Hey all! I've received some comments citing that three specific lines that I put in my map (all towards the end of the video) are NOT planned as Metro lines, but instead more likely as bus rapid transit. - Campbelltown to Wollongong - Northern Beaches - Liverpool to Western Sydney Airport Now, the source I used to include these three lines was not very clear that these lines are not planned as Metro lines, which is why I included them. However, upon second look I have deduced that these lines do indeed appear to be planned as bus rapid transit, not Metro. I'd like to apologise over this inaccuracy; I'll do better research next time, as I would sincerely like to set a precedent for thorough research on this channel. Indeed, as many have pointed out, a Metro seems unlikely in many of the corridors I've included, let alone by 2056. But this video exists to list ALL of the government's proposals regardless of their feasibility or likelihood of construction. Do I actually believe the network would look like this in 2056? God I wish 😆. (Let's hope that as many of them are built as possible, though! I try to hope...) I'll discuss actual feasibility in a future video. Thanks for watching!
@marcopolo51572 жыл бұрын
Incredible work nonetheless, I think 2056 is a long way off. Plans change and some get fast tracked depending on demand and which urban precincts are growing faster. I remember years ago before metro was even a thing in Sydney, there were plans to extend Bondis heavy rail to Bondi Beach. Although costs for tunneling then were prohibitive. Fast forward a few decades and its now feasible to tunnel in most circumstances. I'm sure the costs of tunnel boring will continue to drop further. I would be surprised if many of these eastern suburb projects aren't accelerated by the mid 2030s. Sydney is growing fast and set to reach over 7 million sometime by the late 2030s. With a projected 6.1M by 2030. Currently sitting on 5.3M to 5.5M depending on who you ask on a good day ^^. By the way have you heard of Transport Vlog and Big Jaydog Adventures? Both offer their own brand of intel on the changing face of Sydney. One focuses on deep analysis of current metro construction, while the other are more drone recordings for a birds eye view on construction sites, especially for Parramatta and the Sydney CBD. Both quite insightful in their own way. By the way amazing content, you got yourself a fan. Just wondering what software you used for this, it looks so well done! Keep up the good work. I would like to see more of a future planned public transport expose on other Australian cities in future. Like Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. Look forward to your next instalment. Cheers.

Quite a lot was constructed, but it was canned halfway through. There could be quite a case for it to be used for a metro line, or at least an intercity train service.

I likely your video series. I have also come across several video series, but they have a strong North American focus, so nice to have an Australian series. Sydney's population has grown from 4.39 million in 2011 to 5.36 million in 2021. London's population in 2021 was 9 million. If Sydney isn't to end up like Los Angeles with their traffic problems, then there is only one solution, more public transport. In 1991, Sydney had a population of 3.67 million, and in 2001, Sydney had a population of 3.95 million. As you can see, Sydney no longer has the luxury of not building more Metro/Train lines. Doing nothing will be political suicide; NSW Labor has learnt that the hard way. The driverless Metro system offers some key benefits over other systems; the most important one is rapid transport running at around 62 km/h (this includes station stops). The Metro systems encourage transit-oriented development. You can already see this at Tallowood, Rouse Hill, Norwest, Hills Showground, Castle Hill and Macquarie Park. The most significant change is probably Hills Showground; it has gone from your traditional suburb development to well on its way to a transit-oriented one. With Norwest and Macquarie Park are turning into a combination of business enterprise and high-rise development mixed into together. I believe that Transport for NSW is adopting the London model. The Heavy Rail will act the same way as the London Overground, and the Metro will act the same way as the London Tube. The Metro will provide Sydney with cross-town links. I also believe that the Light Rail/Trackless Trams will play a key role around Parramatta CBD and Sydney CBD. The Light Rail/Trackless Trams can key bus routes with high capacity levels. Sydney is going with a model with larger gaps between the Metro stations and using buses and the Light Rail to fill the gaps between stations. You can see that model with the North West Metro already.

You're right; I never thought of our system like the Overground/Underground, but it certainly does seem similar. I do very much hope our system gets built to this extent, or at least a similar one, although I must confess I fear it is too optimistic. At least the government has bold plans, and a proper vision; it remains to be seen if they'll do what's needed to realise that vision.

Personally, I reckon the extensions for the existing 3 metro lines should be the priority before the other new lines go ahead. These extensions being: Tallawong to St Mary’s (to provide the missing link from northwest Sydney to Western Sydney Airport); Westmead to WSA (to provide the direct missing link from both the Sydney and Parramatta CBDs to the new airport); and Bankstown to Liverpool (to provide a faster link between Liverpool and the Sydney CBD). Once these critical extensions are built, they will complete the basic skeletal structure of the Sydney Metro map, and from there new lines and other extensions can be built. This would be the most logical way to do it in my opinion.

