The finished model has a wonderfully real, solid feel to it. The piecewise tracks contribute a lot (it was always rubber/plastic in my time, which took away a lot of the enjoyment), but so does the paint and weathering. I sort of flinch when I hear things like "ok, now I'm going to spend an hour putting millions of .05 mm^2 dots on everything, and then I'll cover that with a wash", but it does help the eye accept the suggestion of realness of the build. The blue-tinged grey is probably completely wrong, but it does suggest a Panzer under the unforgiving Russian sky. Very good!

I think the addition of blue to panzer grey worked really well, the slightly lighter colour really helped to show the weathering off to its full potential. Excellent look to the finished build. I too am interested as to why the upper section was made of multiple pieces. I have always liked the balance in the Tamiya kits of small, medium and large pieces. A great looking build as always,, clearly showing the techniques used to get there. Thank you.

The multiple piece upper hull is needed so they can mold raised detail on the sides. If it was all one piece the sides and front would need to be smooth in order to get the part out of the molds. That would require multiple small detail pieces to get the detail and would still prevent any rivets or screw heads that would trap the part in the mold half. It also allows the sides and front to be perpendicular to the hull top, molding them together would require "draft", or an angle between the top and sides so the part would release. Look at any square box in a kit, the sides always angle out a little for mold release.

Seems a nice kit, in fact all Tamiya’s more recent kits all seem to be excellent. I recently built their T-55 and have just primed the Korean War M4a3e8 and have no complaints about either of them, very little sanding needed and almost no filling at all. Even things I usually replace with wire like the handles, grab bars and light guards are OK to use. The only after-market parts I used on either were on the T-55 - thin lead wire for the external fuel lines, which Tamiya don’t represent at all, and Friul tracks to get the “heavy tracks sagging a lot” look. I generally prefer to paint the lower hull sides, wheels, tracks and bogeys etc. before assembly while I can still get at them easily, so I’m not a big fan of tracks assembled from styrene parts which usually have to be fitted before paint. I’ve also come across a few kits with individual styrene track links, and not even an assembly jig provided, which made assembling the tracks a much bigger and more difficult job than the entire rest of the kit. As for the blue, sorry Andy but it doesn’t quite work for me. Before the weathering stage I found myself thinking of SS Panzer Division “Das Leuchten Im Dunkelm“, which was transformed into piles of smoking scrap metal during its first operation, an ill-advised night attack across open ground against massed Red Army AT batteries. Though to be fair weathering has toned down the day-glo effect a lot. I might be won over to it if it was a lot less saturated and the whole tank was somewhat darker in tone. Your weathering job, on the other hand, is excellent. That tank really looks like it’s been wading through deep Russian spring thaw mud.
