Good teaching video for those of us who haven't built since the original Grasshopper, some 30 years ago. If you add the high performance Sport Tuned motor (540) it mounts directly to the gear box -- don't add the "motor plate" that is normally mounted to the motor supplied with the kit (actually, you can't add plate; it doesn't fit over the pinion gear). This confused me for a moment until I realized how the larger motor mounted.

Hi Stanley! Yeah, the Sport Tuned 540 will make this one fly. Got another Hopper with a 540 Sport Tuned and it's a lot of fun. Thanks for the tip.

Very well done, I enjoyed this video very much. I am glad that you did the side-by-side comparisons with the original grasshopper, keep up the great work.

Thank you very much for the feedback and encouragement. Greatly appreciated! Yeah, thought the build would prove a little more interesting if compared with other "hoppers", also for me while building it :-)

I had the Super G Grasshopper II back in the 90's. Came with better shocks, a 540 motor, better wheels/tires etc.. Loved it 👍
@NordicRC7 жыл бұрын
Nice! I can understand why. The Super G is excellent! Came with all the essential upgrades. Basically it would perform like a Super Hornet. The stock rear shocks on the standard edition is the worst I've tried yet :-) Thanks for watching and commenting. Appreciate it.

Very enjoyable video and I forget the little differences with the G2 bearbox.

Thank you very much! Yeah it was fun to discover. I thought it would use a Grasshopper Gear Box but apparently the only Hopper that uses that one is the Grasshopper :-)

I also hardly use the caution stickers. I assume it is for offering safety notice more, but it doesn't seem to go well with the legendary hopper.:) Oh, haven't known the rear axles are a bit different from each other's.
@NordicRC7 жыл бұрын
gpgp01 Yeah, I think they are appropriate if young people are running the car that doesn't know how hot a motor can get on a hot summer's day. If my son some day will start running my cars I will out them on :-) Yeah the axles are indeed different. Think the only reason is that the wheel adapters and the wheels are different. No standard 12 mm hex in those days :-)
@schuttrostig5729 Жыл бұрын
I enjoy the caution stickers, they are hilarious. But then i also cut out the kit number that is on the decor sheet and add it somewhere on the car.

Great build! Absolutely enjoyed it. I did not have enough patience to film the build :D You just need the manual to check if everything is 100%. I will bash mine this weekend with the 540 motor on 3S :D
@NordicRC7 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! It's going to be my longest build video, but well well :-) Looking very much forward seeing it run with a 540 and 3S! Good thing you build it fast, so I can enjoy seeing it run while I build mine. Helps with my patience :-) Looking forward running mine too

I want to replace the bushings in the gearbox of my GH2, but the piece that sits on the end of the axle and holds the wheel in place won't come off meaning I can neither change the axle nor the bushings...
@NordicRC7 жыл бұрын
The wheel adaptor? I am sure it will come off if you wriggle it a little. Hope you succeed. But if you're running the GH2 with the stock 380 (as I will be doing) it doesn't make too much of a difference if it's bushings or ball bearings.
@Temazine7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's a C7 extension, I found out that much... It won't come off though, no matter how hard I try. I just hope nobody glued it in place because I got the car used (1988 original)... Right now I'm trying to fit a Sports Tuned 540 in there but I need to wait until my next paycheck to buy the right pinion for it. Right now, running it with bushings is alright as the only thing I've replaced up until now is the msc with an esc, but when I add the new motor, I'd like to have bearings in there, and wheels with a real tread as the pin spike ones I'm using right now aren't that good for driving on loose ground like sand. I was suprised how much of an improvement I got going from the stock Tamiya msc to a cheap 45A esc! My runtimes have gone from approx. 10 minutes to over 30, and that's with an ages old 1500mAh nicad battery! I really love the old tamiya models, they're easy to customize and still a lot of fun. I'm planning on buying a hotshot or FAV next month (can't decide which one yet :D)
@NordicRC7 жыл бұрын
Uhhh, I hope they didn't glue it too. Strange it won't come off. Hope you solve the mystery. Yeah, if you want to install that sport tuned it will be a good idea to install the bearings. With an ESC, ball bearings and a sport tuned you will still get good run times, even though you've switched to a 540. It's a hard choice, Hotshot or FAV. Both are iconic and beautiful :-)
@Temazine7 жыл бұрын
I agree ^^ I like the FAV a bit more though :D

