Hi Laurie and Luke, watching sailing (mostly boat building) videos since more than 12 years now finally FINALLY somebody seems to make the right decisions: doin professional work by the professionals with professional tools and professional products ! I'm a Master-Degree Paintshop-Manager from Berlin, Germany and (believe me or not) i'm extremly lucky watching you having professional welding, professional sandblasting and finally a professional paintjob done to your project boat. It ist really extremly refreshing besides all the DIYers and their failures to look at you and have the deep feeling that you are doin it right ! These jobs you have shown in the last few episodes are definitivly nothing for trial and error. Good luck with all you future decisions and may the Lahakai takes you to all the destinations you have ever dreamt of !

We definitely went through our trials and failures to get to this point and we can't emphasize enough how your location is one of the most important things for a successful boat build. We are now surrounded with real professionals with expert advice and we are trying to listen to all of their wisdom! Finding good people is part of the work! The best part is yet to come, we have a surprise about the wood interior... it's going to knock your socks off, Promise!! Stay tuned!

Nice concept, but I would highly recommend a diesel engine. Electric, maybe on a big foam core catamaran but only with the capacity to get into the harbor in combination with a hybride diesel for off coast maneuvering I would highly recommend to use a diesel engine that can run on old fryer oil. Then you can collect fryer oil on a bicycle with a few jerrycans for free. Just dump it in a big tank and you’ll motor almost for free. And often they’ll start the engine on a small tank with diesel in order to heat the fryer oil with a copper pipe around the exhaust so it becomes more viscous. You should check out this Dutch couple. They sail a Dutch steel sailboat that they fixed up on a budget. Recycled mast with a tapered boom build from the excess length of the mast, biodiesel engine, custom self steering wind vane, custom build pilothouse with inboard steering, wood stove etc. etc. This is part one of a three episode show and tell interview. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6Ksf3uMmK2ceNEsi=axEoRcBc_UltUhwg

Hey guys, Just make sure you look at your power budget ie regen from sailing carefully considering realistic boat speeds. SInce it is a steely, this may not be that great unless you have great wind. DOn't beleive all that you read...most is BS. MY boat will only just be getting there and I imagine it will sail at 8 knots minimum being a cat and less than half of your weight. Sounds good though. Good luck!

Consider using solar panels for the actual roof on the cockpit. A bead of silicon between them and a few alum pop rivets and it will be permanently sealed and structural sound. Check out EG4 48V server rack batteries. They have waterproof ones VERY REASONABLE. Using 12 volt in series is a problem making 48 volt. If you have one cell set of the bms the entire system goes down. With 48v batteries and 48 volt bms in parallel , if one cell goes down only one battery pac shuts down, you will not notice it all and you still will have power just a bit less of it. This is a BIG problem if you have an electric powered boat. You Cannot have the full electric to the motor go out just because of a bms problem on one battery. CHEERS and I love what your doing ! Before purchasing your batteries, talk to the manufacturer. Because of the different BMS used there are limits on how batteries can be configured and the max load. Most now have quite a lot of knowledge about using them with electric propulsion systems. You may even find a sponsor.👍 As others have said, reach out to others that are already sailing with all electric systems. They will probably have a wish list of how they want to improve on what they have so giving you the chance to have an even better system. Wishing you all the luck in the world, and looking forward to seeing the rest of the build.

Make sure you have the right fire extinguishers for those batteries, and never drain a lithium 100% it will stop working and on next charge attempt it can explode or burn. Please install voltage regulators to alarm or cut-off charge at a set amount listed for the batteries. Never drain a lipo 100% no mater what the manufacture tells you. Awesome Build keep it rolling

Many modern lithium batteries come with a Battery Management System (BMS) built in to each battery that monitors charge, voltage, temperature, discharge rate, etc. It shuts the battery down when you try to do something dangerous, such as discharge it 100%. You still need a good charge controller, but each BMS protects its own battery.

