Chapter 4 of the Wizard’s Tales: The Black Rose Before the gathering of the Houses at the Keep of Atonement… He could hear the footsteps of the would-be intruder from miles away, trudging through the tall grass with an unsteady gait, oblivious to what they may be stepping on or disturbing. “Oi!,” the intruder yelled. Rogerda, the Wizard of Bark, sat on a raised flat stone in the middle of a meadow populated by tiny blue flowers. A light breeze carried a cooling mist from a nearby brook. In contrast, yellow butterflies lazily danced over the tall grass in a seemly random pattern, except for those in the wake of the trespasser interrupting the wizard’s meditation. Not moving, he sat quietly, eyes closed, and waited. The interloper of the wizard’s peace came to stand uncomfortably close, “What! Are you deaf? Did you not hear me calling?” he demanded. Rogerda opened his eyes and looked at the young man standing before him. “First, move back,” the wizard commanded. “You are invading my space; and second, of course I heard you…trudging across the ground like a maimed sniffer. No doubt inhabitants of the deepest crags within the Nether heard you! It’s a wonder you didn’t wake the undead mobs of the night!” The wizard studied the young man. Muddy boots, disheveled clothing, unkempt hair matching the color of his boots and frayed in every direction, all punctuated by a resting face of confusion framing dull green eyes. While the House of Bark had been established some centuries ago and boasted a reasonable population, the Wizard of Bark was a solitary man who mostly kept to himself and enjoyed the company of only a select few. One could say more of the village folk knew the wizard than the wizard knew of others. Perhaps this was the burden of being considered something of an important person, though the wizard would be the first to claim to be nothing special. Nevertheless, Rogerda had no recollection of the young man that stood before him. Taken aback at the scolding, the young man grew uncomfortably silent, a silence which continued for what seemed like an eternity. Finally, after having decided the young man had lost all train of thought and was no doubt wondering who he was and why he was here, the wizard prodded, “You wanted something?” “Oh, right!” the young man opened his jacket and carefully removed an item from an inner pocket. “I wondered if you could tell me what this is? I mean, I know it’s a flower, but…” he said as he handed the flower to Rogerda. The wizard took the black rose. “Where did you get this?” he asked with great concern. “Well, that would be Gerty,” he replied matter-of-factly. “Gerty?” The name wasn’t familiar to the wizard. “Your wife, perhaps?” “My wife?” the young man guffawed. “Oh no, Gerty is my cat!” “Your cat?” Rogerda tried to fathom the scene of a cat handing out black roses to people at random, clearly confused. “Right,” the young man replied, then continued. “When I lay down for a nap, she brings me things. Today she brought me this,” he explained, pointing to the black rose, now in Rogerda’s hand. Rogerda turned the black rose over in his hand, inspecting every detail. He took a breath to ask a question, but the young man continued. “I thought it odd. Never seen one, in fact. I showed it to Graphie who said I should bring it to you straight away,” he said with pride. “And I’m glad you did…wait, what is your name, my boy?” the wizard asked. The young man straightened proudly and tried to tug some wrinkles out of his overcoat. “Alfie, well Alfred. But everyone calls me Alfie. Well, except those that call me “numpty”. I don’t rightly know what that means, but I don’t think it’s real nice.” “hmm…yes, indeed,” the wizard replied. “Well, Alfie, you did the right thing bringing this black rose to me,” Rogerda said, standing. “I must be off. I need to investigate matters that lead Gerty to bring this…prize…to you.” “Is it bad?” Alfie called after Rogerda as the wizard quickly began making his way toward his tower. “The black rose?” “I don’t think it’s anything good,” the wizard answered with all honesty. He turned and called back to Alfie who was still standing by the stone on which the wizard had sat. “And it’s best you stay in at night. Don’t go wandering around!” First, Rogerda made his way to his tower. There he gathered some general supplies, for he would be gone from the village of Bark for an undetermined amount of time. Once satisfied he had what he needed, the wizard mounted his trusty steed and rode to the east and south, towards the House of Greenly. Out of the land of Bark he rode in haste. Passing through birch forests, around streams and rivers, dodging unmarked ravines. After many hours of riding, with barely enough of a break to water his horse, he finally came upon the woods surrounding the domain of the House of Greenly. The inhabitants of Greenly