World building (in table top) is not only inviting the reader to fill in the gaps, but to build off of those gaps and make their own stories. Sure Tolkien never talked about day to day maintenance of Isengard, but you could build an entire tabletop story around a crew of monsters that have to clean up dungeons. I should write that down…

You HAVE written that down just here 😂 but I encourage you to give it more care and attention. Have you heard of that game "Viscera Cleanup Detail"? Might be a good reference!

That's why I always like fantasy kitchen sinks, a grab bag of ideas that can tell multiple stories. Which is why I'm writing science-fantasy.

It's great to see a video aimed at people who are truly starting a worldbuilding project from scratch, and I like your approach here, particularly the emphasis on starting with a core emotion. Personally, I also like to have some adjective or noun you could slap "punk" or "core" on the end of, an aesthetic. For me inspiration is like a constellation, the more stars I start with the more quickly I can draw the lines that make a complete picture. I do worry that a novice worldbuilder hungry for inspiration and instruction might get lost in the first 4-5 minutes of the video, which took a while to wrap back around to the thesis. If that actually *is* an issue then you'll probably see it in the "key moments for audience retention" analytics.

I like the aesthetic approach with the 'core' words too - hey, I might even make a video about that at some point. Thanks for the nudge with the first 4-5 mins, in the end this video didn't perform particularly well, perhaps there's a lesson here for me.

The toaster was by far my favourite character, like the boys Samwise Gamgee to his Frodo. Only having the one word reminded me of house cats and dogs can only make a limited range of sounds but the tone and intonation makes an entire world of meaning behind their loving voices. Excellent job.

0:40 Funnily enough I had a period where everytime I baked I'd come up with a creation myth based on the ingredients and methods used😂 "In the beginning there was a bowl. It was empty and white. Then six islands of gold appeared in a translucent sea. A mountain of white rocks covered them and a great beast with a mighty roar and spiraling legs churned it all into a thick paste. Then it snowed for eight days and nights until all the land was covered in a new, softer mountain of white. Another drizzle of snow, followed six drizzles of earth, briefly bringing colour to the world before the great beast returned and churned it all into paste once more...." I don't remember all the steps, but it made baking quite hilarious🤣

I'll be honest, I just do worldbuilding for fun. Can't write for shit lol, so very little of this is applicable, but interesting, you're a good presenter.

I got the vibe ❤😂 that was really cute story indeed I always struggle to finish my writing since i am usually stuck in the worldbuilding, i want to convey something grandiose, a life time journey, a detailed world (like avatar the last airbender or one piece), but its hard to think about everything and not get too cliché

I was creating a magic system for game mechanics, then I tripped and fell into creating an entire world. Not to justify it or anything, the world simply unfolded where the metaphysics exist. The funny part is I don't usually DO world building. Not experienced in maps and civilizations and characters and all that. Never had much of that itch. Just had fun tinkering with game mechanics. And yet... if I don't give it life properly I'll never be satisfied. It just has too much potential to leave to rot. And besides, I'm having fun.😊

Fantasy setting? Create dictionaries of cultures and analyze their alphabet use. Those with the same most common alphabet use share the same genetic and linguistic majority influence.

Maybe this can work - maybe that's your style! And you go run with it, I support and encourage you. But this video is about a very different approach :) the type of brain I have over my shoulders would never be able to create an interesting narrative based on something like you mentioned. Gladly, those approaches are not excludent. You can do you, and I can do me. But, in this channel, I can't help but to promote the approaches that work for me - those are the only ones I can fully explain and explore.

@@JoriamRamos thats the thing. You add the fantasy elements. You add the words that describe them to the language, and you get a timeline of word development. For tolkien elvish the eldar forest is destroyed by volcano putting their forest in mordor. While there they developed astronomy. So saurons tower was an eldar astronomical observatory. Elves dont have a word for hair until sauron resides in mordor so they were originally hairless alien looking giant slender elves.
