I am new to surf fishing in general (although a life long fisherman mostly freshwater everywhere from my home state of Florida to Alaska). After catching a nearly 6-foot pregnant Blacktip Shark on a cheaper $70 spinning combo on 30-pound mono back in May I fell in love with the thrill and I am now hooked (pun intended) so upon your suggestion, I purchased the Penn Spinfisher VI 10500 and not being able to get the Ugly Stick Bigwater I chose a 12 foot Offshore Angler Breakwater Surf Spinning Rod. I plan on spooling it with an 85 or 100-pound braid. Thanks again for the guidance, now I feel confident that my Surf Shark Fishing Set-up will be capable of handling even larger sharks here Northeast Florida (Atlantic).

Nice setup, but you should have put the braid on first and the mono second due to the monofilament's abrasion resistance.

Yeah idk why anyone would use that much for backing. That's even a lot of mono for a topshot. Normally mono backing would be just enough to cover the spool so that the braid has something to hold onto and not slip.

For years I've used a strip of duct tape( gorilla tape) on the spool so the braid has something to bite and once you have the wrap or two a couple small patches of it over that and just fill it with braid. Never slips, never causes corrosion and you will much braid on. Shops will use a heavy wax to do the same thing.

Lucien Bonvouloir if you want protection from long runs, especially since he is land-based on the beach, spool it with straight braid. The only issue with using a 15’ rod is that the shark has A LOT of leverage, if you’re surf casting, obviously the longer length helps with casting distance, however with a little practice, a 12’ rod will serve you well and your back will thank you for it
@Bsprecksfishing6 жыл бұрын
That is true, but that means I have a lot of leverage over it as well, and if I lean back and use my weight it works in my favor. But yes that's rough on the back
@kevinhouchins36416 жыл бұрын
That’s not quite the way physics works. The sharks has all the leverage, your upper hand is acting as the fulcrum point and the butt of your rod is your “tug” end. You basically have around 3’ of the rod and the shark has the rest. Have you caught anything on the outfit yet? I had that rod and returned it after catching a decent size blacktip. I tried it because of the extra casting distance that I thought I would get but truthfully the difference between it and a 12’ is negligible. The amount of strain that the longer rod caused was ridiculous, if I was new to shark fishing and this was the first rod that I had used, it would have turned my against shark fishing
@Bsprecksfishing6 жыл бұрын
Kevin Houchins yeah I guess you right about the leverage, but leaning back and using gravity on my side always works. I have caught a few sharks but no not from this 15 foot... on Long Island all we get from the surf are 200lb sand tigers and 80lb browns, both of which take relatively little muscle to defeat. I wouldn’t go after hammerheads in Florida with this spinning setup lol.. Where do you live/fish

I would of went braid backing( reel is braid compatible )... so the mono gets used more and you can just replace the mono, much cheaper then replacing powerpro. also mono has the stretch needed on the big fish ( less leader needed then ). Then some 100+lb leader, 200+lb wire trace to a circle hook.
@Bsprecksfishing6 жыл бұрын
If i was using a conventional reel I would do that. However, I intend to use the rod to cast the bait out, and using mono as the main line would drastically reduce my casting distance.

Nice. I'm in Hawaii & ordered a new Fenwick Seahawk Surf Rod for spinners from WA. 16.5ft. For a Stingray i just left the butt plug in a fixed position & used my tips of my toes to steady it. Horsed in a +30lb Ray. This type of rod is popular for Europeans carpers. I put a Shimano Ultegra 14000 on it same as the carpers use. Length does matter when casting but a shorter rod can pump a big fish in easier. I like 12ft with a SS butt cap, or a 13'3" casting rod. There are strong 12ft surf casting rods out there like the Mojo Surf heavy. Also Blackhole has some impressive 12ft casters that are on KZbin for casting +700ft. I like the energy you put into your video. Great job.

Shimano's Ultegra spinners uses a line layering oscillation system that compacts the line lay on the spool. This means you can cast far. I use the Ultegra 5500 for Trevally & Bonefish, the 10K for Trevally & Rays, and the monster 14K for really big boys. On the 14K i have braid backing for high line capacity & 100m of mono 50lb topshot since i slide cast using this (also in coral areas it's better to use as braid would snap instantly if cut under pressure). I got my Matt Black 14K from Europe over a year ago where it's popular for large carp because it's a distance casting spinner. Now it's available in the States. 44lb max drag.

