We're finally building our own NAS / media server, and we're using Unraid with ZFS to do it. This first part is all about the hardware. Wendell from Level1Techs is helping.

In this video, we'll be assembling our own DIY server. We're using the following parts for this build:
ASRock Rack X470D4U2-2T AM4 Motherboard w/ IPMI (Amazon): geni.us/cqFS
AMD Ryzen R5 3600 (Amazon): geni.us/XMMNrW
SilverStone CS381 (Amazon): geni.us/1fqCikA
Cryorig C7 cooler (Amazon): geni.us/Dp35EL
AMD RX 5700 (Amazon): geni.us/YHAbFc
Old NetApp disk shelf
This two-part series will offer a loose guide to how you might go about building your own NAS for a DIY solution. We're using ZFS on Unraid for our DIY NAS, but this part focuses on the hardware and build. A major aspect of our build is a board with IPMI support so that we can remotely manage and boot (even from an off state!) the server, useful for business environments. You could also apply these basic steps to home theater and HTPC builds, where a home media server might be the end goal. For us, a small business file storage server was our goal, and so we called in help from Wendell at L1T. The build also uses an older NetApp Disk Shelf to give us expansion possibilities up to 32 drives, + additional SSDs. One of our other benefits is easy addition of Steam Cache to accelerate game downloads after the first download of a game.

It's great seeing Wendall on your show Steve. I built a dual xeon server with an ASRock RACK motherboard and used to watch Wendall's videos on setting up a NAS server, configuring users and groups, setting up iSCSI, NFS, and SMB shares. What an experience. I was fascinated with the 14 onboard SATA ports (several of which were SATAII and not SATAIII). Now using SAS drives on both an internal LSI controller for my two 8 drive vdevs in my Pool, and an external LSI controller with an Expander for my 24 bay JBOD. Look at how fast things are changing... Love the show.

What I love about Wendell is that he takes approachable solutions to consideration. Linus is all about "let's throw money at it!". Sometimes you don't have all the money but need to kind of work with what you have and make best of it. Wendell is a hacker and that is what tech people truly need. Linus tickles the side of tech enthusiasts more. And yes, there is a difference. Tech people get stuff because they need it, tech enthusiasts get stuff because its shiny. Not saying shiny is bad but it does reach very different goal.

I'm honestly starting to get really sick of them randomly shilling LTTstore in the middle of videos for no other reason than to shill LTTstore. They should do what GN does: "buy" ad spots from themselves and keep the ad in the ad portion of the video. It's also okay to do it mid video when, for example, GN does a video card teardown and mentions you can buy the mat he's working on. Those are at least relevant. Linus interrupting random videos to tell me to buy a hoodie is straight up bullshit.

@@borisyeltsin6606 the branded shelves have optimized firmware to work with the vendor software. they work better with the software they are optimized for and tend to cause some "undesirable behaviors" if you swap the disks for off the shelf it's slightly better but you have to watch the modules too.

Quick Occult Fact: The circle surrounding your pentagram is a circle of binding. So if you did accidentally call up Linus, he would be contained within the circle. Destroying your circle in an attempt to stop the ritual would only set Linus free to roam about the GN office.

As someone who has an ITX addiction that I can neither explain or defend it was nice to see a real world ITX build. They aren't just like a full or mid tower build just smaller. Plan on taking a lot of time, even days as you saw parts just don't fit even with the best laid plans. One note Steve, while I love the very high level of knowledge that you bring to the table. I've been in computers since the C64 and can't keep up with all the acronyms and initializations that fly out in your videos. Maybe you could invent something automated to drop a cheat sheet into the video description based on those used in the video? Love the channel.
