Lead Acid batteries work through chemical reaction. Cold weather means less reaction. So a cold battery is a dead battery. It charges slower and gives out less energy in cold weather. A warm battery is a happy battery. Warm it up and charge it. If the engine bay doesn't get warm enough while driving then you need to keep a jump pack on you. Also a CC/CV style trickle charger to keep it topped off when it sits for any period of time in cold weather would make sure its ready to go when you need it.

From a electrical point of view, it's more important to have the black attached first. Then all the components have a common reference point when they power up. You put the red (+) on first so you can connect the black (-) to the chassis - away from the battery. Lead acid batteries give off hydrogen gas. The spark from connecting to the battery can ignite the gas if enough is there to ignite. Safety precaution. If you connect the black to the battery, you are defeating the purpose.