I think electric is a good choice. While it seems you have lots of panels and batteries, I would try to make room for adding on the go. It may seem wrong but adding solar panels vertically on the side rails is a place where no extra windage is created and early morning and reflected sun is picked up. It is really hard to make solar panels perpendicular to the Sun, so having more than needed is always good. My little 400watt pack is flat to the roof yet even at 50 degrees north we get over 300watts out of it.... so long as we can find a place to put it. Most of the time we can't so the Sun is there but we can't use it all. However, when it's cloudy we are still ok.

Ditto on the Schlick comments. As an architect and builder of several homes, planning and using the right methods and materials distinguishes the skilled from the average DIYer. I have a steel Bruce Roberts ketch undergoing a refit now. Complete rearrangement of the interior too. The theme is ‘less is more’, as opposed to production builders who throw everything but 5he kitchen sink into a small space. Sleeps for two, suppers for four, and drinks for six adults sums it up. Best of luck and happy building.

Very much appreciated! 🙏🙌 We love learning and wanted to do this project build to get our hands dirty and learn. But to do the quality like these pros do would take years of practice. Hats off to them and we are in a very fortunate place where high quality professionals are affordable (Brazil). We also love the less is more design and are trying our best to get some clean lines and open space in the boat while also getting maximum storage. A tricky thing in a small boat. Would love to see your refit, are you posting videos?
@einarquay
@einarquay Жыл бұрын
@@lahakai I am not posting videos, however, I am thinking about doing so, not to make money, just to archive the effort so others might find it helpful. Strategies for simplicity are also on Sailing Uma early vids. Mine are to create multipurpose spaces. One example is using an extension of the galley countertop to create a dining table, nav station, and prep area all in one surface. I eliminated the v-berth and put the head in there, along with storage for lighter things, and a mounted vice. The toilet is right under the deck hatch to catch light and give me 3” more headroom while seated. It’s hard to use a head when underway in rougher seas so a passage bucket will be used near the companionway where there is a locker. The settee is 1.2 by 2.0 M , and is the shared bed too. Another berth is narrower for passages and all complete with lee cloths. I also have one quarter berth accessed through the wet locker. So the settee is two things, a berth and a divan. The head is a head, storage and work area. The galley is a galley, nav area, and dining table for one. There is also a closet and drawers across from the second bunk. I got rid of things I don’t need and gave myself things only a larger boat could accommodate . The big deal is making sure you maintain bulkheads wisely. They don’t necessarily have to be symmetrical in all cases.

Team, I am a marine engineer with over 40 years experience. I have seen green water on a forecastle fit /remove even welded equipment off the deck. Your foot switches will be subject to wave action. Any green water sweeping across the deck has the potential to lift the switches off the deck. If you only glue them on, they could be swept off leaving a nice 10mm hole in the deck. I recommend that you both glue and screw these items to the forecastle.

Hi guys, I applaud you for your plans. Big respect! As a sailor I would like to give you some advice regarding your electric plans: First big thumbs up for your intentions going solar and wind power. Please do the math: how much power does every piece of equipment use and how much can you charge the batteries. Bear in mind that the maximum capacity of your solar panels only is when the sun is shining. Also the wind generator gives max 250W, but that is also only in perfect wind conditions. When there is no sun (at night and during very cloudy days) and there is no wind, (which happens more often than you think) you are not charging your batteries. Especially the fridge, autopilot, pumps, windlass and watermaker consume a big amount of energy. My advice is: make a backup plan for energy consumption.

I really hope you took my advice and went over to Sailing Vessel Mig channel and checked out his electric setup and his recent test of a very similar setup on a 27 foot sailboat. He basically proves that you should have a small camping type of generator on board. One that will run off gasoline or propane especially if you're the type of sailor who wants to set a destination and direction to travel to and the weather doesn't cooperate. Harbor freight has a small Honda knockoff camping generator that's about the size of a 5 gallon gas can for under $1k and they're tough and super quiet especially if you add a different quiet muffler. Capt Topher from Mig said that in his prior experience with having one in a box bolted to a lid removal box on the back deck that they will last for 5 years and then you have to buy a new one due to the salt. Lahakai is going to turn out amazing when she's done.