Hear me out, 6 pound mono for backing, extremely short just to cover where u tie the line to and keep ur line from slipping. Tie that to 65 braid and spool it up about 80 percent of the way that’s probably 1000 or more yards of line then do a short topshot of ur 50 pound mono all the way to the end of the spool, end up with over 1000 yrds of line that is still heavy enough for everything. Not saying what u did is wrong, im just saying u can get more line out of it

Great video, the Australians have figured out how to get your bait far out. The Australians, use a technique called slide lining. A couple things: 1) If you are a big guy, you may be able to handle a 15' rod, but for the most part average guy only needs a 12' foot rod - max. As per the leverage thing - when it is bent over it is no longer 15'.... 2) Braid, is a no - no for casting large spinning reels like that heaving that kind of weight. A loop comes off that reel and wraps a finger - it will take it off! You will tear the piss out of your finger tip casting that thing with that kind of weight - 1 oz is too much weight on your finger for Braid and long casts. 3) Not to mention how dangerous it is for others around you casting that kind of weight and bait on Braided line with zero stretch. Back the reel with your Braid and top it off with the Mono - you really need the stretch in Mono for casting that kind of weight. You need a shock leader when you throw that kind of weight. I have a couple of Bro's who fish for sharks from shore with that reel - it's a Hoss. They run them on 6 - 7 foot beef sticks and balloon with them. They will run 2 to 3 feet of stranded wire with a big hook and bait under two balloons. Deploy on an outgoing tide from an inlet and let the wash take it out - deadly! I do the same thing with a TLD-20. One other thought about setting up a reel the way you are thinking. Mono backing can be cut, or fouled, by the braid on the spool when you get down close to the splice on a big fish and heavy a drag setting, because the Braid will dig into the Mono backing. Braid and Mono both have their place. Go Easy Bro,
@Bsprecksfishing6 жыл бұрын
In hindsight I agree with everything you said, especially the part about the 15' rod being too long. (My creation here was kind of a fail) However what do you mean you cant use braid when casting more than an ounce? In the northeast we surf fish with 2 to 4 ounce plugs (lures). We launch them 200 yards thanks to braid, and make 400 casts in a session. No one would think of using anything other than braid for this. Did you mean something else?
@RworldKM6 жыл бұрын
Quick question; what other purpose does the backing mono line serve other than to give the braided line more grip? Your reel already has a rubber tube at the centre that can give the braided line more grip. Also, why spool the mono backing halfway through the reel instead of just enough to cover the whole reel spool and back the braided line that way?
@Bsprecksfishing6 жыл бұрын
Like I said in the video, I only had 300 yards of braid, when the spool would hold 1000 yards of it. I used the backing to fill it up before I put the braid on.

Why didn't you just fill the whole spool with braid? I use the same reel, but have approx 250yds of braid backing (65lbs) and a 150yd of 70lbs topshot. Casting is still quite good and I don't need to worry about abbrasion as much as I would with braid. I don't now if you have used it yet, but I fear the 50lbs won't hold up if you get a bigger shark. BTW, over here in Europe you can get even longer rods (Shimano, SPRO, Shakespeare produce them), up to 5 meters (16ft). But if you do not need the distance, they are useless. I use a 13 and 14ft rods and they do the job nicely.

Why are you backing a reel with mono that you got specifically bought for it's line capacity? Also, your arbor knot needs tape (underneath the knot) and also a better knot imo. (In my opinion) if you just upsize your braid you can get the most out of that drag and line capacity. Minimum I'd do would be 65lb to a maximum of 80lb hollow core braid and run a top-shot/shock leader of 40-60lb mono that way you have some type of stretch/give for heavy hard casts.

What are the pro's and con's of even having mono backing. I would think its cheaper to use mono, but you also can't have as much line on. Also spools often are limited in yardage, but at a tackle store, they often have massive rolls of line. i understand mono has stretch as well, but the 300 yards of braid would eliminate this for the most part. And that's the purpose of the mono leader on a sharking rig. At this point, I'm just spilling out thoughts, and I'd like to hear yours.
@Bsprecksfishing6 жыл бұрын
I mainly just used mono backing so I'd only have to buy 300 yards of braid, instead of filling the whole spool with 700 yards of braid
@Tracetidwellusmc6 жыл бұрын
This might be a good big game rod/small shark real combo, but if you hook a hammer, you might get spooled pretty fast.
@Bsprecksfishing6 жыл бұрын

Can you explain the reason for backing? Very good video! I just got a spinfisher 8500 and loaded it up with 65lb power pro brain but no backing.
@Bsprecksfishing6 жыл бұрын
bc it holds 670 yards of 65lb braid, and I didn't want to buy all that. thanks for watching!

