The design is similar to Athens Int’l, which is 21 years old. The main differences are: Athens was built with 2 parallel runways from the beginning, Athens has a satellite terminal. Both airports can easily be expanded which is good. Feels like Sydney is finally joining the 21st century with regards to airport design. I think this new airport will be more popular than what the planners realize.

As Sydney's second airport, and with more space to play with, they could build a more modern airport. Sydney Airport doesn't have a lot of space to play with, unless they filled in more of Botany Bay. That might upset a few people though.

Great clip. I'm all jealous now. A few random comments: - You have probably heard that WSI will not have a control tower, but multiple cameras (including in infra red) that will display like a virtual control tower at a facility in Eastern Creek. - It's a little harder to do 'virtual' crash fire rescue, so there appears to be a large concrete pad for the first runway fire station on the western side of the runway, near its centre and beside a big rectangular pond. - The Elizabeth Drive bridge over the M12 and rail underpasses at the northern end of the airport is about to open. - The Elizabeth Drive rail underpass has tons of room for four tracks - That combined with spare space along the eastern side of the W S Airport Metro line through the airport are probably to provide a corridor for a later second line (to/from Westmead?). - Given the passenger flow, cross platform transfers would not be needed within the airport. - As I won't be around by then, I can safely speculate the Airport Line will link to Glenfield, and the later line will run to Narellan and Macarthur (with cross platform exchange before lines split around Bringelly - and possibly with the Airport line splitting to do both destinations initially). - I wonder how transfers between flights at different terminals will be done, once they are constructed - perhaps transfer buses airside (like at some major Australian airports), or a 'people mover' connecting terminals inside their secure areas (like at some major US airports)? - I'm 'sowing seeds' wherever possible that WSI is NOT Sydney's second (or third) airport at all, but is Western Sydney's own international airport. Seperate identity, different market mix, more flexible, cheaper operation and run by more pragmatic locals - It's all the more reason why people in the (more populous and productive) West will rarely want/need to go into dear old Harbour Sydney, except as an occasional tourist - Even Tay Tay preferred going West for her venues and zoo visits. Just saying.
@becsterbrisbane62756 ай бұрын
In relation to the transfers, I would say it would operate not dissimilar to Pudong & Hongqiao Airports in Shanghai (both on opposite sides of the city).I believe they have a mix of airlines, but set routes only go to 1 specific airport, and the budget airlines go to Hongqiao.Hongqiao takes less international if I recall my time there, Pudong still doing the heavy lifting for international flights. I reckon Wellcamp Airport here in Brisbane will be similar again, both Badgery's Creek & Wellcamp being a good 2 hours from current airports.

@JaborWithaY6 ай бұрын
Crossing runways are expensive to build and take up an enormous amount of land area, and you can only use one at a time anyway. They generally don't get built unless the airport is expecting a lot of smaller private planes (which can't handle crosswinds very well and don't need a particularly long runway to land on) or the location has highly variable weather conditions that justify it. They're starting at one runway that points northeast (into Sydney's prevailing winds), and will add another one in the same direction when it's justified by the amount of traffic.

Can't wait for this, 24 hours per day will be good for the airlines. If connecting passengers are late getting into Dubai they have to leave them behind to beat the curfew into Sydney. This has happened. One Emirates flight leaves Heathrow for Dubai & about the same time a flight leaves Manchester. They all join the same flight to Sydney. Once the Manchester flight was late getting in & about 50 people had to wait 9 hours in Dubai. A few chose to get on a flight to Sydney via Singapore but took longer. I live in Glenmore Park so I already get aircraft noise so I have no issue with more. Also, every new plane that comes on the market is quieter. @@chrispekel5709 Looks like my first response was censored. …OK. This airport was Tony Abbotts’ gift to Western Sydney that will subject ostensibly Labor electorates to the north and northeast to aircraft noise 24/7. I’m about 200m from a proposed flight path and it looks like I won’t qualify for any noise insulation. All I ask is for some consideration during the night so as not to be subjected to aircraft noise then. As I said in my initial response, please go and live under a flight path for a year close to an airport which is active 24/7 and report back. Maybe you’d even like to buy a house/apartment under the flight path?