I applaud you for trying to make the world a better place than you found it and just have a positive impact. I was all about solar and wind generators etc until I seen Michael Moores documentary who didn't seek out the truth he discovered and I started looking into the horrible facts surrounding batteries and how the cobalt is mined along with the fact that solar panels aren't being recycled and they're toxic waste. It's not any different than these huge wind turbines we're seeing go up all over the world. Fact is it takes 20 years to pay for themselves and their installation. They also need replacement after 20 years. Now I see these idiots are bound and determined to start putting these wind generators in the ocean wherever there's windy conditions the majority of the time!!! I live close by where local farmers have leased 5 acres for 20 years to the power company and I cannot even count how many have caught fire, had the brakes go out resulting in a broken blade etc. Our school system bought a large one and we tax payers paid for it and the installation and maintenance. It doesn't make enough power to power the entire school which is a small school in comparison to most districts and in the state I live in if you generate more power than you use per month the power company has to send you a check for the surplus power that you harvested and sent into the power supply. This hasn't happened, so we've paid for a generator and still have a power bill and in 20 years the whole entire blade system and generator will need replaced. I think it's a good idea for a single family home where you buy a much smaller generator especially in my state. A friend of mine has a small 5 blade wind turbine and he usually gets enough money from the power company to pay his $4k property tax bill every year. Joe Rogan had a guest on who's witnessed the horror of cobalt mining..

Hi I really loved your sailboat and all the changes that you made. However I see large gaps under the reinforcement bars for the hull. I thought that they were supposed to be welded on the hull every six inches apart at least. Huge gaps underneath not sure what they are reinforcing. I saw on your vdeo when you were looking for a boat yard flying overhead there was a yacht that had the boat holder that looked just like yours and on the top were the solar cells. Looked so nice. Now you cut it off. OMG. It looked so good on that other yacht with the solar cells. You have better weld it back. LOL

You are definitely on track with the proposed battery 🔋 setup, However,, your boat will need at the very LEAST 3000w of charging. That means at the very least, you will require a generator using gas ⛽️ or diesel to replace the charge that a mere 3 solar panels can provide. There is no free power.

We are working on finding more spaces for panels. For now there's a guaranteed three panels but hopefully with some creativity we can find some more spaces on our small boat. We saw some others doing slide out or flip up panels when stationary. Lots of possibilities out there! Cheers!

I think you should reconsider your propulsion choice if possible and use an electric outboard instead of a electric Pod motor. The Pod requires mounting thru holes and becomes an appendage hanging off the hull, and I don’t believe the affordable options are cut out for living below the water for long periods of time based on how poorly the outboard versions hold up that only spend part time submerged. Obviously if you have any serious issues, you will need to haul out, whereas an outboard is much easier to service, even upgrade or replace if necessary. I would also recommend purchasing batteries that can be easily accessed and that you keep a backup/replacement BMS or two onboard in the event of a failure since you are wiring up a number of 12V in Series for 48V. And unfortunately with your hull shape being inefficient and of heavy displacement, maintaining cruising speeds with the electric motor is going to consume a lot of power relative to the size of your solar system. I would suggest working backwards and figuring out your target cruising speed relative to hull speed and then making sure you have enough solar to at least offset that consumption. Ideally you should have more so the bank is recharging while you are at cruising speed, and the bank capacity can then be used when you lose sun or need peak motor power. Just some suggestions from a guy who has been building solar electric boats for a while now.

i appreciate the idea of going full electric but i still believe some type of generator/backup propulsion on board in case of emergency. The number of boats that get hit by lightening is a major cause for concern.... Parlay revival got hit twice in a short period of time and you don't even have to get a direct hit to fry every system on the boat - a close strike can get you. Be prepared- be smart - be safe.

Absolutely! and since thaye are in the deep water, it conducts electricity and there's no real ground for the electrical charge. The lightning also produces gazillions of colts of electricity. I think we need to see how we can insulate all electrical and electronic equipment from lightning strikes. Guys what kind of vomms antenna do you have? Now a days you have powerful compact antennas which don't need to be installed on the mast. Also I wanted to ask of there is a way to remove the mast mid sea and store it and plug the hole water tight and run the yacht only on motor and windmill which they have installed. This is for emergencies. The good thing is that they have installed a fan on the back of the yacht which acts as a windmill. This will generate electricity through wind. And also propel the craft forward a bit because the air thrown behind by this windmill will also have some force.maybe half or one knot from this.