I use the 10500svv as well, and it is loaded with braid backing (for line capacity) and a 100yd mono topshot since I fish very rocky beaches and need the abbrasion resistance. Just a tip: powerpro is expensive, have a look at kastking braid (it's an american based company, but have a production line in china). They make excellent 8strand braid which has landed many, many sharks, including some big hammers. Give it a try, it's sold at a fraction of the cost of powerpro and shipping is often free.
@AndyEmerson86 жыл бұрын
Thomas S thanks a lot. I have the 6500 and put on 300 yards or so of 50 lb power pro braid and recently lost a big chunk of line. Maybe 100 yards. I was wondering if I can just tie on more braid or what the suggestion would be to bring my line back up to capacity without replacing all the line.
@thomass81186 жыл бұрын
If you know how to properly tie braid to braid, it's a chance you could take, BUT, a knot will (almost) always be a weak link in your 'chain'. I landed a 9ft tiger on spinning gear which had two pieces of braid tied together, the knot was off the spool most of the fight and all went well. Have a look at the line I mentioned before, compare it's price to powerpro and see what looks best to you ;). Fishing if often about 'trusting' your gear.

Maybe you can answer my question I have several rigs just like you built. I have braid on first as my backing with mono on last . Can you explain line use or why even have a different backing . A corpus Christi shop lined mine and the only explanation I got was thats the way it's done .. But why is it done that way
@Bsprecksfishing5 жыл бұрын
I used the mono backing simply to fill up the spool halfway because I had a limited amount of braid. I wanted my mainline to be braid because I can cast that further and that wont be dragged by the surf as easy. I would put a 15 foot mono leader attached to 3 feet of wire leader before the hook.
@saltwaterrook46386 жыл бұрын
I don't know where you fish, but good luck muscling a 200+lb shark over a sand bar with that rod and a spinning reel. Great for casting though. My current setup for small sharks is an 11' Tica with a Daiwa BG 8000. With 50lb braid and 80lb mono topshot it works decent enough for small guys.

Your reel has less than half his drag.
@saltwaterrook46386 жыл бұрын
@@lachlanoneil8938 Notice I said "my setup for small sharks". Thanks for showing you don't know anything about fishing. Drag is a very small portion of the overall formula. Conventional reels utilize available drag better by design. They put more torque on the fish. I promise you my Penn 9/0 will haul in bigger fish than that spinner. Quit reading boxes and learn some mechanic principals. By the way my shark setups are all custom rods I've built. My reels are a Penn International 80w, an Avet JX Raptor, and my Penn Senator 9/0 with stainless gear set and drag upgrade. I kayak shark baits out. Our sharks get up over 1000lbs. Greater Hammer Heads. Throw in some 11' bulls too. My big shark reels are running Jerry Brown 130lb Hollow Core, 125lb topshots, 600lb mono leaders and 700lb coated cable traces. Hooks range from 20/0 to 28/0. It costs me more to spool one with line than most people have in all their equipment. My spinning rigs are a BG 8000, Slammer III 8500 and 6500, and I'm still rocking my first surf kit. A penn fierce II 6500 on a 9' Penn Fierce Rod. I can cast every one of these to the the third bar or the third gut at a minimum. What's your shark setup?

in south africa we are using the penn slammer 3 8000/10000size reel or shimano saragosa 20000 or daiwa saltist 8000 paired with either a local brand assasin horizon 15ft/daiwa saltist 15ft spin/okuma makira with 50/80 pound braid 8x and a 50pound backing braid 4x dyneema. some guys use mono just for the initial backing to prevent braid slippage. generally most modern reels are braid ready. braid leader is 80 to 120pound. 7-9oz sinker. shark/skate fishing is huge here and big brand tackle guys come here to test new tackle and design special tackles foe the south african market.

12' Mojo Surf, Daiwa Saltiga Ballistic Surf, and Ocean Masters are rated above 10oz. Ditch that 15' rod - I am sure there is a ton of slop in that blank. Why are you backing with 50lb mono? Your reel has a braid ready spool. You should be running braid right to the spool, then running mono as your main line, tied to a shock leader, and then you tie that to wire leader/200lb mono that is attached to your hook. Are you casting this set up or kayaking out a bait?
@lachlanoneil89385 жыл бұрын
He is obviously casting but also if he bought that much braid it cost more than his whole rig unless he bought eBay braid like kastking, I buy kastking and it is as good as other 4x braids from top brands.

Really enjoyed the video....two comments please...why not use an FC or GT knot?...stronger and better to tie on braid to mono....and please show people how to spool up a reel using a spooling bar with the line spool spinning and going on under pressure ...how you put it on will lead to twists in the mono....and the braid was so slack and twisted too....any pressure from a shark will make the braid cut deep in to itself and cause damage...I promise you it's not enough to tension using a sock over your hand...thanks again for the vid...happy hunting folks..

@wazerkus-93936 жыл бұрын
It would be waaay stout.. and cutting that much off of a blank built for that length changes it's entire dynamic . 15ft rods are great but you come out equal on the cons verses the pros unless they are top end. You will get your most optimal cast with an 11-12ft. Yes, Barrett rods are awesome, I have 3 of them, I have also seen him build 15ft lamiglas surf rods for LBSF as well. St Croix also makes an excellent 11-12ft surf rods rated for casting chunks of bait with a decently heavy weight.
@josephryan15765 жыл бұрын