It would have been better to build the city Western Metro station under St James, a far more cost effective, shorter and straighter route to Pyrmont and no buildings to demolish. The new City Station here could could also provide a cost free Northern Beaches terminus. Then it could proceed under the Domain via a hard rock tunnel under the harbour, to North Sydney (little Walker St/Arthur St) an underground people mover to Victoria Cross then to the Northern Beaches with stations at Neutral Bay, Mosman, Medusa St, a bridge 45 Metres over the Spit to stations at Seaforth, Manly Vale, Brookvale, Dee Why, Collaroy Plateau, Narrabeen, Warriewood and Mona Vale. Good video. The timelines set out by planners are ridiculously long though. Boring a 10km tunnel can take as little as few months, a lot easier because of the narrow breadth of metro trains, and if you have multiple TBMs running at the same time then they can be dropped into the empty station boxes (where the stations will be built) and be tunnelling simultaneously. Most of these lines could be up and running by 2035 latest if the process was streamlined. And while the initial capital cost is fairly significant (though not enormous as TBMs are surprisingly inexpensive to maintain), the running costs of automated metro are extremely low.

The only proposed line that should be a priority is Kogarah to Macquarie Park via Olympic Park. It will save a lot of time for people from the south to get to west and north west Sydney including employment hubs of Paramatta/Westmead and the technology parks at Macquarie Park, without having to go via Central or Redfern saving about 20 minutes.

Interesting a few notes 1. I think the Kogerah to Macquarie park and Norwest should interchange at Revesby instead of Kingsgrove since Kingsgrove isn’t served by the Macarthur trains and would complicate things if it did. 2. The Leppington line shouldn’t be converted to Metro because it will delay the Melbourne XPT since it borrows the T2 line at Glenfield to overtake the T8 Airport train otherwise it would get stuck behind it so instead they should extend the heavy rail line from Leppington to the new Airport.

I had no idea so much was planned or proposed! I would love to see it done and Sydney is going to need it, but it has one massive hurdle... The New South Wales State Government both the coalition or Labour don't have a good track record for major infrastructure projects like this for example the second airport should have been built years ago, the only time they seemed to get things done was leading up to the Sydney Olympics Great video very interesting 👍

Amazing to hear an update of plans for northern beaches. With all of the political influence that area has had in recent decades you'd expect that some move had been made on Bradfield's century old original plans.
@kcobley2 жыл бұрын
The original Bradfield reservations have been built over, it would be extremely costly to buy the 4 buildings needed, one has only been completed in the last 12 months. It's too hard at this time to build new station platforms under Town Hall Station infrastructure. I've had a serious look at tunnels, which either have to run inside/outside or well under road/rail tunnels. Metro trains can climb 4.5m per hundred metres, Sydney trains is more like 3m per hundred, means Sydney Trains stock has to run across the Bridge. Any new tunnel under the harbour would have to commence at St James to achieve the required depth to build in hard rock under the harbour on the eastern side of the bridge, the Station at North Sydney would have to adjoin the Freeway at Arthur St to be low enough to reach deep hard rock under the harbour 90m.
@robman20952 жыл бұрын
Northern Beaches will remain isolated both by rail and road into the indefinite future. At least planning for the road tunnel connection to Warringah Expressway has I think progressed somewhat. When Labor replaces the current state government everything will grind to a halt again. On the bright side at least that means the northern Beaches will retain its unique character for a few decades longer.

Yea i can't see the locals accepting a rail line to the beaches.
@kcobley2 жыл бұрын
@@Blueeey The cost of the proposed 6 lane Beaches Road could be more than double the cost of a Metro purely because a Metro only occupies the space of 2 lanes, also tunnel construction is much simple and quicker with modern TBM machines whereas very expensive road header machines will be needed for the road. A road lane is only capable of carrying around 1200 cars per hour per lane at 60 kph, or 3,600 cars per hour perhaps 5000 people. A metro can carry 36,000 per hour at an average speed of 80 kph. A road at twice the cost that carries 1/7 the number of passengers, it's clear the road is a really stupid idea.

Track work has well advanced to near completion, the track is already being used to run flatcars of construction supplies to the new underground stations, I'm told that possibly late September a test train may be running from Chatswood to Sydenham, catenary still has some way to go so this test train may be a battery shunter or a diesel. Work is well advanced on all locations, a bit slower at Central and Martin Place but still ahead of timetable. The Bankstown line will have to shut down for a few months to move rail into precise location, the trains will stop on a straight section of track, Installation of the Platform based Mechanical Gap Fillers (MGFs) are to be used to bridge the gap between the train and platform to make a seamless walk on to the train.

Some very interesting extensions and link ups mentioned within the future Metro plans...will be very interesting to see if future Governments hold on to these plans...or shelve them in the too hard or too costly basket...as they invariably do...but to aid Sydney's growth and expansion...the rail system has to move outwards to cater for these already busy area's where the roads infrastructure is poorly lacking...the Northern Rd upgrade from Penrith to Narellan recently completed will be outdated by the time the WSA opens in 2026...the Government need not just visions for well beyond the completion date/s of upcoming projects...but action to build them to allow for growth contingencies...why build two lanes when a third constructed at the same time will be cheaper than in the future...and show that they mean business of opening up the outer areas of Sydney, but with the infrastructure to match. Great video as always Sharath...looking forward to many more 😁😁😁😁