oversaw all things that grow, from the flowers, herbs, fruits, and vegetables to the four-legged beasties that served as livestock and pets. In fact, nearly everyone in Greenly had a dog or cat, or sometimes both (not to mention making pets of the llamas and goats). It was a great testament of how much the House of Greenly cared for the land and had respect for what it provided. It was here that much of the realm of Westerly traded for their food and medicinals. Experts in the growing of all things green, the folk of Greenly knew more than any other about what grows throughout the lands. Here, the Wizard of Bark hoped to get answers to some questions he had regarding this strange black rose. Rogerda slowed his pace as he approached an encampment on the outskirts of the main township of Greenly. Here he was met by an old friend. “Ho! Wizard of Bark,” Jerry exclaimed. “To what do we owe the pleasure of your company?” Rogerda stopped just shy of a nearby gate and dismounted. “That remains to be seen, my friend, he replied noncommittally. “I need to talk with Phiepy on an urgent matter. You should come too.”
@Rogerda62Ай бұрын
Jerry was on the Council for Greenly. An all-around farmer and a bit of a tinkerer, he stood tall with the darkest of brown hair, almost black when seen in the right light. His athletic build misdirected his talents of building all manner of fanciful devices that have worked to improve the yield of House Greenly. One discerning attribute unique to Jerry was his ability to work on such small and intricate machines with only one eye, as his left eye was covered with a patch. Interestingly, he used the eye patch as a fashion statement at times, and wore different designs and colors. Today, he sported a black patch with a metallic design in the shape of a leaf. “Here’s, let me take that,” Jerry said, taking the reins from Rogerda. “I’ll tend to your horse and meet you at Phiepy’s shortly.” With that, they parted ways. Jerry went to the stables, and Rogerda made for Phiepy’s home. “Ho, Phiepy!” the wizard called. He invited himself in (as it was a thing wizards seemed to do; that is go where they please, within reason of course) and looked around. “Empty,” he thought to himself. “Well bless me, if it isn’t the Wizard of Bark,” Phiepy said from behind the wizard as she entered walked through the front door of her house. “It’s been too long.” “Too long, indeed,” Rogerda replied. He had a sterner expression than intended as he turned to greet his old friend. Small in stature and heavily tanned, her brownish skin contrasted with her white hair that seemed to glow when in the sunlight. Piercing turquoise eyes noticed the wizards air of concern. “What’s up, my friend. You look in distress,” she said. Just then Jerry approached and walked through Phiepy’s front door. “Ah,” Rogerda said. “Good, you’re here too.” The Wizard of Bark told them the events that led him here, of how an innocent from Bark named Alfie had found a black rose. He handed the rose to Phiepy. Phiepy took the rose and began her inspection. Turning it over in her hand, then carefully smelling for its fragrance. Unfortunately, she noted no aroma at all, which confirmed her suspicion. She handed the rose to Jerry who studied the rose, seemingly peering at it with his covered eye, which to most would seem rather odd. Jerry also tried to detect an aroma, and agreed there were none. “This isn’t good,” Phiepy commented. She moved to a nearby desk and opened a top drawer. From there she pulled out another black rose. “We found one not too far from here. So far, it is the only one,” she said, frowning with concern. “I was hoping this was a fluke, a single incidence, but…” “So you believe this is not a fluke of nature, not some random mutation?” the wizard asked. “I don’t think so,” Phiepy said. “The lack of any aroma from the rose is a clue of his origin. The only thing we haven’t seen are any carcasses nearby.” “Hmm,” Rogerda intoned. “I was so taken aback from my encounter with Alfie I didn’t think to ask. Though who knows where his cat may have picked up the rose.” The wizard paused in thought, then continued, “Do you know of any more? Have you talked with any of the other Houses?” Phiepy replied, “No. Not yet. But I think we must investigate.” Jerry, who had mostly been silent, spoke up and asked what the wizard dreaded thinking, “So you think…” he began, but was interrupted by Phiepy. “Yes, this is a tale tell sign of a Wither. These are Wither roses.” They all starred at the two black roses, fearing the worst. She turned to Rogerda, “I have business with Saltshaw. I will head there now and inquire of any black roses found.” Then she had a thought. “There is another that might be able to shed some light on whether or not other such roses have been found. She was last seen on the edge of Greenly off to the north. You