The focus uniformity on this one was pretty crazy - best Ive ever seen in a UST - you can see in the focus footage that all 4 squares are in focus - usually I'll have either top or bottom in full focus, or a slightly unfocused image between all 4 squares to make it even. Plus can you tell me if you have a video on the speakers you have. Ty again for all the content.
@BuildMontage5 ай бұрын
That is the single most difficult compromise with this setup - unless you have the speakers behind the screen and then you will need to get a transparent screen. It can be done - I did it upstairs in my setup for a while, I had the speaker underneith and was far back enough that it didn't hamper the experience and still felt realistic.

This has been puzzling me that people think you can't project onto an AT screen... I have been reviewing UST projectors for almost 4 years on many different types of screens. You can clearly see in my video where I'm recording, and it's on an AT screen - and the image is flawless. I think possible the confusion lies with people trying to project onto an acoustic screen if there is ambient light. I would imagine that could be a challenge but my room is 100% light controlled. The footage is clearly visible and you can check out my room tour on my channel - which shows I have Krix MX-10 speakers behind it :)

I see that contrast for AWOL is 3500:1 but for Hisense L9h is 2000000:1. Just wondering why such a big difference and what is the real impact of it?
@BuildMontage5 ай бұрын
The 2000000:1 is a "theoritical" contrast rating using the laser dimming, however, no DLP projector can get anywhere close to that even the Barco and Christie projectors using DLP can only get under 10000:1 contrast for FOFO. The AWOL rating is pretty spot on. my JVC NP5 has 26000:1 and that is super dark. Very difficult with DLP to get high levels of contrast like JVC or Epson.

@mgtowminstrel914311 ай бұрын
@BuildMontage No. Field sequential is an old system in which each frame of video contained left and right images. One eye would be be made from odd lines or field one and the other would be made from the even numbered lines, field 2. Quite often, one would buy a box which decoded the fields and synced a signal to 3D shutter glasses. It was a lousy system. One such box saw off an expensive monitor of mine because it sent a signal with too high a frequency! Some modern projectors still display it. I have had two Viewsonics which did. My Viewsonic X10 does.

How close does the AWOL come to JVC projectors (np5,nx5,nx7) or Sony projectors?
@BuildMontage Жыл бұрын
This seems a popular question - I don't think it's a fair comparison, as it's a UST projector vs a long throw projector. The biggest disadvantage for the AWOL is the DLP light source. JVC DILA is pretty much the best in class for contrast all the way up to the pricepoint of an NZ8/9. It's unfair to compare it in that way. This projector has a lot going for it, the colours are spectacular, plus Dolby Vision, tri-colour - when I'm asked to compare projectors, it's always a general question - and comparisions require parameters and specific things to measure against. Price, brightness, contrast, light source, max lumens, colour of the projector, lens, throw ratio, throw distance, tone mapping, colour gammut - there are so many things to compare against. Yes - I have a JVC NP5 and it's black levels are incredible - but it's a different price point and has less brightness and also doesn't do Dolby Vision. So it all comes down to weighing up what you value most and going with that. Hope this long answer helped :)

I am considering upgrading with this projector. But i was wondering, does the proximity of my 2 SB16 subs near (2 ft) the projector affect the picture?
@BuildMontage Жыл бұрын
I highly doubt it. Unless you’re resting the projector on top of a subwoofer

@@BuildMontage Because I use my LTC 3000 PRO in my home's basement, the 2.4G WiFi is a bit slow, so I switched from the fire stick to Google Chromecast, which has no issues with connecting to 5G WiFi. Additionally, I want to mention that I've been using this LASER TV for two weeks now. I think its biggest advantages are its color and focus, super sharp and crispy but the BLACK LEVEL is rather average. If the main character is wearing black clothes in a night scene, it tends to blend together, making it a bit uncomfortable to watch. (Maybe I'm just being too picky.)Even though I have Dolby Vision turned on, I hope they can improve this in the next software update.

How would you place the centre speaker for this setup? Can you place it above and further back from it? I feel if I would place it beneath the ust the sound would be coming too much away from the image 😅
@BuildMontage4 ай бұрын
This is a common issue with UST projectors, I was using one in my upstairs room for a long time, and I had the speaker just under it and was sitting far enough back from it that it didn't sound like it was coming from underneith due to the dispersion of the speaker.

Nice review, thanks! Sounds like a really good UST projector. Sadly none available yet that has motorized zoom/image-shift with memory presets, so that you can change it to fill top and bottom for 16:9 to cinemascope 21:9 (and other weird formats like 1.85:1 ) on a cinemascope screen, at the touch of a button. So far, only normal throw projectors from Epson, Sony and JVC can do this. Unfortunately this limits options a lot for us that prefer an experience where a movie in 21:9 should be a grander experience than a show in 16:9. Also, due to height restrictions in my basement cinema, I could fit a much bigger/wider screen in 21:9 than 16:9, so that certainly contributed to the screen aspect ratio choice. Well anyway, maybe someday an UST can do it, but doubt it. 🤷♂️🙂
@BuildMontage Жыл бұрын
Yes the optical elements inside a UST projector do limit somewhat the ability to do lens shift and additional screen aspects due to the short throw nature. The lenses have to be aligned precisely. Maybe one day they will work out a way.

@@BuildMontagethey already have Tony. I found it. They have partnered with a company that provides a video box that connects 2 of these together for native anamorphic. So 2 X 16.9 images and the system cuts them perfectly for a 2:35.1 ratio. So money seems to be the only issue here. But if that's similar price to a nz8 what do you think is the better setup IF you wanted a 2:35.1 screen? I want to how the blacks actually compare to a JVC UNIT.

Btw, 24 frame was done ONLY to save money on expensive film. Before that, it was all 30 frame. It has been glorified as the film look for decades without anyone really knowing why it is what it is.
@BuildMontage Жыл бұрын
Yes this was a fortunate happenstance. 24 frames mimicks what the eye sees. When you wave your hands quickly in front of your eyes, the motion blur is very similar. So whatever the case, 24p has been known as the cinematic frame rate and that is why even in digital times films are still made this way.

There's 100 inch tvs for less than 3 grand, once they hit 120 inch anywhere near that price I don't see the benefit to ust
@BuildMontage Жыл бұрын
The disadvantages as far as I can see with screens that large is 1) cost - it will be a long time before a 120" screen becomes affordable & 2) Cinematic look to your movie - a TV just can't reproduce that cinematic look a projector and reflected light gives you no matter how perfect the black levels can be & 3) How do you get your speakers behind a 120" screen if you want a true to life audio experience? Just food for thought - I think we are spoilt for choice and innovations like this pave the way for greater things.

Sooo Put of general curiosity how do the black levels and image compare to likes of sony and jvc traditional projectors? Currently i have a benq in my living room but I am building a mancave building woth light controlled room. Ill be looking for a new PJ in a year or so. The 3 laser system amd mote than 100% bt2020 spunds amazing
@BuildMontage Жыл бұрын
Benq are known for not having the best black levels in the market, but it's hard for me to quantify without measuring. I sometimes measure in my reviews, but this video I didn't want to use my sensor, I wanted to only use the preset modes. Either way, it's quite good and you wouldnt be disappointed if you have a light controlled room.

Nothing against you, I will never trust a review of a projector "sent" by the manufacturer. It is well known that manufacturers send cherry-picked units with massaged firmware and set up beyond what off the shelf units are. Only reviews of off the shelf units bought from a retailer are valid in my mind because of this. You did a good job, this is not a negative on you or your channel.
