Jeff Wetzler, co-founder of national nonprofit Transcend, facilitates an interactive conversation on the role of R&D in ensuring that all children, particularly those who have been marginalized by the traditional design of school, can thrive today and transform the world of tomorrow.
Most schools in the US still operate within the 100+ year old "industrial" model of education, which takes a "one size fits all" approach and tends to perpetuate inequities. How might we to reimagine schools to be more relevant to what society and workplaces need, today and in the future? It’s possible and it’s happening!

Great dialogue Jeff. I really appreciate you gleaning and making clear the traditional banking system of education. Can't wait to connect and continue this dialogue with you and others pushing education into more critically conscious realms.

Great talk, great discussion! The current school system was developed in a different context and for a different purpose. The world has profoundly changed since then. The old school system is no longer capable of providing the necessary skills needed to thrive in today's society, so it must be reinvented in a way that serves us all better.

Isn't that old news? Being familiar with KZbin videos of Sugata Mitra, David Thornburg, Roger Schank, Dave Eggers, Seema Bansal, Salman Khan and many others over more than a decade, I would have thought that people at Google would be well aware of the inadequacies of the old education system and regard it as old hat. What is currently needed is ideas and action to morph the existing system(s) to one or more of the many possible alternatives and more organizations like Transcend, Socratic Arts, 826 Valencia, Schools in the Cloud, XTOL, Schank Academy and Bridge Academies International that could act as midwives to new systems.

Jeff and the Google Team --would love to have you vist my classroom. The room is NOT setup in rows of desk, but pods of workstations. Who is in the Pod depends on what project they are working or which student has the expertise needed for tasks to be accomplished. As projects change and the team changes, students develop a contract with the norms and expectations for each of the team mates. The work is completed collaborativelly and students teach each other. Students have to present their findings and results to busines professionals at the end of each semester. Thanks for sharing and yes you are more than welcome to visit

I would be really interested to see where Transcend is now, in the midst of the Pandemic and all that it has meant for public, K-12 education.

This is not new. Student-centered/project-based schools have existed for 30 years. Check out the Big Picture Company schools, High Tech High schools, and Edvisions schools (Minnesota New Country School, High School for the Recording Arts). Elliot Washor, Deborah Meier, and Ron Newell have written great books about this.

Some classrooms use a thumbs up, the wiggly fingers is kind of as quiet applause and showing we support you
