I had my doubts when you wanted to paint the landscapes, but wow, there's shadows in there!
@modelchili2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I was hoping for a bit of shadow action!
@NoBettaFeta2 жыл бұрын
Wow! The 3D effect from the paint you used really brought the interior to life. The effect is far more effective than I initially expected it would be. Very cool. Gundam also featured this type of space colony quite heavily starting in 1979!

Thanks! Yeah I'm really happy with how the landscape turned out. 😀

I dunno, Australia and O’Neill cylinders have, historically in fiction, not gone together well. This looks pretty good, though.

2:52 shows that the concept art was done by Studio Nue. As well as making "Space Battleship Yamato" and "SDF Macross" they were involved in "Gundam 0083 Stardust Memory" a major plot point of which was dropping one of these on North America. They clearly have experience in the area.

This kit reminds of the Sides/Colonies in Gundam. They had cylindrical colonies similar to these in both the mainline (Universal Century/UC) and alternate reality Gundam series like Gundam Wing (After Colony/AC). Note: the various Gundam timelines have their own abbreviations for their timelines -- UC, AC, Future Century/FC, After War/AW, Correct Century/CC, Cosmic Era/CE, etc. One constant besides the general Gundam/mobile suit design is the presence of space colonies, many of them being cylindrical-shaped. Some colonies, however, are based in worlds like the Moon and captured/settled asteroids. Those colonies are embedded into the astronautical body and more underground like the Moonbase Alpha colony from Space: 1999.
@21stcenturyguy252 жыл бұрын
This kit is a slightly upgraded O'Neill colony from the original concept - The factory modules in the ring around the top are different. Otherwise Mobile Suit GUNDAM is one of the only Sci Fi concepts to ever utilise the O'Neill style space colonies.
@AvengerII2 жыл бұрын
@@21stcenturyguy25 Oh, so the Japanese animators DID use them! Gundam at moments does actually utilize sound engineering (lately, though, the UC Gundam installments have been almost as fantastic as the alternate reality Gundam series) and concept structures. I imagine they got this "more right" than Star Trek: The Next Generation did the Dyson Sphere. As I understand it, Trek "borrowed" the idea of the Dyson Sphere but went in a different artistic direction which really wasn't what Dyson intended! It's been a while since I've watched UC Gundam but now that I think about it I don't recall the colony designs we saw having rings at one end. I think they did have the retractable large solar panels on them.

The O'Neill Cylinder design is also used prominently in the various Mobile Suit Gundam anime, specifically those taking place in the Universal Century timeline. I believe this video give a good view of them: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6vKqWiPn7JgeMk Anyway, another build to enjoy!

*Me clicking like button before the adds even load in because I'm excited for a new spaceship build even though I have no idea about the particular vessel, BUT SPACESHIP!* And to think how far we'd be in space if they'll actually tried building many of these concepts. I doubt they would've worked well right away but just think were we could've been by now if they kept reaching and didn't stop the space age. Well built sir!

Lovely, as always, particularly the landscaped interiors. I noticed you xwitched from ypur long-favorite Tamiya primer to Vallejo, and also used a different clear-coat. What made you switch? Just the ability to skip and spray can and use the airbrush instead or something else?
@modelchili2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! And yeah, good spotting! The simple reason is that my local hobby store can't get any Tamiya Primer or Flat Clear, there's a bottleneck from Japan to the local distributor. Just a symptom of the times unfortunately.

I suggest an O'Neil cylinder made from The Psyche 16 Asteroid. It would be 80km in diameter and 160km long. Humans could mine the interior for minerals carving out a hollow 120 km long, and 60 km in diameter. Filled with an Ocean made from harvested ice from Saturn's rings.

Really liked this one. ☺️ It seemed to be a simple kit to build, but it finished up looking very satisfying. The textured terrain was a very good idea.. I don't think the stickers would have done it justice. But having said that, I think the reflecting mirrors look fantastic. It would be nice to have a motor on the stand, so that the station could slowly rotate.. But I guess it would have to be geared right down so that it would rotate at the correct speed? Overall a very fine choice. Good job. 👍😁

I think I still would have glued the parts togeather. I dont trust all those press fit connectors. In any event, that one good looking model - certainly a conversation piece. I agree, the scale sort of defies any kind of weathering - one wouldn't see it however, one could try paneling with very faint variations of that white grey. It would be a real problem for time to perform the required masking and such.

For the showcase, you need to have the light shining from the northern end of the habitat (the side of the agricultural ring), so that it reflects off of the mirror panels and illuminates the interior. As designed, they would always be facing the sun this way.
