Building the ultimate D&D Table: Dungeons and Dados

In this episode of More Tools Than Sense, I start with an ordinary kitchen table and turn it into the perfect multimedia table for Dungeons and Dragons or any other table top game or RPG. It includes built in dice towers, a map and Battle-map HUD, power outlets, storage drawers and more!

lol, come on now, we all know no one has been asking about that thing you call a table. First off, it needs cup holders, what happens when your friend drops a beer bottle on it, or his brat kid spills a half gallon of koolaid on it, do you just wipe it up? Now it's all sticky and nasty, no one wants to play on it, so I say no drinks or snacks near the table, everyone thinks I'm a prick, no one comes over to play anymore, I stand on table to hang a noose and shuffle off this mortal coil. What fun is that😢?

@@spik330 That requires a more thorough understanding of electrical, electronics, and computer sciences. To integrate all of that knowledge along with the carpentry, design, modeling, and basic electrical he already utilized to achieve this table would be an exponentially more difficult task. Being able to do all that would put you on par with the most competent engineers on earth. This is my first time seeing this channel, but the work is inspiring!

@@spik330 yeah putting the PC under the table seems a bit much IMO, I'd just upload some D&D maps to a USB thumb drive, it would work for board games too like Scrabble and Monopoly, all you'd need are the tiles or the pieces you would use to play the games!

Agreed! I love woodworking and RPGs so this is perfect for me. Don’t currently have space for one of these, and I am busy making cabinets right now, but I would love to try something like this. Don’t know about the dice towers though. I am too big a fan of the sensation of rolling dice by hand. On the other hand I do love the monitor in the table.

Keep an eye on the display panel for sagging (inside the plastic body). Most TVs aren't designed to be laid flat like that. If it starts to sag, you'll need to take the back casing off and add support.

@@gimlithegrey4863 you could try a bracket attached to the wall mount points on the back. Personally, I would remove the outer casing of the TV and rest the panel directly on supports.

@@AJamesCo When I built ours I did just that. The supports that hold the TV in place are screwed in to the mounting holes on the back of the TV. So far, after 2 years, it hasn't sagged at all.

No joke, the hidden dice trays are it for me! Never would've thought about doing that one. Ive seen the TV and computer with pull out drawers everywhere. But those towers drove it home. Sure the table could have been built from scratch and dolled up but who cares when it flat out just works like you want. FYI, I'm straight up jacking that idea when I finally "roll" the dice and build me table. Pun itended....lol! Thanks for the share

I think you want a bit more processing power than a pi. You wanna run a full browser, music player, maybe some other tracking programs in the background. I agree with laptop. That way you have a DM screen then the player/map screen

PC is better, since you can always update it later when newer and better software to support DMs becomes available, and the PC isn't going anywhere. It's strapped in by 1/4" thick aluminum bars.

I had the exact same idea in my head about 2-3 weeks ago to do a table just like that, but also have a built-in DM screen. The dice towers were something I didn't think about, and are a very nice touch. Thanks to you I have somewhat of a rough guide on how to do this myself without so much trial and error, and the thought to use a prefab table never occurred to me. Many thanks man!

Great work Indeed I did a TV table top way back but the TV were probably different, with the thickness of the glass, our minis were floating a few millimeters above the screen. From a top down view it was great but when we were sit, there was an angle and our characters didn't seem to be on their right place. When I switched and installed a projector it solved all m'y problems

Super cool, loved it. A suggestion for an improvement: add a video output on the side for a second monitor. This way the GM may have more resources in a second screen hidden from the player and just drag into view!

That's a great idea. He could even put a small one inset into the table top like the dice towers. Where it could slide up into view acting like a GM screen.

@@nathanwall6253 Since the real estate under the table might not support adding another 14" monitor that pops up, he could add just a little pop out insert for a power plug and a VGA/HDMI extension. That way it's not in his way or visible unless he specifically wants to utilize it. He could, instead or in addition, make a cool DM screen that has a cheap connected/networked tablet in it that lets him drag and drop new things into the built-in monitor. I'm certain there are PC anywhere apps that would let him do the same thing with much less work, though the rule of cool would be ashamed of him.

There are a couple of things that could be done here if you really felt you needed an attached screen you can always take one off of an old laptop. As they are slightly more rigid and flat. But at that point I would have it as a stand alone that could fit in the keyboard slot. I did notice that one of your players was a virtual player in the video. Now that I do think would be worth addressing if this is a regular thing. The option for that would be to use either a laptop or a low cost unit like a Arduino or raspberry pi and an old laptop screen (thin and rigid. Might even have a web camera) this covers your table camera options and you could set it up in place of the drawer.

That's awesome, one thing I would have considered doing though is have a second monitor where you had a screen at the end that dealt with dice rolls, you set the number of dice and then you pass a USB big red button for the player to press.

As you found out like I did: cover the area around the cut-out with painter’s tape before you use the jigsaw to protect the surface. You can do the same technique to limit damage around areas you’re going to inlay.

