a rescue pod kept changing appearance from shot to shot as it travelled from the launch pad to its intercept point, but I needed to keep the overall video shorter and I omitted that. An interesting fact for some. Gerry Anderson needed to have this project under way rapidly because UFO was canned. Supposedly due to "Low Ratings" however in the 2 year time span that UFO ran for its storyline started to get just a little close to the truth for some of the financiers comfort. Thus it was canned. So He had to go with a new show, I've always liked the design and the concept of the eagle transports. Although to be in a real working situation they would need to be modified considerably.