@@jamesroseby3823 I did in Melbourne. You're far enough away (they won't build close to the airport because it is 24/7) and the number of planes coming in late substantially drops off. Basically, you don't even notice it after a while. If you don't like, it move. I'll bet a thousand dollars you're still there in 10 years and don't even notice the planes. People always complain about new roads or developments and then get used to it

The airport is very vulnerable. The aviation jet fuel is being TRUCKED from Notany or Clyde. One accident on the M4 or in the suburban streets can close the airport. On top of this an accident can result in deaths, disruption to the economy and more. Why this multi billion $$$ project doesn't pipeline the fuel is beyond me. The mayors in suburbs along the route take note. You will have B doubles travelling down your high street. The minister for roads and transport need to have in place contingency plans for when a truck crashes on the M4.
@daveg21046 ай бұрын
Yes, fuel will be trucked in. At least to begin with. Supposedly they have your accident on the M4 covered, at least as far as fuel supply is concerned. “We’ve ensured WSI’s fuel systems will be capable of storing and delivering sustainable aviation fuels to aircraft from day one of operations” . I don't know what routes they will be using, but I doubt they will be going down too many suburban back streets. Petrol has a lower flash point than jet fuel, meaning it busts into flames more easily. Maybe you should be more worried about all the petrol tankers driving around the suburbs.

@@daveg2104 Fuel tanker combination proposal is A train combinations. Much bigger, that's prime mover and two Full length trailers. Everyday 24/7 on roads that have no tunnels. so connection from Botany will be on regional local roads then onto Motorways. That's a lot of fuel.More than currently shipped to Newcastle or Canberra. past lots of new Housing estates, schools and other densely populated centres not in Eastern Sydney. I expect it takes 6-8 years to plan and build the pipeline that is if you have preserved the corridor for it? NOT Happened! as its a NSWG responsibility, perhaps 2038?

@@kimriley5655 Yeah, they will keep away from tunnels. We don't have disasters with petrol tankers too often (hope I'm not tempting fate there). Although, no matter how responsible the truck drivers are, there are also idiots on the road.
@geoffreystone48496 ай бұрын
@daveg2104 then you have the activitists. They will be he'll bent on stooping the fuel getting to the airport. Too easy in road trains. Pipelines were not built because it cost more. Also snaking fuel pipelines through backyards. Easier to have a fuel unloading point in Newcastle and coming cross country. Then the Greenies and native title owners jumping up and down. Airport should have been built in Newcastle with high speed trains servicing Sydney.
@daveg21046 ай бұрын
@@kimriley5655 I think they should have built the pipeline for the opening of the airport. Reading some of the analysis, it's all about cost benefit. Which is an issue, because it isn't just about what is more profitable for the airport. Although the airport will pass the increased charges onto the airlines, which might make the new airport less attractive and less competetive. I'm not sure if there is a newer analysis, but this is from when a lot of the planning should have been occurring. Deloitte analysis 2017 - Based solely on the economic analysis, jet fuel will need to be delivered by truck to WSA until around 2034, and based on WSA’s passenger forecasting, approximately 41 B-double trucks will be required on a daily basis by 2033. This result is consistent with the WSA EIS modelling.

I really appreciate what you do on your channel, but I do have a fairly major issue with this video. I think that it would have been important to not just how problematic Badgerys Creek airport is. I grew up in the Blue Mountains, and we've known for years that ops in and out of an airport were going to have a very major environmental impact on the local fauna and flora, and that there would be potential noise issues with an airport with no curfew. I'm a huge avgeek, and always in favour of urban development, but this airport isn't a positive thing for Sydney. I'm all in favour of Western Sydney's urbanisation (albeit not in its low density Oran Park-esque form), but the airport is a backwards move that isn't really going to tangibly benefit anyone. One of the biggest arguments for building WSI has been the increased demand on YSSY, and whilst it is true that Kingsford Smith is a busy airport, I think it's reasonable to argue that a proper HSR connection between Brisbane/Sydney/Melbourne would take a significant amount of stress away from YSSY, thus eliminating the need for another airport. Sydney is only going to grow, and unless we look for proper, environmentally viable solutions we're just going to follow in London's footpaths.
@mgp12036 ай бұрын
HSR between Brissy/Syd/Melb will never happen. The cost of such a project will not outweigh the benefits. It's more realistic for something like Wollongong - Sydney - NewCastle.
@chrispekel57096 ай бұрын
What sort of effect? Sounds like NIMBY rubbish. Sydney badly needs this. HSR isn't economically feasible