We will dive into more detail about our set up after the wood interior build, once we start installing the equipment. Also, we're going to have to do a lot of testing. As Sailing Uma said, even after all of the planning and calculations, what happens in real life can change a lot of factors. We will be having a wind generator and we are considering the options for emergency generators. There are some areas in the world that require them so it might be a necessity regardless. There will definitely be some lifestyle adjustments needed to be made to coordinate with battery life. Lot's to come!!

Hi Luke & Lori, this morning I was searching for your “update” as usual around 9 - 9:30 to no avail, but finally in the early afternoon I saw the notice of your upload… Good to see the progress you are making, the boat hull is starting to look very nice with the multiple protective coatings ! In regard to the electrical installation, it appears to me, that the combination of solar array and windmill is on the small side when considering the overall capacity of your battery banks, which only considering the 48V bank should be topping out at ~ 8kWh, + the 12V system in addition to this… Your solar & wind generation of ~ 1400 W seems too weak to replenish the batteries in one day, if you use the battery bank for the house load and motoring you will need double the capacity at least, except on days when you will not use the motor a lot, or not at all. Your choice to install an induction cooktop is against other opinions a very good one, as I can confirm from experience : cooking times (and therefore power consumption) is minimal, and by the time you get really used to cook on induction cook tops, you will never want to miss it, as the temperature regulation, timer feature and the easy to clean fact are priceless and let you look like a professional cook ! Even grilling and pan searing with proper seasoned cast iron pans/griddle plates is a walk in the park - you will love it ! Looking forward to see your progress !

Hello Helmuth!! Ah we are so glad you checked in for our video. We ran a little late this week, but we are back in the air!! We've are really juggling the size of our boat with the equipment we can fit on it. Once we dive more inside we will see if its possible to get either more batteries or be more creative with ways to get more energy. The way we see it is there is going to have to be some lifestyle adjustments and lots of planning to live on a small electrical boat like this. Sticking primarily to minimal motoring and predominantly sailing and planning way ahead. We'll need to do lots of testing for sure. We totally agree about the cooktop. We've been running the numbers and though a cooktop can pull lots of energy, it cooks at a fraction of the time. We are testing it at home now and boiling water is in minutes. We looked into a 12v kettle and it would take 45 minutes to boil. So there is also time is also a big factor, not just the number on the tag. Cheers!!

You can build anything you want the limitations are weight distribution and running duration. I am glad you chose LiFePO4 battery's in a boat. I have an EV and in a battery fire I can get out of the car. You possibly could go into why you chose LiFePO4 vs the more energe dense alternatives. Also with your batteries I had a Karaken attack my boat and rip of the rudder holing the boat (nothing surfaced and it missed the keel). Anyway my batteries were low in the boat but under a fibreglass cover, the cover created an air bubble under the water and the batteries stayed 100% operational over the 7 days it took me to limp the remaining 2 days of the "8 day trip". 7 days underwater in the bubble. Think a bucket over the battery I never knew who made that but it was painfull for dealing with cables but saved the boat! My concern battery and solar only is outrunning a storm will not be possible as it gets closer you get less power from the sun and need more power to go faster or run the autopilot. I would recommend a generator just for that scenario where it can supply the motor and charge the batteries you cannot imagine how hard the autopilot works in bad weather and 100% you will not be out hand steering for hours in a storm but out and back in checking when it feels like the Karaken hidden in the squal's chasing you is a little further away. Also batteries and a steel boat a generator will be a get out of jail card in a lightning strike provided the motor does not take the hit (the boat hull should provided you do not fair it too thick). Being a Kiwi I would recomend going South, Fiji, Rarotonga and then Australia and the Great barrier and Whitsunday Islands. Be very aware of where you are in Aust as Crocodile territory comes up fast but it is some of the best sailing and publoc mooring locations for swimming and diving. Raro has the best reef's and Fiji is very similar but cheap if you need work on the boat with stuff from NZ. Here in NZ in summer around the North Island but you are better to fly from Fiji to the south island and do a lap in a van the sea and number of harbours are a fair distance between in fast changing rolling from Antartica. You won't regret the Pacific Islands or Australia east and west coast further north you may want AC and d'nt go under Australia lots of old sailing wrecks better to go over the top with the heat and crocodiles. NZ South Island and below is the only place I have been knocked down with wind and wave at the wrong time never all the way over yet. Anyway in a steel or alloy boat you can choose all the latitudes and what side of the equator just pick the season and weather window better than I seem to and also there is a orthodox direction to sail a lap of the planet, going the wrong way can be hard work for weather patterns usually it is skirt around a storm. Anyway there is a movie you need to watch as new sailors "Captain Ron" from 1992 it is a compulsary watch for all sailors! Fair Winds and following seas.