Absolutely incredible! I've been thinking about taking a leafed dining room table and putting a vault with a removable cover into it for tabletop gaming. Along with cupholders, drawers, and outlets. I'm not handy and don't have any of the tools, but it's something that I really want to try!

I'd suggest having a plunger or two nearby so you can pull the glass up quickly in case someone spills their drink and you can wipe up the liquid, either that or water proof it so it doesn't damage the tv if it isn't water proofed already

I use this technique with my builds I designed for dice towers that enables the tower to hide away similar to yours for a flat, usable table when not in use. Start with the table, approx. the size you are using now, and make the necessary adjustments for your television or monitor. Once you inlay that and the glass, you measure out your dice tower. Adjusting for the folded dimensions, you take a hacksaw made with a titanium blade (for a better cut and less mess) and you hang it up on the peg board. Then you use a standard dice tower and throw it in your D&D bin when not in use. Congratulations, you saved hours of work and a headache when it inevitably gets damaged. You can also put it anywhere you choose and fit more players at the table. Revolutionary.

We RPG players are always coming with new, inventive ways to improve our gameplay... in the late 2000s / early 2010s, I remember using The Sims 2 a lot to build the maps, with "move_objects on" cheat enabled to play. We'd never had such 3d perspective, it helped a lot visualizing the combat, specially for line of sight issues.

Instead of a tower pc. You could use a raspberry Pi 3/4 or something similar. Its much much smaller. uses way less power and depending on cheap pc you find, the raspberry pi can be more powerful. The raspberry pi can be held in place with just Velcro. Anyways, love the build.

This was an amazing build! Still, it seems like visibility for the screen might be a bit bad from the game master's perspective and since there's so little room on the sides I don't know how comfortable it'll be for the players if they have to put down their character sheets, notes, drinks, snacks, etc. That said, I'd still love to have it!

Something I've always wanted for a build like this is almost a "viewfinder" for the DM, sort of a small slide-out display so the DM can make changes & view the map from their end- Although of course that idea works 100% better with digital player character trackers

I've always wanted to make something like this, and I have some decent tools I have inherited, but I have almost no experience with woodworking or crafting in general. The way I have learned nearly every skill I have is by just trying it out. If you jump in to a project, not expecting it to be perfect but just trying to learn something new, it will be a million times better than the table you never made at all!

I had zero experience with woodworking either but the thing is that there are tons of youtube videos (like this one) that usually go over how to make the thing you are trying to make. Just by watching them I've been able to do some maintenance to my furniture and make some cool presents for people to use.

I did cabinetry and custom storage for over 20 years, and one of the best tricks I can share with you is to get yourself a decent pile of scrap material and keep that onhand for trying new things. You can use this junk material for teaching yourself new techniques without a lot of costly 'dammits' on your actual project stock. The second best info I can give you is to go through your tools and see what shape they're really in. Bearings wear out, and then your cuts won't be true. See if any of your cutting tools have 'slop' in the blade (see if it wiggles laterally to the cut direction). If they do, only use them for rough cuts and get a new, but cheap, piece of equipment that hasn't seen any abuse and use that for finish work. And last, use push blocks on small cuts. They're easier to replace than fingers. Now, go make something cool ;)

@@ApeBlin some advice from a guy who did a 2 year course in carpentry be very careful with any machine with spinning parts we had a guy in the year above us try to use a table router and tried to rout from the wrong direction, the piece flew out of his hands and his fingers got turned into ground meat by the router blades.

Some observations: 1) Players have little room for their papers. Consider getting some fold up TV dinner trays or whatever they're called, that players can position next to them. 2) DM has no room for a DM screen due to table size and positioning of unnecessary pop up dice rollers. That seems important. 3) The computer is likely low performance and may struggle with some of today's modern map display tools that use animated visual effects. That, and the TV, will make a bunch of heat with little ventilation. TV's are not usually meant to sit horizontal with bright images for hours. 4) It might have resale value to another nerd (unlike many homebrew projects that men do), but now you're stuck with this giant TV table thing in a housing market where every bit of floor space is extremely expensive, and it doesn't look like anyone is having dinner on this, so does that mean there are two big dining tables in the house? 5) The DM's positioning is such that the primary monitor is basically in a portrait view, which easily gets messed up on various map display softwares. 6) DM doesn't seem to have a private computer monitor for viewing their own digital data that they don't want the players to see, unless they pull out a laptop or some other separate monitor. Not everyone needs that, but it's sure handy for quickly looking things up, playing music, etc. 7) It looks like you have to crink your neck to see what the dice rollers produced. I wouldn't want to do that as a DM for many hours in a row. I didn't watch the entire video in super detail, so maybe these points were discussed, but something to keep in mind for anyone emulating.

Now, I was just deciding to show this to my partner who likes DND for fun, but now I’m actually enjoying this! This table is so cool so far, love the implementation of a TV too, kinda like one of those movie screen tables where it’s a touch screen. It’s so cool! And the hidden dice boxes too, loving that! Great woodwork!