Nice! what color you going to paint the grasshopper II?
@NordicRC7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Ahh, I'm a bore so the plan for right now is box-art (TS-26). Still time to change my mind though, but got a future project planned, that is going to involve a non-box-art Grasshopper II'ish design, so I think I will make this one box-art.
@ShenRC7 жыл бұрын
It's so boring in white.
@NordicRC7 жыл бұрын
He he, maybe. I like my Grasshopper in green so I might change my mind ... but I kinda like the GH2 in white. The problem is the two primary decal colours, red and blue, they don't mix too easily with yet another dominant colour, other than black and white. IMO :-)
@DeLaCruzer112 жыл бұрын
Did they cut corners on the plastic due to inflation? What I mean is, did they decreased the amount of plastic there by making it less strong in order to compensate for prices of everything being higher today?

Nice build, so far! I am looking forward to recreating my 1988 GHII.... except for bearings (sorry, I can't stomach the thought of using those white hockey pucks in ANYTHING!), it will be box stock. HOWEVER, I want a second one - that I will be chopping up, and making my version of Alberto's AmPro Hornet III, front and REAR double wishbone suspension and the whole works!! 😲😲😎 Can't wait to see the continuation! Just subbed.
@NordicRC7 жыл бұрын
Thank you vey much! Haha, "white hockey pucks" :-) Yeah, until recently I had this rule to build all the classics stock and run it once before changing anything. But I too grew so tired of these 'hockey pucks' so I changed my rule :-) Oh my, I am following along with Alberto's creation too. It is really an amazing job. Would love to see the same thing done to the GH2. Thanks for the sub, sir! Much appreciate meeting other Tamiya enthusiasts!
@jamurphy83867 жыл бұрын
You've got the videos that I want to see. Subscribing was easy! :-) My GH2 will have to wait a bit..... I'm currently building a TT02.... bought and donated piece by piece! I'm kinda poor. 😢😢 Yes, it would have been cheaper just to buy the kit, but I rarely see that much money all at one time anymore. On the plus side, I can have my own mix of parts, and set it up exactly my way! It will eventually be a Rally Car. Still need a body, battery, ESC, and front bumper. One money saving idea, bearings. I only use rubber sealed bearings at the wheels. Everything else gets the cheapo steel shielded bearings. I really want a 240Z body.... but they're getting harder to find, and afford. 😕 At least I'm not doing as bad as my friend, Carmine. He lost nearly everything, yet still tries to keep RC going - for his very sanity.

Do the shock observers fit on the hornet
@NordicRC7 жыл бұрын
Hi Ewan! I'm not sure what you mean? "Shock observers"? What do you refer to and which ones? The Hornet and Grasshopper II share the same gear box but not the same chassis. The shock absorbers on the Grasshopper II are quite useless so I would prefer the original shocks on the Hornet.
@ewanmcarthur20717 жыл бұрын
Nordic RC Visions ok thanks sorry for the bad spelling i dent one of my shocks
@NordicRC7 жыл бұрын
Ohh, my spelling in English are not perfect either. I was just thinking if there was such a thing as a shock observer, and what it was. I still consider myself a newbie in RC so there's always a potential that I missed out on something :-)

"Powerful 380 motor". I almost spit my cereal onto my monitor when I read that. Looking forward to the rest. Also, please don't do this in box art. I'm with Steve, white is SO boring.
@NordicRC7 жыл бұрын
Ha ha, well, I have a laugh each time I build a Tamiya kit and see the 380. Thought it needed a kind introduction. It's amazing, looks almost as tiny as the ones in my old 1/12 - 1/18 Taiyo and Nikko toy-grades. Thanks, looking forward building and filming the rest. Oh no, two against one? I might reconsider it now :-)

I have! It's just a small silver can ;-) Got 540s in both my Hornet and Super Hornet so my Grasshoppers deserve to stand out from the crowd and be very Grasshopper'ish :-)