Glad you're having pros involved with your build. It can cost a lot more, but you get a faster, safer result in the long run. Only thing I would question is whether the coatings used were water soluble. The water bubbling out of the paint gun air line and then mixing with the paint would be disastrous for solvent based paints.

Also you should check out his awesome new 12 volt fridge that he used the old ice box placement and added this custom designed system that's built by a small business owner who said if you call him with your information he can build anyone one of his systems as long as you're willing insall it.. they're super efficient and work just like a house fridge works. Going fully electric is both very challenging and very interesting. Of course as this is something relatively new in boating, most people will suggest keeping the old but reliable technologies, such as diesel propulsion. But on another hand the era of gas and diesel engines are coming to an end. So why not electric? My only concern will be to have an alternative propulsion method, just in case. An outboard motor?

Guys , you have to knock them welds down. A lot of drag there. Also where are your bulkheads. Looks like fun, but at the same time you want it safe. I've seen first hand what the southern ocean can do to a trawler. This is why I asked about the lack of bulkheads.
@lahakai
@lahakai Жыл бұрын
We did shave down the welds, they show up worse on camera because of the shadows. The remaining will be smoothed out with fairing compound to eliminate any drag. Since our boat is quite small and made of steel, it's original design does not have bulkheads and it not necessary for structure. We did add a watertight bulkhead in the bow though for collisions. Cheers!

You know what people use for galvanization on steel boats? Aluminum! (not exclusively, yes I know they use zinc as well, but also aluminum). You can be sure galvanization and rust will be there whenever steel and aluminum are together. I hope it turns all right for you. If I had steel boat I would avoid any aluminum parts, think twice about every electronic installation and 3 times about any electric installation for communication. In a steel boat you are basically sailing and living in one big Faraday cage. Fingers crossed it works for you.

Hello there from ChCh, NZ, Brilliant to see just how fast things are going .... The is a Major 'Thing' that worries me ..... Just WHY were All those external hull welds NOT 'Dressed' to be a LOT Flatter and Smootther...... ????? I am Not saying that you have to 'Flush' grind them, just remove the excess weld. ( 'Flush would reduce the ' Weld Joint' Strength ).... This leaving a more hydrodynamic surface... ALSO leaving less surface and spots for the ' Sea Growth' that will definitely happen. When trying to clean the hull around those rather Large Welds, these areas will wear thru' so easily, also when touching/rubbing against Rope of Jetty, the paint will wear off/thru' in these areas very quickly, thus exposing the Raw Steel and negating All your Wonderful work. Best to All from New Zealand

Electric boats have been around for years of course they were small lite fiberglass boats used primarily to give tourist a ride in the harbor and therefore can be plugged in each night . Small diesel motors are still the obvious choice and used world wide . I loved my Yanmar , started everytime , sipped fuel and ran very clean .