may want to first try and find here there.” “Yes,” Rogerda agreed. “I’ll leave now, as soon as I can mount my horse. Come Jerry, let us go to the stables.” With that, Rogerda and Jerry went to retrieve the wizard’s horse. Shortly after, the wizard rode again. ***** The wanderers are an ancient caste that have frequented the lands of Westerly for centuries. They owe none their allegiance, except perhaps to themselves and their journals. Through their wanderings, they document all that they see and experience. Although their knowledge is free to any who ask, their answers are often whimsical and cryptic. They travel light, for they’re always on the move; so a wanderer has no place they call home. The only thing that matters to them is their journals. Being somewhat nomadic, it is unknown how they organize and store their journals. It is believed each wanderer likely has many journals, and if asked the right question, they can retrieve the appropriate journal, though from where no one knows. The journals seem to appear as needed, almost as if by magic. The problem most encounter when needing to ask a question of a wanderer is in, in fact, finding a wanderer. In all his years living in the lands of Westerly and through all his travels, Rogerda can’t recall ever having found a wanderer, though he has encountered many over his years. This time was proving to be no different. Having spent the better part of two days searching the area Phiepy indicated, and without success, the wizard, perplexed and weary sat down on the trunk of a fallen tree. No sooner had his butt contacted the bark of the trunk he heard: “Hello, Master Wizard!” Startled, he looked up and to his surprise, there she was: the wanderer known simply as Empress-E. She stood on a raised dais and next to a podium on which was a journal. She pointed her quill at the wizard as if to give a blessing. “Goodness, gracious me!” Rogerda exclaimed. “Where did you come from? I’ve looked all over for you,” he said a bit perplexed and, quite frankly annoyed. “Some see without looking, and others look without seeing,” Empress-E said, laughing. Almost fairy like in appearance and wrapped in a purple cloak, she climbed down to the ground while Rogerda watched. “Yes, well, regardless. We have need of your assistance, if possible,” he began. “A question, you have? If I have an answer, it’ll surely be in one of my journals,” she said. Rogerda walked over to his horse and pulled the black rose from a saddle back. He turned back to his mischievous host and handed her the Wither rose. “Have you seen any of these?” he asked, then continued. “It’s very important for us to know if any others have been found, as we are fearing the return of a Wither.” Rogerda was trying to be as succinct as possible to avoid having the decipher any mystifying riddle. Empress-E took the offered rose, immediately smelled it, then said, “Oh yes, a Wither rose, indeed. We’ve seen many over the years…” Rogerda interrupted, “Yes, there have been recordings of Wither invading from the Nether world. Some were defeated and others seemingly disappeared. But all these incidents are from recorded history. We’ve not known of any Wither invading the lands since the early days of Westerly’s founding.” Empress-E peered at the wizard, somewhat annoyed at being interrupted. Wanderers were skeptical by nature, and she wondered at the intentions of this man. “What has happened before will surely happen again. There is a balance in the world. When there is too much of one thing, another comes to bring about balance.” Rogerda pleaded, “Yes, but have any of your kind seen any black roses, or Wither roses recently? We’ve found two, one near Bark and one in Greenly.” Empress-E opened a journal and thumbed through some pages. Rogerda was surprise he didn’t notice the journal before, nor did he see her retrieve it. The journal on the podium remained. “There are others, yes…hmmm, curious,” she said mostly to herself. And then silence. Not wanting to upset the wanderer, Rogerda tried asking, as gently as possible, “Curious? Is something out of place?” “No, not out of place. That is the curious thing. They are all in a very specific place,” she said, then continued. “You may want to see the Wither roses from the other houses.” “Other houses,” Rogerda repeated. He rubbed his eyes as if to sooth an oncoming headache. When he looked up again all he saw was the Wither rose from Bark laying on the ground at his feet. Empress-E, her dais, her podium, her journal and quill were gone, as if they had never been there. After a few minutes trying to process the strange encounter, the Wizard of Bark mumbled to himself, “Well, I suppose I need to visit the other houses. Cobblestone would be the closest. I need to talk with Lord Cobb about a sword anyway. Might as well kill two birds with one stone, as they say.”

