That trick with the awl divots to create a little mechanical connection is freakin genius. A serious “well, yeah” moment. I’ve been working wood a long, long time, and I never fail to learn something incredibly useful from watching you, Lou. Thanks for passing it along, brother. Much appreciated.

Yet another mind blowing episode in the highly anticipated and highly addictive series. I picked up an electric hand planer this week after seeing Louis use them in this series so effectively. That along with half a million other little tricks from everything to transferring points to sharpening a pencil with a hand planer. He does such a great job of coming up with design values such as "won't let you down" and finding practical yet effective ways to implement that in his entire innovation of this dory. Thanks Louis - keep making these.

Hi Lou, Keep up the very interesting work, Just one tip I think that might have helped at the point where you were trying to make a mechanical glued joint at the end of the plastic frames, if you drilled a hole 10mm diameter right through the plastic then insert a wooden dowel into this hole the glue would then bond each end of the dowel to the sides of the slot in the wood.
@johnbower6 жыл бұрын
Mr T, the tip was for Lou, not for someone else that "thinks" they know it all.
@nssdesigns6 жыл бұрын
This is where experience comes in. I'd never be able to think ahead about pulling the frames out of the false bottom and giving it a little wiggle room. Brilliant idea to prod soak holes into the end grain and frame. I'm really interested in the plastic framing BUT I'm sure the teacher at our "Traditional Boat Building Academy" would have a heart attack :-) as we use mostly steamed ash frames... but having said that they're prone to splitting especially in tight areas as the wood just doesn't want to bend that much. Also it's probably the number one and first repair you need to do as they split over time. My Alden Classic has decking front and aft and even the cockpit is seated and planked on the floor so you'll have a hard job seeing these PVC frames. Just need to know where to source the stuff.
@pauleohl6 жыл бұрын
Not PVC. That is UHMW polyethylene.

UHMW has been used in the printing industry for the last 30 years as bearing parts on printing presses and has replaced hardwood cutting sticks on hydraulic paper cutters as well. It's very strong,durable and machineable The downside is it's hard to glue anything to it but it will hold a coarse screw thread like a bulldog the divots and epoxy are an outstanding idea for a good mechanical connection. I now have a better understanding as to how the frames will "flow" into the false bottom in your design. I think you designed this Dory to be lighter than normal also.
@garryharding38036 жыл бұрын

Louis, the boat is looking great! I lost track of the fact that the "false Bottom" is not part of the boat but rather it is the mold. It's all cleared up now :) Question, for this application would low viscosity THIXO work as well as the 5:1 epoxy or would it be too thick?

I hope you were, and in future builds, are using UV-resistant UHMW polyethylene. UV (from sunlight) will degrade the std stuff over time. Painting them might help too, but I'm not sure how well a marine paint will adhere. FYI.

Lou, I love this series! This video really makes me appreciate all the prep work that you had to do up to this point. Quick question, would it be beneficial at all to sand the plastic frames on the end where you're gluing? I know sanding can be really important for paint adhesion, not sure if it'd help with epoxy. Keep up the good work and I can't wait to see the finished Dory!

UHMW is ok outside of any exposure to the sun, but there are better nylon plastics that can take a lot more sun without deteriorating. I used UHMW for some sister ribs in my 46' BC Troll fishing vessel 24 years ago. I hear they have done well and haven't reacted with the fir planking. But exposed to the sun UHMW will go bad sooner than the boat. I think the guys out in western Canada now use a type of nylon when the sun is an issue.

I like the HDPE frames. In previous episode you doubled up the wood and carbon fiber to make it extra durable. Why not make the bottom of the boat out of HDPE as well? It can bend, flex scratch and you can weld it back together if it ever breaks.

Let me see if I have this straight. You bought a sheet of 1" and had them plane it down to 5/8". Then you cut 1" strips and planed them down a couple thou. If you wanted strips 5/8"x 1", why didn't you take the 1" sheet and cut 5/8" strips in it?

Maybe, 5 people who can't stand waiting while 18 minute clips dribble out at the rate of once a month, or 5 weeks , or 3 weeks or two weeks, depending. Definitely Lou is a storehouse of skill, knowledge, technique, wisdom but that is all lessened by poor production decisions. Two skilled craftsmen (with a fraction of the skill) turned "This old House" into a multi-million dollar enterprise, by keeping it to a regular production schedule. Sadly the viewership of Total Boat is shrinking and will stay small and amateur without a regular release schedule.
@dozer16426 жыл бұрын
aviationist goodbye. Go away. View this old house and the View or Mr Rodgers neighborhood and Sesame Street. They are very current and should keep your attention from hour to hour. Lou had more skills in his little fingernails than you could obtain in a doctorate from Harvard. If I have to wait two weeks to get a small portion of it online, i can wait two goddam weeks.

Paul Hitchman : there is no bonding strength with uhmw. Nothing will stick to it as Lou pointed out. Ribs rely on mechanical fasteners, even wood ribs are never glued, only fastened.
@jwilsonhandmadeknives27606 жыл бұрын
The epoxy in the UHMW/bottom joint is mainly filling the gap to prevent the rib from working in the slot, no? The fasteners along with the sandwich effect of the bottom being encased is where the rigidity will come from, if I understand what Lou was saying in earlier videos. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