The hull looks like a mosaic. I didn't notice it last time 😅 Anyways, I've doubts about the solar panels + batteries. Considering shadows, inclinations, and many other factors, panels won't generate enough power to refill batteries. 160*12*8= 15,3Kw, paired with 1,4KW (from sun+wind)? Even in the perfect day with many hrs of sun and constant wind, can't produce enough to refill those batteries (plus 3,8kw of extra batteries). Two strings 12+12 = 24v, did the scheme was wrong and you are doing 4*strings instead? The Victron MPPT 100 | 30/50 can work under 12v or 24v, so why they are pairing it with a 48v inverter/batteries? About the engine, how much power it requires? And, what kind of displacement weight we are talking about? How many lbs it needs to move? Editing, music, narration it's great actually. Very nice!👍

I don't want to be the naysayer here and put a cloud, literally, over your great adventure. I dont think you have enough solar or wind to charge all those batteries well. This is from personal experience on my sailboat and helping others that have massive power banks. First, the ratings for wattage on panels and turbines is way optimistic. I have a 600W wind turbine running day and night powering a 12V deep cycle starter battery for a 56hp diesel and two 210ahr AGMs for house DC. The house DC is lights, bilge pumps, radios, radar, Raymarine MFD, and navigation lights. The starter bank can be isolated from the other bank. I have two Renogy hard solar panels 200W each and two Renogy flexible panels on my bimini 175W each for a total of 750W charging two 206ahr SOK lithiums. The lithiums power a 2000W inverter that runs 120AC for my cabin outlets that power refrigeration, a laptop 2 cell phones, 2 fans and once a day coffee maker, toaster, microwave and water heater (all used only 1 at a time). Each system can charge the other when needed. My experience is I only get about 20amps max with the solar array and 10 to 12 with the wind turbine when it is humming fast. I live in Florida on a river and get plenty of sun and wind. I am often worried when my voltages get low (below 12.1) as this stops the Inverter from working, regardless of how well the LiFePO4 batteries can handle it. You will find, like Capt. Kirk of Starship Enterprise "I need more power Scottie" who replies "I'm given her all she got Captain!" As to your huge battery bank, the problem is when so many are hooked together they charge extremely slowly. It can take several hours for a large solar bank, like 800W to move the voltage 0.1V. So, when the voltage in the big bank gets low for any reason, like no wind and heavy electric motor use, it is really hard to get that voltage back up. My buddy has this problem with a bank of only four 200 ahr AGMs. He has to fire up a 3500W gas generator to run 30amp chargers to get his bank back up, even with 800W of solar! You are planning on running an electric motor! The advice of some to buy a gas powered generator is solid. Also, plan on adding more solar and a bigger wind turbine. The calculations for power needs are better assuming you will get, at best, 50% of ratings. Fair, strong and steady winds my sailing friends! Captain Qwiksword SV Gratitude

Physician here, the lack of adequate respiratory protection on your painter is heartbreaking. Regarding the electrical system, I wonder if 1400W is enough? I’d at least consider building in a mounting system for some removable panels on the foredeck and/or gunnels for becalmed days. You’re lucky to be doing all this from the ground up. Very excited to see what comes next!

your assertion that Lithium batteries are much more expensive than lead acid is not so true any more. I think I could replace my 200amp hours of lead acid which cost me $1000 CAD with 200amp hours of lithium for very close to the same price now. In fact my guess is that lead acid has gone up if anything. Good deep cycle lead acid is expensive. Lithium batteries even rated the same have about double the usable energy as well. Lead acid are good for starter batteries still, but not much else.

You're right The sun doesn't always shine and the wind doesn't always blow but as long as you avoid the doldrums you can count on some kind of wind. And even if it is cloudy your solar panel still produce small amounts of energy so unless you're in the horse latitudes near the equator or near the Arctic circle you're going to get some kind of wind generally it might be calm for periods of time as in half a day but the wind generally does pick back up again you don't just sit off the coast of Bermuda and have a calm windless day for a week that doesn't happen and even if that does happen you just drop your dingy tie to the boat and you row your ass out of the area yeah it would take a while but it can be done that's what they have always done. If they can row on 120,000 lb trade ship out of the doldrums with a bunch of dinghies then you can do the same with your 30-45ft sailing yacht

Don’t make it electric. It’s will be more expensive, less reliable, less powerful, less safe. One lightning strike and poof everything is gone! You will not save the planet this way, the difference is minuscule. You could have a four stroke outboard that you use for the dinghy and main boat and sail most of the time. Still I am a big fan of solar, lithium, induction cooktop for a boat, but would not go that way for propulsion at the moment.