@@Rogerda62 I am on the floor in awe at how amazing this was... You captured everyone's personalities so palpably!!! E sounds almost exactly like me. XD I know who to come to if ever I need help with lore or scripts. Also when Alfie said that the rose came from his cat, for a second I thought the rose WAS his cat...

I am doing such a terrible job keeping up with these videos, but they are always so gorgeous, Figgsy! I love the tower-oak! Idea for the elytra winding up in the wizard's hands: what if your wizard of Bark found a way to steal a phantom's wings? I always wondered why elytra weren't associated with phantoms anyway since they seem so similar. Just a thought. Also, what are your thoughts on a spy character that jumps between houses pretending to be a part of each one of them? Could be a fun way to learn about a lot of different houses' lore quickly. (Lastly, you absolutely nailed the interaction with E's character. The "Hello, friend" had me sold from the start. XD)

I love love love that you're adding in viewers! That's so cool dude! This was so fun to watch, I love your entire style The word Elytra actually comes from Elytron, which is a protective covering of a Beetles hind wings. Implying that the Elytra came from some sort of Beetle. I don't know how you could implement that into your story, but figured I'd share the information in case it inspires any ideas in you!

Alas the winds blew foul on that fateful day of the Battle of the Piglins! A stain on the history of the SaltShaw to be sure, one that can only be washed by the water of time, nevertheless, as sure as the rising of the tide, so shall SaltShaw (say that ten times fast) rise again! Tower of Bark and the Oremine Encampment look great!

"Ah, baby! Sorry chicken your on your own." That made me laugh harder than it should have. The wind rustled the pine needles on the branch on which Empress was perched. She tapped her quill against an obnoxiously empty page. So that's what the great JFiggsy was like in person. For a man who had no house of his own, he seemed rather shocked at her not having one either. Perhaps he could help her research the houses! That would certainly narrow down the options faster if it came time for her to choose. But what was the point in choosing if none of them were right? Well, she wouldn't know that until she had investigated every last detail of those houses. She began scratching at the page. So there was drama among them. Saltshaw and Oremine seemed to have a somewhat muddy history. Did that rule them both out. Maybe? She should wait to see how they reacted to the Whither fight first. Perhaps that meant she shouldn't have crossed Greely out so quickly either... She shifted her weight to the other side and inhaled a lung full of pine scented air. "Speaking of needles, sitting in trees makes your butt fall asleep so fast!" Should she have crossed that out too? No, leave it for the historians to laugh at later.

Also with those clips you being doing could be a whole movie. So if you up for you make another KZbin channel where you write movie with the clips

My first crazy thought about how elytra tie into House Bark... I think of the elytra as the little helicopter seeds that certain trees produce. The general term is "Samaras". The Samaras fell from the great tree. Now how they made their way into the End and how the wizard is involved...I'll need to investigate that further... Google Samaras and you'll see what I mean! 😊