Any North-South linking line East of Parramatta would be ideal, though I suspect they are always going to first add new lines to areas that have no train coverage at all. Part of the issue with Sydney's system is, unlike the great metros/subways of the world, there are very few loops available in the middle of the geographic area, so you are typically limited to the scope of your current rail line with few cross-connections, on large trains that run every 15 or more minutes. Going East-West (i.e. heading to/from the CBD) is relatively straightforward, but North-South typically requires travelling very long distances to make connections to far-off lines. For all such trips like these through the middle of Sydney, you either have to route through Central and head back out, or transit to Glenfield/Liverpool/Parramatta and change for the T2/T5. For example trips like Revesby-Strathfield (car 17 mins, train 80 mins), Kingsgrove-Parramatta (car 30 mins, train 70 minutes), Oatley-Olympic Park (car 29 mins, train 81 mins), Burwood-Chatswood (car 25 mins, train 50 mins). You'll never remove cars from this route without more central N-S lines.

However much I want to see this, I wish it wasn't all planned as metro and some heavy rail is planned as well. Like instead of the southwest rail link being converted, we have the metro run down to Macsrthur and extend heavy rail from leppington to WSA, same with other places in the east where it is more beneficial to extend the rail network from Bondi junction instead of creating a new line
@BuildingBeautifully2 жыл бұрын
That's fair. Our government seems very keen on metro, and I guess that makes sense, since it's faster and driverless. I doubt there will be a return to heavy rail over rapid transit, but the argument certainly could probably be made for either one over the other.
@raph69312 жыл бұрын
@@BuildingBeautifully Our Govt is keen on Metro because it's privatised, and the company that runs it is the MTR, a property developer that does public transport as a side hustle. Metro has benefits over Heavy Rail, but the reason why Metro is pushed so much has nothing to do with its benefits, which is why stupid projects like the SWRL conversion get suggested. It's merely a means of privatising the network and giving it away to property developers
@tonyhworks2 жыл бұрын
@@raph6931 No, that's not the reason. The reason is that Sydney's population is projected to grow to 8 million and beyond and the capacity of the suburban system is already strained to its limits at 5 million. Metro offers nearly twice the capacity, quicker journeys and the convenience of stopping at all stations, which means everybody gets better access to services.
@raph69312 жыл бұрын
@@tonyhworks so why are they putting metro out to the western Sydney airport on an alignment that is projected to serve less people than the average Sydney bus route for its first 20 years of operation? Is it because a metro is needed for that route, or do you think maybe it's because there will be property developments out there and those developers (the MTR) want to operate the line? And what about the Bankstown line, do you think the planned developments along the line have anything to do with it? Not to mention the line will have less capacity as a metro than it did as heavy rail, and the Govt has no plans to run it at metro frequencies. Meanwhile, the T4 and T8 are being upgraded to run heavy rail at metro frequencies, and AREN'T being converted to metro. Surprise surprise, the MTR isn't building developments along those lines
@tonyhworks2 жыл бұрын
@@raph6931 Because of population growth, there is a need for the greater rail capacity offered by metro to enable more housing and business development by many developers along these corridors so that more people have somewhere to live and work. The suburban system simply doesn't have the capacity. The Bankstown line is going to be run at the same opening frequency as the rest of that metro line - 4 minutes in peaks, 10 minutes off peak. This is significantly more capacity than the present suburban service offers.

I doubt that I will see the 2056 Metro extensions, unless I actually make it to 104 years old!!! LOL. I am rather surprised that they don't just extend the Randwick/Kingsford light rail line to La Perouse, following the original tram route, on reserved track along the centre of the road. light rail there may be a cheaper option and the line also could even be opened well before 2056. If Kristina Keneally and her sorry lot had won the 2011 election there would have been a raft of recycled rail promises and still none delivered. No rail project will be perfect for everyone but at least the current mob are doing something and it's not a promise, the first line is built and the other three are now under construction. The problem with governments that don't deliver is that the next government has to play catch-up before progress can be made. Our problem going ahead is not related to a lack of money but a lack of labour. There are so many large projects that the NSW Government is undertaking that there are no tradesmen available for the next jobs and this will hold things up a bit, which is why the Beaches Link tunnels will not begin until the Western Harbour Tunnel is about half complete and the F6 tunnels (stage one) is complete. Do remember that if Labor wins the next election, Chris Minns has promised to do what Chairman Dan did in Melbourne and scrap the Beaches Link tunnels entirely. At least it is only postponed for now. Labor just isn't good at building things and I am just grateful that jobs like WestConnex and NorthConnex have been getting done because under Labor we would never have got them either.
@marcopolo51572 жыл бұрын
Because before the eastern extension of the Sydney west metro line can begin tunnelling the Hunter St section must be completed and operational. So that's not until 2030 give them 2 years or so to prepare all the logistical requirements and machinery to start phase 2. My guess is 2033 start for the eastern suburbs section and a 2041 finish. This is enough time for tunnel boring to complete the entire length of Hunter St to La Perouse and the building of another 7 or so stations. So it's not too inefficient for a small nation like Australia. Meanwhile fast rail might also see a debut by this time. Sydney to Newcastle
