Step By Step Build Of The Ultimate Home Workshop!
In this video I will be building an extension onto the side of my workshop! We will be demolishing the old building and making the new workshop extension from scratch! If you want to build a DIY home workshop yourself, then this is how you do it!
First we dug the footings and poured concrete in, once that was set we worked on the foundations which was two concrete blocks high. It was first filled with large rubble and hard core, then smaller rocks and type 1. Next a waterproof membrane was laid and the concrete floor was poured. The walls were made from concrete block which is stronger than cinder and breeze blocks. We made a timber frame roof with a two layer heavy duty felt on top. Inside the workshop we fitted lots of LED strip lights and plug sockets for power. This extension is made my workshop so much bigger and I'm looking forward to making lots of new pieces of furniture in it.

Looks great. I am no expert on concrete but thought you were supposed to put rebar in the floor to prevent it from cracking. IDK looks like the builders knew what they were doing.

Wow - great job! Looking forward to the new shop when you have it sorted out. This is why I always bring in the pros for this stuff - if I try it, I know that it will lead to disaster. Especially true for plumbing and electrical!

Hey Mate, Yeah I think I will be adding foam to the roof, which will help keep the warmth in and reduce sound levels.

Hi Sean, I hate to say this but you need much more than just render on the outside of the new workplace. Here in the UK we normally build structures with a double skin with an air gap between for insulation, sound deadening. Also, you should have insulation between the rafters to stop heat loss from the property.

In the winter,it’ll be as cold on the inside as it is on the outside. Footings should be a minimum of 1m deep,two skins of brick/block work with appropriate insulation,insulation under the concrete slab,mitred fascia’s,insulation between joists and over boarded. That aside good job. Who doesn’t want extra workshop space?

Hey John, Yes we're still going to insulate the roof, which will help keep some warmth in and improve sound levels. The thing about the double skin wall is, the existing garage is just single walled, so it wouldn't make a difference if I did it here as well. Plus I was on a budget so couldn't afford it.

@@SeanEvelegh It’s a workshop,not a living space. It’s a functional space,it’ll do exactly what you need it to do. Additional insulation would allow winter glue ups,without worrying about the cold.

I’d go with rockwool,the thickness of the rockwool depends on the size of your joists. If you choose rockwool,you’ll need to overboard your ceiling to keep the insulation in place,maybe 6mm mdf or thin plasterboard. Celetex or kingspan woul be great,but very expensive. When I built my workshop,I looked on facebay for rockwool,got a really good deal. Allow around a 50mm void between the underside of the roof and the insulation for air flow,prevents dry rot. Good job Sean. I appreciate you would not need Planning permission but did you have to go through Building Regulations? I appreciate you are on a budget but you may regret having a flat roof. Anything over 10 years will be a bonus and it will have to be re felted all over again. Rubber (flocked) comes with a 20 year guarantee and not much more expensive. Is it bigger than what was there before? BTW the concrete beam above the door is called a lintel. It is great to have a new space and lay it out to what best suits you. Plus you have the bonus of adding value to your parents property.

Nice little addition to the workspace ! Did you not consider a double skin construction with insulation in between to make it warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer or did the budget not allow which I fully appreciate or are you intending to cross batten and insulate internally and then over skin with MDF or Ply ? I would though have tried to stretch to using a GRP Roof system as opposed to felt, at least with GRP you get a 20 Yr Guarantee. Finally are you hoping to build a shed outside to house your extractor and then duct it through the wall, it certainly helps with noise and dust pollution. Nice little addition though ! 👍

Hi Kevin, Sadly I didn't have enough money for that option. However the existing workshop is single walled with no insulation, so it wouldn't have done much anyway if I did do it. I am planning on insulating the roof myself at a later date. I'd love to put the extractor outside but unfortunately that isn't possible in my situation. Thanks for watching mate!

This should be great & give you more flexibility in your work. Interesting that there was no insulation on the walls or roof. I know machinery produces heat but in winter, it's going to be cold?

It’s good to have more space but won’t it be damp as a single skin of blocks / bricks, whilst having a DPC for riding damp, won’t stop the damp from rain against the walls?! I’d hate to see your nice woodwork tools rusting.
